Forrest liked how Dave rubbed that tempting little body against him.

When he pulled away, Dave panted, eyes wide. “I’m sorry. I’m usually more reserved than this, but when I’m around you, I don’t know. I feel wilder, braver.”

“That doesn’t sound like a bad thing to me. Come.” Remembering Daryl remained sleeping on the couch, he led Dave to the bedroom and closed the door. The bedroom didn’t contain much, just a bed, a desk, and a door leading to the bathroom.

“I’m still all sweaty,” Dave murmured.

An impatient snarl slipped from his mouth. Was the human regretting his decision now of all times, after making Forrest all hot and heavy? His wolf reeled up inside him, but wolves could be incredibly patient predators, too. He reminded his animal of that.

“Changed your mind?” Forrest asked out of courtesy.

Dave shook his head. “It’s just, will you give me like five minutes to take a quick shower? I’m a little self-conscious.”

  Huh. Forrest smelled no lie.

“Go ahead, it’s right through that door.”

Dave darted to the bathroom, forgetting to leave the door shut. Forrest glimpsed Dave quickly slipping out of his clothes and smiled. So, the human was telling the truth, although in his opinion, Dave had nothing to be self-conscious about. Forrest glimpsed a lean but well-toned body streaked in some places with dirt. Dave slipped inside the shower.

Forrest smiled. Maybe they could shower together.

  Chapter Seven

Dave groaned as hot water hit his head and body. Oh, that felt good. Dave leaned his head against the tiles, his heart still racing. Part of him still couldn’t believe that happened, that he came onto Forrest. How ironic had it been that it was the werewolf who acted like the complete gentleman?

What would Forrest think of him? Then again, if Dave would be back on the road tomorrow, he’d have to face cold reality. Screw the future. Dave refused to think about that. What about that kiss, though? Dave had never been kissed like that before.

He’d been too busy studying and working hard to be a cop that he put his personal life aside. Sure, Dave went on a couple of unsuccessful dates, even had a few quickies with a hook-up app on his phone, but he soon discovered sex was nothing special. Plus, relationships were overrated, nothing like the stories in the gay romance novels he sometimes borrowed from Daryl.

Except when Forrest claimed his mouth—because there was no other word for it—it felt like Forrest transported him to a different place.

“God, what am I doing?” he whispered to himself. Daryl was sleeping right outside, all tuckered out, but he couldn’t sleep, not when his tomorrow seemed so uncertain. Who knew, tonight might be his last on earth.

“Do you have a habit of talking to yourself, little human?” a voice drawled.

He whipped his head around and widened his eyes seeing Forrest leaning against the door casually. God, but Forrest looked good, dressed in nothing but those faded jeans that hung low on his hips. Dave could see the V of flesh disappearing down denim and Forrest’s six-pack abs. His fingers twitched. Dave wanted to touch all that rock-hard muscle and feel Forrest’s large hands on his body.

Dave didn’t need to look down to know he sported an erection.

Thank God, he recovered his voice. “And do you spy on people in the shower?”

Forrest chuckled, the sound of his deep laugh able to melt his bones. Those intense green eyes met his. “I’m not the one who left the shower door open. It’s as good an invitation as any.”

“I did that?” Dave whispered. Oh right. He’d been so eager to clean up fast so Forrest wouldn’t change his mind about sex.

“Seems to me you have some trouble making up your mind, little human. I’ll decide for you,” the werewolf said, then dropped his jeans.

Dave stared, unable to help himself. He’d never seen a cock so huge, and he hadn’t been aware of curling his fingers over his dick and stroking. He imagined Forrest sliding that engorged prick inside his tight little hole, riding him fast and hard so he’d never forget this moment.

His mouth went dry as Forrest opened the shower door and joined him. He took a few steps back so the tiny space could accommodate the two of them. Dave’s back hit the slick shower tiles. Forrest lowered the water pressure so tiny droplets slid down their bodies.

