Sarah Dee Was Here

Page 15

by Steve Galloway

Laden down with shopping, laden down with life; Lizzie Dee made her way up the wet concrete stairs towards her flat. She turned her key in the thin glass door and dragged her assortment of bags over the threshold. Then she saw something that made her heart flutter with excitement:

Lying on the doormat was another letter.

She opened the anonymous brown envelope and looked at the postcard inside: it was a simple postcard with a picture of a red cat on a white background on the reverse side. It could have come from anywhere in the world. Lizzie took it into her bedroom and opened her dressing table drawer: she took out the other postcard; the one she had received a few weeks ago.

The other postcard had a picture on the reverse which showed a small fishing harbour and beyond it a town of quaint-looking houses. Across the middle of the scene was written: Greetings from Greenwater, Nova Scotia.

Lizzie turned the postcard over and read the message which was written in a familiar, looping hand:

  Dear Grandma

I figured it might be a safe time to write to you again and tell you how I’m doing. I’m staying in Greenwater, Nova Scotia at the moment. It’s a lovely town. I’ve always wanted to visit Canada. I was hoping I might get to see the Northern Lights while I’m here, but I haven’t been that lucky yet. I don’t live up here, of course. I live a long way away. I can’t tell you where my home is, I’m afraid. Maybe I will be able to one day, but for now I have to stay safely hidden. I’m very happy there, though, and I hope you are too.

  All my love

Lizzie felt a lump rising in her throat. She tucked the postcard back into the plain envelope it had arrived in, and started to place the latest postcard in with it.

Before she did, she turned the red cat picture over and read the message again. It was a much shorter message than the one on the last postcard. It simply read:

  Justice has been done.
