"Honey?"
His voice was falsely chipper as though he was mimicking an old TV show.
"Honey, I'm home!"
The lock stuck and I began to panic, rattling the key wildly in an attempt to force the door open.
"Paige, sweetheart? I know you're home. Your car is in the drive, remember?"
"Shit, shit, shit."
His footsteps clicked along the hallway. Any second now he would see me with my suitcase ready to flee.
"Paige?"
Please... if there's a God...
The lock snapped open and the door glided to reveal a rush of cold air. As I saw Arthur's foot step into the kitchen, I ran, hurtling myself up the side of the house, crashing into the trash cans before arriving at my car.
Launching myself into the driver's seat, I kicked the pedal and flung the car into reverse. Arthur appeared in the open front door, his face a picture of shock and anger and his mouth moved, but I didn't hear a sound.
Pedal to the metal, I accelerated out onto the main road, my eyes darting up to the rearview mirror to make sure he wasn't following me.
~
"This is madness, fucking madness."
Both Sean and I had are things crammed into the trunk. My hands were shaking but I couldn’t pinpoint why. There were too many thoughts flying through my head, so many things that were changing so fast. I sat on them in an attempt to calm down and took a deep breath, my eye on Sean who seemed to be taking control of things as though he did this every day of his life.
"Where are we heading?"
"South," Sean replied with his eyes on the road and his hands clutching the steering wheel.
He pointed into the distance as though he was envisaging a point in mind.
"South... that's a bit vague."
"You know where I mean. Back to..." his words drifted off.
"You're taking us back home, aren't you?"
He didn't reply but he didn’t need to. It was the only logical place.
"What will we do when we get there?" I asked, knowing what he was going to say. My hands were sweaty at the thought, my mouth becoming dry.
"We come clean," he said. "I already phoned dad.”
I sat back in my seat and watched the cars as they passed by the window. Finally, we were going to have to tell them everything.
"It'll work out," he said and reached over for my hand.
Kissing it, he gave my fingers a squeeze and smiled.
"Somehow I feel as though you're more comfortable with this than I am."
His eyes shifted back to the road. Up ahead, the traffic was starting to slow down and he sighed, feeling as though our escape attempt was being thwarted.
"We're being idiots," I said. "We're running away like teenagers and you're leaving your entire career behind. What about your patients?"
He scratched his chin and frowned.
"There are other doctors there who'd be happy to take the extra cash."
"You've thought about this already, haven't you?"
"Maybe..."
In the distance, the traffic was reaching a standstill and soon, we weren't able to move any further. Instinctively, I looked up to the rearview mirror at the cars behind us.
"Don't worry. There's no white BMW," Sean said, sensing my thoughts. "I've been keeping an eye out for him."
I smiled and leaned against his shoulder.
"This is crazy," I said. "Just totally mad."
"Madness is my business," he said with a wry smile.
"Yeah but you're supposed to be curing it!" I laughed and gave him a playful punch in the chest.
He leaned down and kissed my cheek.
"Looks like we'll be stuck here a while," he huffed. "You think there's an accident up ahead?"
Opening the window, I stuck my head out and craned my neck to see further up the road. A blue light was blinking on the horizon.
"Shit... Who knows how long we'll be here."
"I hope no one's hurt," Sean said.
Straining my eyes to see better, I caught the hint of a gurney.
"I think everyone's fine," I said.
Moving back inside, I looked back to the rearview mirror. There was no way of shaking the feeling that Arthur was behind us, waiting to do something at the right moment.
"You never told me what he said, when he came to your office," I nudged Sean out of his daydream.
His hands clamped around the steering wheel again, his knuckles turning white.
"He said a lot of things. Stuff that was just, I dunno, worrying."
"How worrying?"
He hesitated for a moment.
"Ah, nothing. Don't think about it."
"But it must have been bad if you told me to leave." I said.
His knuckles turned whiter.
"Just believe me when I say the best thing for you is to be as far away from him as possible."
Something told me I didn't want to hear what he said.
To my left, a car pulled up with an old couple bickering. I could see the wife struggling with an outstretched map, her husband cradling his forehead in his hand.
"Hey, you think all couples end up that unhappy?" I asked as I pointed out the window.
Sean smiled.
"Only the best ones. Probably been together decades."
"They're rather sweet, aren't they?"
Sean grinned and squeezed my thigh.
"Nothing's as sweet as you."
~
An hour had passed since the traffic stopped moving and we were still sat stationary in the center of the jammed up highway. The old couple next to us had climbed out to stretch their legs and were now sitting on the nearby embankment with a lunchbox full of sandwiches.
