The Apartment (An Apartment Novel Book 1)

“Uh…” He had no idea how to recover from his blunder. What would Eric think of him now?
“Ethan, don’t bail on me now, man. Talk to me.” The look Eric gave him let him know that he wasn’t going to be able to weasel out of this. Ethan decided that even if it made Eric hate him, at least he would be able to say that he successfully distracted his brother from what was happening at the hospital.
“Well,” Ethan sighed. “I guess you could say that I had a small cocaine habit.”
“I didn’t realize there was such a thing as a small coke habit.”
Ethan flinched. This was going about as well as he had expected. “That came out wrong.” He fidgeted with his napkin as he tried to think of how to explain it so that Eric would understand. “I didn’t mean that the habit was small. That shit did a fucking number on me. I just meant that it’s not like I was strung out all this time, only for about a year.”
“How the hell did you get wrapped up in that shit?”
“Rachel. She kept talking it up and suggesting that it would help me paint faster.”
“Are you fucking serious?” Eric snapped, barely containing a yell. “That fucking bitch.”
“Not that I feel like defending anything she’s done right now, but I’ve come to accept my own role in it, too. I never should have started. I’d give anything to be able to go back and tell her to fuck off.”
“Yeah, I’d like to go with you,” Eric grumbled. “But you’re all clean now, right?”
Ethan sighed and looked down at his hands. “Trust me, I have no desire to go through that bullshit again.” He knew it didn’t matter what he said, and that now he’d always be an addict in his brother’s eyes.
“Thanks for telling me about it, man. That sounds really hard, and I think you’re really strong to come out on the other side. I won’t bring it up again, but just know that you can talk to me about it anytime.”
Ethan’s head snapped up and he stared at his brother. That was it? Eric didn’t seem mad anymore, and he didn’t seem ashamed to have an ex-druggie brother. He almost seemed…proud of him? Was that even possible? It was such a revelation that Ethan was stunned speechless until Eric spoke again.
“So after rehab you left?”
“I planned to, but she must have seen it coming because she beat me to it. We were in New York for a gallery opening. I was hoping that since we were back in the country it would be easier and more civil. We could go our separate ways and neither of us would be stuck in Europe alone, you know?” Ethan looked up from his coffee into his brother’s caring blue eyes. “I underestimated how much she didn’t want to be left. Not because she loved me, but because she had to have the upper hand.
Eric shook his head, trying to make sense of everything he was learning. “So rather than let you leave amicably, she dumped you first?”
“Well, I don’t think ‘dumping me first’ is adequate enough to describe what she did. When I came home that night she had completely cleaned me out. Everything was gone from our room, even my luggage. She left me a note that said I had no more to give her. She went on to describe her new protégé and thanked me for providing her the startup money she would need to launch his career.”
“She didn’t!”
“You betcha. I checked and she had taken everything I transferred to my American account to get us by for months.”
“That’s really fucked up.”
“I know.”
“But—Rachel? I never would have pegged her as capable of something like that.”
“I don’t think any of you ever really knew her.”
After a few moments of silence, Eric pushed further. “Do Mom and Dad know how bad it was?”
“Absolutely not. I’m not sure I want them to know.” But maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
“Ethan.” He wouldn’t say anything else until Ethan met his gaze. “They’ll understand. I know they’ll be sad that you had to suffer through that, and Mom will cry and wonder why you never came home to us, but in the end they’ll be supportive.”
“I don’t want to embarrass them,” he whispered.
“What?” Eric’s eyes bugged out. “Are we talking about the same people?”
“Think about it. The son who they think is a wonderful success in life is nothing but a cokehead who shut them out of his life for nearly ten years while he ran off with someone he didn’t even like very much, who later stole all of his shit. How does that make me look?”
Eric thought for a second. “Okay, on paper, it’s not great, I’ll grant you that. But I’m not stupid enough to believe that’s the whole story. I won’t make you tell me anymore now if you aren’t ready, but it’s pretty obvious to me that she was seriously messed up from the beginning. I always felt like there was something funny about you guys, but Maggie just said you were probably snobs.”
