ABOUT THE AUTHOR
BRIAN McGINTY is an attorney and writer who specializes in American history and law. Born and raised in Southern California, he attended the University of California in Berkeley, where he earned his BA in American history and his JD from Boalt Hall, the school of law at the same university. He practiced law in Monterey County for ten years before beginning a writing career in which he produced ten books and more than 150 articles in popular magazines and scholarly journals. His awards include the Best Writing Prize from the National Historical Society, the Editor’s Award for Historic Scholarship from the Sonoma County (California) Historical Society, a nomination for the One Book Arizona prize for 2008, and Honorable Mention in the 2010 Scribes Book Award of the American Society of Legal Writers. For a dozen years he was a writer and editor at a large national legal publisher. His most recent books include Strong Wine: The Life and Legend of Agoston Haraszthy (Stanford University Press, 1998), The Oatman Massacre: A Tale of Desert Captivity and Survival (University of Oklahoma Press, 2005), Lincoln and the Court (Harvard University Press, 2008), John Brown’s Trial (Harvard University Press, 2009), The Body of John Merryman: Abraham Lincoln and the Suspension of Habeas Corpus (Harvard University Press, 2011), and A Toast to Eclipse: Arpad Haraszthy and the Sparkling Wine of Old San Francisco (University of Oklahoma Press, 2012).
