News Articles About Annie’s Around-the-World Ride

Note: Gathering this collection of contemporaneous newspaper and journal accounts of Annie’s journey required reliance on many different people and methods. In some cases, I was assisted by librarians in distant cities or hired local researchers. Copies were not always entirely legible, depending on the quality of the microfilm or the microfilm reader and printer, and page numbers were not always noted. Many articles from the French press, and a few from U.S. newspapers, were in a scrapbook Annie kept and, in most cases, she did not note the name of the newspaper, the date, the page number, or even the city of publication, though that was often discernible from the text itself. In a few cases, I was able to locate other copies of these stories and to source them completely. An asterisk indicates articles in Annie’s scrapbook that could not be further identified. In writing this book I also relied on countless newspaper articles that had nothing to do with Annie directly. For example, old newspapers provided valuable information about local weather, about cycling in the 1890s, and about international events that were relevant to Annie’s journey, primarily the Sino-Japanese War of 1895. The articles listed here are only those that relate specifically to Annie. Where other articles are specifically quoted or referenced in the text, they appear in the endnotes.
