Chapter 27
The Future
It is our intention to meet Sophia again in the future, the biological mother of our children. It was important for me to keep this avenue open, as I know it will be important for Leo and Olivia in the years ahead. We are lucky and privileged enough to have met two women who would allow that for us and our children. As with Grace, their birth mother, who we will see on our next visit to Thailand, this bond will be their bond, and Krzysztof and I as parents want our children to have this available for them in the future. Parenting the babies for us is nurturing and encouraging them in their own worlds, as well as our worlds. Giving them the opportunity to connect and immerse themselves in their dual heritage has been a priority for me since before their conception. It is my hope that their questions can be answered as they get older and this will allow them to concentrate on their own values and strengths and give them the opportunity to embrace their heritage and the way in which they were welcomed into our lives, as we all became a family.
Having children via surrogacy, with same-sex parents, is different from almost every other family. I have written this book to share our story with those families who have been through a similar journey, or for those thinking about or planning a similar journey themselves. But, most of all, it is for Olivia and Leo, for their future, as a memoir for them.