“Why did you stop? Need some assistance?” Forrest asked, putting his huge and callused hand over his prick. He didn’t resist, moaning and practically thrusting his hips into Forrest’s hand as Forrest worked his dick.

Dave began to reach out to touch Forrest’s water-slicked pectorals, but the werewolf easily pinned both his arms above his head, restricting movement. God, feeling helpless turned him on. Forrest’s talented fingers worked his prick faster, and he groaned, eyelids flickering.

“That’s it, little human. I like that expression on your face,” Forrest said, then the bastard stopped, only to fondle his balls. The werewolf nudged his legs further apart, then reached past his balls and began thumbing his puckered entrance. He widened his eyes.

No one had ever teased him like this.

“Tell me, how many men have been inside of you, Dave?”

He gasped when Forrest slid a finger into his hole. “One.”

  Forrest raised an eyebrow.

“Sex is nothing special,” he blurted.

“Well. Let me prove you wrong.” Forrest took his mouth, the kiss all heat and bite.

His dick thickened against his body, his moan spilling out when Forrest released him. The werewolf grabbed him by the shoulder, spun him so his front pressed against the wall. Forrest planted another kiss on the nape of his neck.

  “Wait here. I’ll get lube.”

He rested his cheek against the tiles.

Dave heard a cabinet open then slam shut before the heat of Forrest’s body was right behind him again. Good. Forrest uncapped the lube.

“No piece of plastic between us, little human. We shifters don’t catch anything, and I want to fuck you raw, no barriers.”

Forrest’s words made his heart leap, but he wanted that, too, to feel Forrest’s bare dick riding him.

“I’m clean, too,” he said. “I haven’t been with anyone like this in years.”

  “Except for that uneventful incident?”

He felt himself nod, recalling the one-night stand he had with a stranger. Dave hadn’t had anything in common with that guy. They didn’t even bother giving each other their real names, merely wanted one thing from each other.

Dave soon forgot about that when Forrest slipped a slick finger inside his hole. He rubbed his dick against the tiles, aware his shaft turned from half- to full-mast. Forrest added a second finger, started widening him for access. He gasped when Forrest found that sensitive spot inside him. Needing something to hold onto, he gripped the wall as Forrest did it again.

  “You’re ready,” Forrest said.

  “Thank God,” he muttered.

“Are you always this delightful, little human?” Forrest asked, nipping at the side of his neck.

He shuddered in anticipation, widening his stance only to feel Forrest’s slick cockhead poised at his stretched hole. Forrest gripped his waist and pushed in. He moaned, aware of Forrest’s massive prick stretching him wide.

“Breathe in and out for me,” Forrest ordered.

Dave did as Forrest asked, willing his inner muscles to relax. The rest of Forrest’s entry turned smoother, especially after Forrest moved past the thick ring of muscles. He groaned as Forrest sheathed himself all the way in, finally buried balls deep in him.

“Good job,” Forrest said, grazing his teeth against his pulse.

Pinned in place, he couldn’t form any words, especially when Forrest started to move. The initial burn of Forrest’s entrance disappeared, replaced by pleasurable ecstasy. The werewolf began with slow, steady strokes as if Forrest wanted to make sure he got used to his size. He appreciated that.

  He mewled whe
n Forrest reached for his prick and started stroking it, timing his hand movements with his thrusts.

“Faster,” he managed to grit out.

Then Forrest disabled his ability to think. The werewolf fucked him faster, deeper, seemingly capable of breaching his most intimate places. He gasped at Forrest’s last entry. The werewolf had found his prostate. Dave arched his back as Forrest repeatedly aimed for the spot.

At the same time, Dave felt the sharp ends of Forrest’s fangs on the side of his neck. Any human in their right mind should be afraid, but the thought never crossed his mind. For one, Forrest felt so good, so right inside of him, and Dave felt so connected to the other man in the most intimate and profound way possible.

