A Sleuth Is Born

“No need to apologize. I’m glad to have played a role, even an unwitting one, in bringing those crooks down. Besides, Foxy’s flirting was over the top, but it was still fun—even though it was fake.”
Drew paused and tentatively picked up Angela’s hand. “It wasn’t all fake. I wasn’t lying when I said you were an amazing woman, Angela.”
Angela felt another warm blush appearing on her cheeks. But this time, it was nice. Unlike the overwhelming steam that Foxy’s charm offensive generated, Drew’s sincere sweetness didn’t make her feel uncomfortable. On the contrary, it made her feel happy and relaxed.
“I’ll be heading out of town for a few weeks, working on another case in Reno,” Drew said. “Then I’ll be back home to San Francisco for a while. When I do… I was wondering if you might like to go out sometime. Your conference will be behind you by then—we’ll both be ready for a little fun, I’d imagine.”
“I think I’d like that,” Angela said, after a pause that felt just a little too long.
“Oh good,” said Drew. “The way you hesitated, I thought maybe you’d gotten together with Aseem. I just… I had the impression there might be history there.”
“We do have a history—a long history of being dear friends. Neither one of us plans to change that.” Though she thought it, she stopped herself from adding, “at least not at the moment.” Because the truth was, she’d come to believe Aseem was right. They were too good together at work to risk screwing it all up.
“Good,” said Drew, gently kissing the back of Angela’s hand. Then he raised his coffee cup for a toast. “To new beginnings.”
“To new beginnings,” Angela replied, clinking her coffee cup lightly against his.
