The Broken Souls Page 25

by Rivka Spicer

All this went through Jen’s head as she approached Mark and when she got there she kissed her dad’s cheek and then took Mark’s hand, ready to promise the rest of her life to him.

Mara did them all proud with a beautiful ceremony, even more special than the first one they had attended at the Manse what seemed like a lifetime ago. She had given them the same solemn speech about how love was not enough to ensure a healthy marriage and it was made all the more poignant by their story to those that knew it. Love alone had not been enough for Jen to make her decision but in the end it still won out over duty.

After the ceremony they had a few moments together alone in the car while they travelled to the venue and Jen examined the brightly ribboned knot that tied their hands together symbolically. It was supposed to remain in place until they got to the party and everyone could add their wishes to it with small coloured ribbons but it had certainly made getting in the car funny.

“Was this everything you dreamed of?” Mark asked softly and Jen blinked away tears. Strangely in her tear-blurred vision Mark’s face seemed to shift between his and Ankhmet’s and Hedin’s and Julius’ and the realisation that she had finally married all of these men and laid them to rest after centuries of anguish filled her heart with light. It had started with a dream and so it would end with a dream.

“Yes.” She replied simply. “It is.”
