The boy grabbed a nail gun from the table. His dad didn’t see this either.
But he felt the pain as a nail pierced into his neck. He felt the pain of another in his head.
His dad saw William then, the rage in his eyes, the shadow watching from the doorway…the same one that followed him since he was a child.
And then he heard a piercing crunch. Another.
Darkness consumed him.

When his dad wasn’t moving anymore, William fell to the floor and sat with his mom’s head in his hands. He couldn’t cry anymore. He wanted to, but the tears wouldn’t come.
After several hours, he began to feel numb and that he wanted to write a story. He also felt alone, so alone that he didn’t want the shadow to leave him. If it left him, he would have no one.
What’s your name? he asked in his thoughts.
The shadow didn’t respond at first. He thought it had left, which made him sad despite his numbness. But when it spoke it was a female voice, and he was glad. William hadn’t noticed that it was a woman’s voice before. It reminded him of his mom.
