"That's right." She returned his smile.

"Think you're going to be lonely?"

"Not if you keep me company."

"I think I can arrange that," he promised.

Jim knew these last weeks had been hard for Stacy. Chet's trial had been a short one and the hanging that had followed had ended the nightmare their lives had become. Now, with Walker back and happily married to Roni, the long-awaited opportunity to propose to Stacy had finally come. Jim was going to ask her to marry him tonight.

As the ranch hands moved away, Jim and Stacy went up to Walker and Roni.

"You've got yourself a good man," Stacy told Roni.

"I know," Roni said as she looked proudly up her husband. "He's my hero."

Much later that night Walker and Roni were enjoying the serenity of beginning their new life together as husband and wife. Roni lay in the haven of his arms, counting her blessings. All the horrible things that had happened to them had only made her love for him stronger.

Roni raised herself up to look down at Walker. "I am so happy. There were times when I feared we would never be together again, and now—"

Walker drew her down for a tender kiss. "And now, we've got our whole future ahead of us—but most especially we've got the rest of tonight without any interruptions—"

A shiver of delight went through Roni at the seductive tone of his voice. "And I don't want to waste a minute of it."

She knew once they'd settled in to married life, there would always be the possibility of their being interrupted by a medical emergency, since she'd decided to keep her practice and travel to town a few times a week to care for her patients.

  But tonight was special.

  This was her wedding night.

The only call she was answering was to love Walker.

They came together in a blaze of passion as the heat of their desire ignited again. With each kiss and caress, they stoked the fire of their need to be one—in body and soul. When they collapsed together, their passion spent, they gloried in the beauty of what they shared.

They loved long into the night, celebrating the beginning of their new life together.

Walker cradled the sleeping Roni in his arms as he watched the eastern sky brighten with the dawn of the new day—his new life. Memories of his vision quest returned. He remembered the promise of love in his future, and he knew that he had found it with Roni.