Meanwhile, I lay on Sean's his chest, the beat of his heart lulling me to sleep. I blinked to try and wake up and rubbed my eyes.
"It's kind of nice, being trapped in here, isn't it?"
"I'd rather we were far away from this city," he replied.
"I don’t know, it's kinda sexy, isn't it? A little romantic?"
He pulled me closer.
"What are you thinking?"
Tracing a finger up the length of his thigh, I kissed his neck.
"No one will see..."
He glanced from left to right.
"Are you sure?"
I nodded, running my hand down the steamed up window.
"We're on the run, just the two of us, stuck in here..."
Pulling his mouth to mine, I tasted the sweetness of his lips. Again, he darted his eyes from side to side to make sure no one could see before sliding my skirt up my thighs.
"Are you wet?" he whispered in my ear but he knew I was.
He touched a tentative fingertip to my panties and felt the moistness.
"Mmmm...."
He kissed my neck, his tongue gliding over my skin. My hand found its way between his legs and his hardness pushed up into my palm. I kissed him softly, feeling him grow harder.
In a hurry, he unzipped his pants and pulled himself free, stroking himself as he pulled me toward him. Straddling him, I cuddled him close, wanting to feel the warmth of his body against mine.
"Put your arms around me," I breathed. "Don't let me go."
He held me tight as he entered me, groaning as he slid in deep. We were frantic, desperate to make love. I rocked back and forth on him, feeling myself grow hotter as I moaned.
"Shhh..."
He tried to calm me, pressing a finger to my lips.
"People will hear you."
But I couldn't stop the wave of pleasure that was flowing through me and my moans became screams. I rode him hard, reaching a frenzy as I so desperately want to consume him. Just fucking him wasn't enough. I wanted to breathe him, feel him inside me as he became part of me. I wanted us to be inseparable forever, needed to know that he would always be with me.
"Harder!" I cried.
He gripped my hips and drove himself up into me, clenching his jaw tight as a tidal w
ave of ecstasy spread over his body. His abs pulled themselves taught and his thighs clamped tight.
"Fuck!"
I reached down and bit him as I came, the sour tang of iron stinging my tongue as I broke the skin. He grunted in pain and gritted his teeth together as he ejaculated. Then reached for my throat and wrapped his fingers around it to pull me away.
As he pushed me against the door I could see the damage I'd inflicted. A crimson stream of blood was trickling down the space between his pecs.
"I'm sorry," I gasped as I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand.
"Don't be," he smiled. "It's kinda hot."
Dabbing his finger into the blood, he held it to my lips and I darted out my tongue to taste the viscous liquid.
"I never had you down as being a vampire?" he joked.
"There's a first time for everything."
Behind us, a car honked its horn. Ignoring it for the moment, we looked into each other's eyes and kissed as we lingered in the blissful aftermath.
"I could lie in your arms forever," I breathed. "It's my favorite place in the world."
He kissed the top of my head and brushed the hair from my neck.
"I love you, Paige. You know that, don't you?"
"I love you too. I always have."
The car honked its horn again, this time louder. It was then that I realized the traffic had begun to move. Sean laughed and stepped on the accelerator with his pants still pulled down around his thighs.
"Bad timing," he smirked.
And I shuffled over to the passenger side where my phone lay on the floor.
"Shit, I have eighteen missed calls!"
Sean glanced over.
"Let me guess. Arthur."
"Obviously."
The pleasure of a few moments ago now seemed to feel as though it belonged in another lifetime. I was panicking, terrified of what Arthur must be thinking or doing.
"He'll know we're together," I said. "But you don't really think he'll do something, do you?"
Sean bit his lower lip as he thought.
"Paige, I didn't want to scare you but I think that bastard's one of the most unstable people I've ever had in my office. I think he's capable of a lot more than you might think."
My legs began to tremble and I pressed them together to steady myself.
"But he wouldn't... he wouldn't try and find us. Chances are he's just at home confused and angry as to why I fled the house."
Sean didn't look convinced. I rubbed his back and tried to comfort him.
"I mean, if he was going to hurt someone, he would have done it when he was in your office, right?"
Again, Sean didn't look as though he believed me.
"Call your mom," he said, pointing at the phone. "Tell her we'll be there in a few hours. It's about time we told everyone everything. The sooner we do that, the sooner everything can get back to normal."
Normal... In the moment it seemed like the most ridiculous word.
