Merlin passed word around that the Germans seemed very susceptible to illusions. He suggested to wizards in the field that if they began an attack with an illusory set of troops or tanks, the Germans would react to those, wasting ammunition and leaving themselves open to counterattacks from the real troops. The tactic worked well.

By fall of 1944, the Germans were having problems on all fronts. Their death magic attacks against the beaches had ceased with the liberation of Paris on August twenty-fifth. They were too busy trying to hold onto other parts of France to press the attacks on the British coast.

Merlin was finally finished with teaching classes, although he was kept at the base for work on various other magical projects.

In late October of 1944 Merlin came home to find Nimue sitting on the porch, staring off into space.

  “Nimue, are you alright?”

  She didn't answer.

  “Nimue?”

  There was a long pause.

  “Merlin...”

  Merlin was beginning to worry.

  “What is it?” he asked.

“Merlin, I think I'm pregnant,” Nimue said.
