  And I understand what she’s going through. It’s hard to be so vulnerable and exposed when you don’t have any way to protect yourself. If she acknowledges that her father is more than a monster than she has to face the grief of losing him. It’s easier to pretend that she doesn’t care.

  But I know she does care. She cares too damn much. So if she can’t face herself then I can at least make her face me.

  Sophia stares up at me as my fingers go to work. Her eyes are wide and unseeing as she crests over the edge and screams her orgasm directly into my ear.

  I release her arms and roll her limp body over so she lies on top of me. Her heart rests directly against mine and it feels like they pound with the same beat.

  Each breath she takes presses her chest a little closer against mine. I trace the line of her jaw with the back of my hand and her sigh tickles along my skin. “My father is dead. I’m never going to find out what he did, what he was really guilty of.”

  “I’m going to find all the answers for you that I can. Accepting the truth is up to you.”

  The only truth that matters to me is her.

  “Will I ever be okay again?”

  I wrap my arms around her and squeeze out. I have this desperate urge to protect her from the world even though I know it’s not possible. But I don’t have the answer to that question.

  Her breathing slows and I hear her soft whisper just before she drifts off to sleep. “Don’t let me go okay.”

  “Never.”

  And I don’t just mean now. That promise is forever.
