“It looks like we’re headed for more water!” Travis yelled.
“What?” Sam said. “Water, where?”
Travis pointed to the mirror. “There, don’t you see it? Through the mirror!”
But Sam didn’t see water, he saw a forest. “No, I see trees, and lots of them.”
“What?” Travis said, putting his hand to his ear. The humming was so loud now Sam could barely hear himself speak.
Sam turned to Travis and yelled, “I. See. Trees!”
“Trees? I don’t see any trees! Travis replied.
Maybe that’s how it worked—maybe they saw what they wanted to see, Sam thought. Surely if something could go wrong Demetrius would have warned them about it. Travis saw more water and Sam saw a forest like he had seen … in his dream.
He felt a terrifying wave of realization sweep over him. He looked back to the mirror and gasped.
“Sarah.”
The memory of the dream came rushing back. He could see the forest, the moonlight, the beast chasing him, and Sarah calling his name. He had not put the two together before, but now it was all too clear. That was the same forest. He looked at Travis, unsure of what to say or how to explain it.
Travis looked at Sam, his eyes trying to meet Sam’s as he placed his hand on his shoulder.
“Buddy, you okay?” he yelled. He gave him a gentle shake. “You don’t look good.”
Sam broke from his reverie, pursed his lips, and nodded that he was fine. He wasn’t sure what it was that he was seeing but he knew one thing—he wasn’t going to find the answers on this side of the mirror. It was time to go.
“Ok, your turn. I’ll take up the rear,” Sam said as loudly as he could.
“No, Sam you go!” Travis replied. “I got this!”
“I’ll be fine. I’ll be right behind you,” Sam said, patting him on the back.
The boys looked at one another as the sound of the humming of the mirror flooded their senses. Travis gave Sam one final grin and a thumbs-up before turning and walking, head down, into the mirror. With a small ripple, Travis was gone and Sam was left standing all alone. He edged closer to the mirror and apprehensively placed a single finger into the rippling forest. To his surprise, it was cool to the touch and not wet like he had expected. The ripples moved from around his finger out in small circles that expanded to the edges of the frame. Sam pulled his finger back and stared into the moonlit forest.
“I can do this,” he said to himself. He swallowed hard and hitched up his backpack. Then he lowered his head and stepped forward into the world called Haven.
About the Author
D.C. Akers was born in Texas and attended Crowley High School. After spending several years working in accounting, Akers began to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a writer.
Like many who enjoy the fantasy genre, Akers started reading it as an adolescent. He was fascinated with Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He currently enjoys reading works by Dean Koontz, Heather Brewer, J.K. Rowling, and Rick Riordan.