I thought about calling my mom but couldn't bring myself to do it, not yet anyway. Instead, I looked out the window at the passing countryside. There were mountains prickling up on the horizon like the jaws of a great beast. Suddenly, I was gripped by a tremendous wanderlust and wanted to climb them, wanted to climb every mountain in the world. Without Arthur I felt free and with Sean by my side I felt strong.
"You look happy," he said as he noticed the smile on my face.
"I am. I'm scared but I'm happy."
"Me too," he said, his eyes widening as he looked in the rearview mirror.
"What's the matter?" I asked as I noticed his expression changing.
"Nothing..." he replied, "Nothing at all."
He smiled again and rubbed my shoulder. I leaned forward to kiss him but as I moved, there was a deafening noise, the sensation of being jolted so violently that my limbs became weightless. There was a crunch, the screech of tires and the blaring of car horns. There was a scream, the sound of Sean calling out my name followed by the glittering sight of splintered glass falling across my face like bejeweled snow.
Then silence.
I opened my eyes and saw the sky through the twisted metal of the car's roof. Turning my head to the right, I saw a flash of white paint, a disfigured BMW badge and a blown out tire.
"Sean?" my voice croaked.
I tried to sit up but couldn't. The dashboard was lying across my chest.
"Sean?"
All I could move was my hand and I felt around for the sensation of his body. At last, I made contact with his hand and began crying when I felt his warm fingers.
"Sean?" I sobbed.
His fingers curled themselves around mine.
"Paige? Are you okay?"

Chapter One
Paige
I was crying from both the pain and the sadness. When the dashboard connected with my chest it broke three ribs and my sternum, my lungs only narrowly escaping being punctured by a shard of broken bone.
Sean, on the other hand was far luckier than I was and only suffered a mild concussion and a broken nose from where the steering wheel impacted his face. Who said modern cars were crap? As it turns out, they’re a lot sturdier than we realized. Both of us agreed we could have died.
Arthur, however, came off worse. When he plowed headlong into us he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, something that truly showed his state of mind. Ever the sensible type, he always insisted on everyone wearing one. He was the kind of man who wore a bulletproof helmet just to cycle through the park. Even as a kid he’d kit himself out in padded body armor just to glide around his neighborhood in his roller-skates. The fact that he wasn’t wearing a seat belt meant, to me at least, that he was out of his mind.
As soon as his car crunched into the back of ours, he was sent flying through the windscreen. He landed twenty feet away from his car before being brutally hit by an oncoming mini driven by a terrified old lady on her way to visit her husband in hospital. Needless to say, he didn’t survive.
I didn’t know what to think about it. On one hand he was my husband and there was some place deep down where I cared for him. We’d shared a life together and were legally bonded. I slept next to him every night and cleaned his clothes, cooked for him, and tended to him when he was
sick. I may not have liked him, may have at times thought he was insufferable but he was my other half, whether I wanted that or not. It confused me. Part of me was somewhat relieved that I’d never have to endure his company again, but that only made me guilty, gave me a black rotten feeling that spread to my core. Not to mention, yes, he was annoying, yes, he was a creep and yes, I often found him repulsive but he wasn’t a bad man. If anything, he was a startlingly good man who was just bad at expressing it. He had an unwavering devotion to me no matter how cruel I was to him. I guess you could say I was mourning him, but as I stood at his graveside, it could only be felt as a tumultuous medley of a thousand conflicted feelings.
Obviously, Sean wasn’t here. There was no way he could be although he did ask to be my side. I couldn’t bear the thought of Arthur’s family making judgments about us. They hated me already, probably blamed me for his death. But was it my fault? A part of me believed it was.
The closed casket was lowered into the ground with the priest saying his magic words and his family sniveling all around me. His mother began to wail as his coffin sunk into the earth, her knees digging into the mud as she collapsed sobbing. Her husband struggled to raise her and attempted to yank her up by her arms but she remained on her knees.
“Barbara, come on, get up.”
I sensed he wasn’t trying to comfort her but was instead embarrassed at the spectacle. At last, he gave up and let her cry. One by one, the family skirted around her, said a few words of respect and tossed a handful of dirt onto the coffin. In single file, they traipsed back over to the church where the cars waited to take them back to his parents’ house.
I let them all walk away until only the priest and I remained at the graveside. He seemed to be waiting for me to leave and I was doing the same with him.
“Would you like some time alone?” he asked.
I nodded and he departed with a solemn bow. A moment later, it was just me and Arthur. Crouching down, I teetered on the edge of the grave, my shoes slipping on the wet ground as I tried to not fall in.