Dave found himself meeting Forrest for every thrust. He clawed at the wall, only getting further aroused when Forrest tightened his hold on his waist.

“Please,” he found himself uttering, other pleas slipping from his lips.

Forrest bit at his earlobe, breath warmth against his ear. He shuddered, completely under the control of this gorgeous man who fucked Dave like he owned his body. His balls tightened against his body. Any time soon now he’d explode.

“What are you begging me for, little human?”

Oh, Dave was beginning to become fond of that nickname. Hell, it began to sound like a term of endearment, and he never experienced that before. It felt nice, he realized, being wanted, even for a fleeting moment, and tomorrow felt so far away.

Dave didn’t want this moment to end.

“I won’t last,” Dave managed to answer, realizing Forrest asked him a question.

“Go ahead, come for me, little human. I want to hear you scream.”

Forrest fucked him faster now, pulling and tugging at his dick. One pinch to his cockhead did the trick. Dave gasped, the pressure in him bursting open as he came, spraying his load all over the tiles. Forrest hammered in and out of him several times, before filling his ass with warmth.

He felt the werewolf’s mouth on the side of his neck again, and although he didn’t understand fully, he knew the spot could be important to a shifter. Dave had no fear of Forrest ripping out his neck, although a werewolf could do so without hesitation.

Forrest wouldn’t harm him, not after going through the trouble of saving him and Daryl and letting him take refuge for the night here.

Do it, he silently willed. Maybe shifters liked to bite during sex. Well, Dave didn’t mind. He realized that tonight, he might just like a bit of roughness to his pleasure. Forrest had awakened something inside of him, a sexual side he didn’t know existed.

Forrest’s fangs pierced his neck a moment later. He felt a pinprick of pain but only that, because his mind remained floating in the sea of post-orgasmic bliss. As Forrest pulled his teeth away, he sagged only for Forrest to catch him with those strong, steel-banded arms.

“What have I done?” he heard Forrest whisper.

He tried to gather his thoughts. “Do you regret tonight?” he asked, stomach sinking as he processed those words.

“No, never,” Forrest said with a vehemence in his voice, which took him off guard.

Relief replaced fear. Forrest sounded genuine. Good, because Dave just had the best sex of his life.

“Is it the bite then?” he asked, sounding sleepy to his ears.

Forrest started stroking him, which felt so good. “Go to sleep, little human. We’ll talk about this tomorrow.”

“By tomorrow, I’ll be gone, and so will you. You’ll leave me.” Dave wasn’t sure he said those words in his mind or out loud. God. He sounded desperate and needy, didn’t he? Forrest only hugged him tighter.

“Wrong, little human. From now on, I’m never leaving your side. You’re my mate, and I’m not letting you go.”

Well, those words sounded reassuring. Dave must have probably been dreaming but it didn’t matter. If this was indeed all happening in his head, then he never wanted to wake up.

  Chapter Eight

Desmond Wang peered at the road ahead of him. Uneasy, he looked left and right. Tall trees bordered either side of the road, and for some reason, despite it being the early hours of the morning, looking at those old trees unsettled him for some inexplicable reason. He was a city dweller, born and raised. Only animals and non-humans chose to live in the wilderness. It didn’t help his nerves that Tag, his driver, looked uncertain, as well.

For fuck’s sake, they both of them were members of the Discipline Squad, feared and respected by most of New City’s citizens. New City was their playground, except they were no longer in the familiar concrete and glass jungle Desmond knew every inch of. He told himself to calm down, take deep breaths.

Desmond was vice-captain here. He shouldn’t show any ounce of fear to his junior officers, but it didn’t help his nerves that he kept remembering Voss’s warning. Another failure would lead to Desmond losing his position. He couldn’t let that happen, especially after all the sweat and blood he poured into rising above the ranks. His pride and reputation were at stake here.

Tag stopped the car, and he frowned.

  “What now?” he demanded.

“This is the last signal we got from Cash’s team,” Tag said, swallowing.

