The cabin grew smaller and smaller by the moment. Savi felt like a caged animal.

The crack of the log splitting in the fireplace startled her. The dying embers glowed red on top gray, flakey ash. Without a fire, the room grew too cold for sleep. The cold didn’t bother Lincoln. He slept like the dead. His snoring reminded her of Grandmother’s tea kettle.

A single tear slid down her face. Her grandmother was far away. Mora thought Savi was dead. It broke her heart when she pictured her grandmother mourning her only granddaughter. Since Savi’s mom died twelve years prior, Mora took care of Savi. Now she was alone. Alone and grieving. .

She tossed back the blankets and sat on the end of the couch. Lincoln had no covers. His wolf-blood longed for the cold. Her muscles tensed while standing in the cold. Her blood needed warm.

Spotting a few logs left in the carrier, she added a couple to the fire. If she focused enough, her power would block the anxiety. She closed her eyes, slowed her breathing, and drew on her chi. The warmth started in her feet, worked its way up her back, and into her mind. She knelt closer and blew the collected energy across the logs. At first only a small pillar of smoke rose from the back. Savi concentrated and blew again. One flame danced on a log, then another. Within seconds, the new logs burned and the warmth from the renewed fire warmed the room.

A lone wolf’s howl distracted her. Lincoln’s pack served as sentries around the cabin since they arrived. They never wandered in sight, but she felt their energies and Lincoln assured her they were there. This was her first exposure to wolf shifters and curiosity drove her crazy. Lincoln had only shifted once since they arrived, but she was not around.

The clouds parted and the full moon illuminated the cabin, making it easier to see. Lincoln looked peaceful as he slept. There was no trace of the fierce fighter who attacked the shooter last night. The man sleeping on the recliner looked like a kindergarten teacher. His peaceful face showed a confident man, not afraid of the future. She envied that.

His phone vibrated on the coffee table. If she could get it and slip outside without waking him, she could call Mora. Her grandmother deserved to know she was safe and alive.

Savi, calmed her heartbeat and crept to the phone. Her eyes never left his face as she reached down and picked it up. She continued toward the door, turned the doorknob, and opened it wide enough for her to sneak outside.

  “Put it back,” Lincoln said.

The crisp, night air stung her face. She could run and maybe hide long enough to make the call Her chances weren’t that good.

“If you step out onto that porch, three wolves will form an attack circle before you make it off the last step. They will force you back inside by any means necessary.”

She spun around and glared at him. “You don’t get it. I don’t have a whole pack who loves me. I have one woman who gave up everything , just one.” She held up an index finger for emphasis. “Mora deserves to know I’m safe.”

In two long strides, Lincoln stood behind her and closed the door. He held out his hand.

Defeated, she returned the phone. “I hate you.”

He bent his head close enough that she felt his hot breath on her neck. “I know.”

His earthy musk reminded her of the desert at night. His chest and broad shoulders tempted her to forget the hate and anger. It would be easy to lose herself with this man. But she could not allow that distraction.

“Go sit on the couch.” He stepped aside, letting her pass. “I see you revived the fire. Were you cold?”

Savi nodded and sat on the couch.

Lincoln brought over another blanket and wrapped it around her then brought her close. “I cannot imagine what this must feel like for you. But you need to trust me and my team. We have done this for years and haven’t lost anyone.”

She laid her head on his shoulder. She might not be killed, but she was already lost. This strange man was responsible for more than her safety. He was also responsible for the heaviness in her heart and the heat in her pants.
