  BIBLIOGRAPHY/RECOMMENDED READING

The definitive book on rap music and hip-hop culture is Steven Hager’s Hip Hop: The Illustrated History of Break Dancing, Rap Music, and Graffiti, which provides a rich context for all its elements. An excellent book.

The most thorough and compelling consideration of Death Row Records in particular and gangsta rap in general is Ronin Ro’s Have Gun Will Travel. What it lacks in narrative coherence, it makes up for in exhaustive research and vivid detail.

The only really significant examination of gang culture in South Central Los Angeles is Leon Bing’s Do or Die, an earnest and courageous (if at times uncritical) engagement of both Bloods and Crips.

The best book about gangbangers (written by one of them) is Monster by Shanyika Shakur, a.k.a. Monster Kody Scott..

The Los Angeles Police Department h
as been the subject of numerous tomes. None of them are really excellent, but Steve Herbert’s Policing Space is worth reading.

The deaths of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls have been the subject of two books by Las Vegas Sun reporter Cathy Scott: The Killing of Tupac Shakur and The Murder of Biggie Smalls. Both were finished fast and dirty.

Tupac Shakur’s bodyguard Frank Alexander published a book called Got Your Back (written with Heidi Siegmund Cuda). If you’re interested in an encyclopedic chronicle of Tupac’s sexual conquests, this is the book for you.