“What are you looking at?” Jesus. Tag reminded him of a dumb animal, until he followed Tag’s gaze. Two billboards on either side of them had the same warning. A chill crawled down his spine.

“You’re telling me that the Rush brothers would have the guts to petition the Devil Hills Wolves for refuge?” he demanded.

Only a fool didn’t know about the animals who controlled this large portion of land. It wasn’t just werewolves who decided to place their stake on this land, but rumor had it, the Devil Hills community also housed other dangerous paranormals. The Humans Matter government had lost far too many men and resources trying to reclaim these lands from the monsters, so they considered it a lost cause.

“Vice-Captain?” Tag began. “Should we drive back?”

“Are you kidding me? After driving all the way here? Our asses are on the line,” Desmond hissed.

“Pardon me for saying this, Vice-Captain, but it’s only yours.”

He punched Tag in the nose for that. The big man groaned, covering his nose.

“Get out of the car. You too, Rhett,” he told the silent scout.

The three of them emerged as he surveyed the empty road ahead of and behind them. No wonder no other cars passed by this road.

“They were here,” said the dead voice of the scout.

Rhett wore the white uniform just like the rest of them, making him unidentifiable, unremarkable, save for those blank eyes. The thirty-four-year-old scout’s mind had been wiped clean when he’d been rehabilitated.

It still creeped Desmond out having a scout tag along during missions, but they had no choice. He kept thinking these so-called useful Espers would someday break conditioning and end up killing them.

Those incidents were rare, though, a tiny percentage of scouts turned violent but were put down before anything bad happened. The Squad disliked negative media attention, after all, especially if the public decided what they did to these Espers would be considered inhuman by equalist activists.

For all the trouble Daryl Rush caused him, though, maybe Desmond would relish seeing the Esper broken down. Maybe he could even suggest using the human brother to force the younger one to submit. In his eyes, Dave Rush had betrayed humanity by siding with his non-human sibling.

“Anything useful?” he asked Rhett, sounding sarcastic. He walked toward the two warning signs. Tag reluctantly followed. The fool had taken out his gun, but Desmond saw his hands shook. Did the monsters really take out the retrieval team he sent?

That pissed him off. If that kind of thing happened in New City, he’d immediately have back up and the authorization to hunt these non-humans down. Not here, though.

  A bird screeched somewhere nearby.

The hairs on his arms rose as he scanned the trees. He saw n
othing. Something was off about these woods, he realized, spotting a hawk on the nearest tree branch, watching them intently. God, he must be losing his mind. Another one landed on the next tree.

Those birds were enormous. What were the monsters feeding their wildlife?

Desmond was losing his mind. He hated to give Voss more bad news.

“Someone cleaned up this sight, but I can still faintly feel the presence of our Esper target,” Rhett said.

“We step into their lands and we’re dead,” Tag said. “That’s what I heard. We’re safe at this line, but if we go any closer, we’re meat to them.”

They stood maybe an inch to the warning signs now.

Desmond thought about the pricey apartment he just bought back at home, his wife’s growing list of credit card debts, and the new luxury car he bought for her and him. His salary bump had been significant during his promotion. How was he going to pay for all that if Voss demoted him back to senior Squad member?

“Let’s do a little experiment,” Desmond said.

Without warning, he shoved Tag forward. The big man let out a little cry, before stumbling on the road. He let out a little giggle. Tag looked ridiculous. For a second, nothing happened. Relief filled him. So, the rumors were untrue after all.

“Desmond, you prick—” Tag yelled, only for a fast, white blur to speed out of the nearest trees. One moment Tag had been cursing him, the next, blood spurted from the chuck of missing flesh on his neck. It happened too quickly for him to process.

Desmond nearly unloaded his bladder as he came face-to-face with a monstrous white wolf with eerie silver eyes. The animal dropped the corpse, bared incredibly sharp teeth at him.

“There are more coming,” said Rhett in his toneless voice.
