She laughed. “Viktal shook his head and said, “Man comes. Viktal need Kaitlyn.” And he turned around and disappeared.”
“Shit.” Lauren stared off into the distance.
Daxter sighed. “A few miles out, I caught the track of a Yesla. I think this great beast is your ox.”
Kayla nodded and turned to Lauren. “There are a few things you need to know. Then I think you and Daxter should go find that zoo. Take some of the girls with you if you need to. Falcon and I will handle the rest and we’ll search for Kaitlyn.”
Lauren was leery of the suggestion. “What do I need to know?”
“We can never go home,” Kayla said carefully.
“Oh.” She looked at Dax and smiled. “I already figured I wouldn’t go home unless it was for a visit. Daxter would have to hide too much. What about the other girls with us?” she asked. “Nancy, Randi and Rachael, Ashton, Tawnya, and Donna.”
Makayla looked at her mate. “Falcon?”
“They aren’t related to a Guardian, but they know too much about space. There might be a way to wipe their memories and let them go. I’ll check.”
Makayla finished it. “We can’t go home, but the Helpers have packed all our belongings. All the things in the house and the shed, even the animals in the barn will be cared for until we move them or choose to let them go.”
Lauren sat up quickly. “My horse?”
“Lightning is there,” her cousin promised.
“Can I bring him here?” she danced a little in her seat, waiting for the answer.
Falcon nodded and clapped Daxter on the back. “There are ways.”
LATER, MAKAYLA AND Lauren were drinking coffee and discussing how to handle things.
“We can’t go back to the ranch, but we could live on earth. Or another planet, or in the spaceship,” Lauren clarified.
Her cousin nodded.
“And no matter where we go, we can get stuff. Like hamburger and our guns, and beer.”
Kayla looked at her. “You hate beer.”
She grinned. “I know. But I was seeing if you were paying attention.”
“I’m paying attention. I am worried about Kaitlyn, worried about you, and so hungry I am going to pass out if I don’t get some real food.”
“So, tell me what’s in the room on the ship,” Lauren demanded.
Kayla laughed. “Clothes, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and brushes, makeup, and hygiene products. I even packed toilet paper because I had no idea what we’d need in space. I have enough food, guns, and ammunition for a small army. Lots of pictures, art supplies for the three of us. I put Kaitlyn’s throwing knives in her cache but your arm and leg guards for karate are at the ship. And your favorite books and cuddle blankets.”
“That is so awesome. Falcon and I can go get some of it tomorrow if you want to stay and wait for Kaitlyn,” Lauren offered.
Makayla looked out over the red planet and sighed. “Yes. You go get some stuff. Falcon can take you and bring our spaceship back here so I can have something decent to eat and a shower. Then you and Dax can go take care of the zoo before someone else gets to it, or they all die of starvation because no one is feeding them.” She looked at Lauren. “Do you think it’s a real zoo. Like a park with cages and people in it?”
Lauren sighed. “To tell you the truth. I’m afraid to find out.”
She hugged her cousin and turned to go with Dax back to their cave for the night. No matter how worried she was about Kaitlyn, life had to go on. And Makayla was here. She’d find Kit Kat. Daxter hugged her and they started walking.
Falcon walked over to Makayla and hugged her. The intergalactic guardian had said very little today. Tears filled Lauren’s eyes when he offered the perfect final words for the night.
Falcon whispered, “As long as Kaitlyn is out there, this cave will be our home. When Kaitlyn gets away, just like Lauren did, she’ll know where to find us.”
Epilogue
KAITLYN WAITED LONG enough behind the hidden opening of the cave for Lauren and her dragon-man to leave. She smirked when Lauren’s alien took her to bed—in a cave far enough away that they wouldn’t hear her scream.
Now they just needed Makayla to show up. Well, they needed her sister and a spaceship that would take them home.
Her shoulders drooped and she sat back on the rock for a minute. Maybe. If Lauren didn’t go home, Kaitlyn wasn’t sure she could either. She took her last sip of cold coffee and mourned all the things she’d never see again, or get to do, or eat.
Tex-Mex nachos. Graduate from college. Ride her horse. Oh, god. What would happen to Hercules?
She sighed and looked up at the stars. There were so many. She felt small and insignificant. It was nice to sit out here for a moment by herself. She was never alone anymore.
Before she started crying, she stood up and dusted off her jeans. All the questions and angst could wait for another day. She was tired. And when Makayla got here, she and Lauren would help Kaitlyn figure it all out.
Before she turned, a large, dark-haired man stepped out of the night and stood just feet from her.
Kaitlyn’s jaw dropped and she squeaked. Immediately she knew who this was. This was the man who’d left her dead aliens as a gift. And flowers. She couldn’t forget the flowers.
She couldn’t close her mouth either. She was in shock. Her mind was blown.
He was a massive giant. There was no weapon in his hands, but then he didn’t need one. Hand-to-hand combat with this man would be a joke. He would just need to wrap those thick arms around her, and she wouldn’t be able to move.
And those legs. His legs were the size of redwood tree trunks.
Her gaze slowly climbed his body and she shuddered. Now she felt like she was drooling. His chest was a thing of beauty and his neck was corded and strong. He had amazing dark curly hair that fell past his shoulders. And oh, Momma! Brilliant blue eyes that she got lost in for long moments.
He hadn’t said anything, so she let her gaze drift to uncovered muscle-bound arms that were all tatted up with incredible scrollwork.
He was a handsome giant.
He was barely dressed in fur and a short loincloth. Very barbarian. She jumped when he beat his closed fist on his chest and said, “Viktal.” Then pointed at her and said, “Kaitlyn.” Although it sounded more like Catlin.
The next words out of his mouth shocked her. “Catlin mate.”
Once again, her mouth dropped open in shock. What the hell?
Before she could scream for help or run, he took two gigantic steps and had her in his arms. His mouth on hers. Kissing her.
Kissing... Oh!
Oh, my God, the man could kiss. She was so happy he was kissing her. When he put those massive hands on her ass and lifted, it was easy to wrap her legs around his waist. Easier to kiss him. And keep kissing him.
He started walking and the motion rubbed him right at her core and she melted. She never noticed that he was walking away from the cave. Taking her from everything she knew and loved.
They melted into the night.
When he stopped kissing her to climb on the ox with her in his arms, she lifted her head and looked around. Dazed.
“No. I can’t...”
He silenced her by finding her mouth with his again. Kissing her until she lost her mind. She was in so much trouble. She should never have made fun of Lauren.
In a few minutes, she’d stop kissing her barbarian giant and demand to be taken back. Surely, he’d listen to her.
In the back of her mind, she remembered the Siloth doctor gloating over his fated mate serum. He wanted them to be happy... Saying something like, “It will change your biology and make you attractive to only one or two men in the universe. Others will turn away and leave you alone. But your fated mate will be compelled to have you. And you will be driven to mate with him.”
She’d stop kissing this man in a minute.
Damn. She’d been abducted by aliens not once, but twice.
But she would...soon. When he finished kissing her.