They both laughed at that, and their deep, husky voices pulled the waitress to them like a magnet, coffee pot in hand for refills. Once she’d left again, Ethan leaned forward and smiled, feeling lighter in his brother’s company than he had felt in years. “Maggie wasn’t exactly wrong, you know. I was a pompous ass for a long time. I thought I was above it all.”
“Above what, though? Being in love?”
“Well… yeah. I’ve never really thought about it, but I guess that’s right.”
“Nobody is above it, man. It either happens or it doesn’t. You just haven’t met the right one yet. Don’t think that because I was a goner at eighteen that everyone is supposed to be.”
“I don’t think I’d know it if it hit me over the head, to tell you the truth. I have no reference to go by. All I know is sex, and even that was fairly rusty until recently.” Beautiful hazel eyes and soft pink lips flashed through his mind, and he ignored the warm feeling that it caused.
“Well, just don’t fuck it up and mistake one for the other. If you find something worth keeping, you owe it to yourself to see it through.” Eric stopped his fork halfway to his mouth when he realized what Ethan had let slip. “Wait a minute. Did you say until recently?”
“Uh, pardon?” Ethan swallowed so hard that his brother could see it across the table.
“Dude, are you already fucking someone? Here?”
“Keep your voice down, asshole!” Ethan shot glances across the room, making sure nobody was paying attention to their conversation.
“Oh my God, you totally are! Who is it? Come on, tell me! Is it someone from high school? Some old crush wishing she’d never let you go?” He started batting his lashes and making kissy faces.
“Eric, shut the fuck up. I’m not going to talk to you about it.”
“No way, that’s so unfair. Do you remember how much you whined and begged until I told you about my first time? Payback is a bitch, isn’t it? Besides, you’re rebounding in a very small pond, brother dear. You might as well tell me, because I’m sure I can find out by other means if I have to.”
Ethan put his head in his hands and groaned, cursing himself for not thinking when he spoke. “I can’t tell you what I don’t know,” he mumbled, his hands muffling his voice.
“What the hell does that mean?”
Ethan’s eyes darted around the room again before meeting Eric’s expectant look. “It means that I don’t know her name.”
“Was it a one-nighter? Didn’t bother to ask it?”
“No,” Ethan felt his cheeks heating. “There have been numerous… encounters.”
Eric stared at him for a minute in total silence. “Okay, forgive me if I’m coming off as thick here, but how the hell is that even possible? Do you just never speak?”
“No, we speak a lot, actually. She’s really very lovely.”
“Then why don’t you know her name?”
“Because I demanded that she not tell it to me.” At Eric’s puzzled look, he explained in more detail. “I was upset about Rachel, I felt like everything was closing in around me, and then she just appeared, like some sort of angel or goddess. I
t was perfect, and I didn’t want to sully it with names and facts about each other. I wanted to keep her as my own private treasure that only existed for me while I was here.” He looked to see if Eric was following him. “When I’m with her, it’s like nothing else matters.”
“So why don’t you swap names and start dating? It sounds like a little bit more than a fuck to me.”
“Because I’m not available like that. I’m too damaged for anybody else right now, and with my art I might need to pack up and leave for New York any day.”
“Don’t give me that shit. You can paint anywhere.”
“Not always. I have to be inspired. Besides, I don’t think she’s exactly single. This is just a fling to her, too. We’re having our fun while it lasts and then that will be that.” Perhaps if he said it enough he might start to believe it.
Eric arched an eyebrow as he studied his brother, smelling the bullshit from a mile away. “Mmhmm, well, if that’s what you want to tell yourself, that’s fine by me. I just hope you know what you’re doing.”
“I do!” he snapped, uncomfortable under Eric’s scrutiny. “Now can we please drop this?”
“Alright, you big baby, let’s get back to the hospital. I want to see if Maggie is up yet.” Eric stood up and reached for the check, but Ethan grabbed it out from under his hand before he could pick it up.
“I said it was my treat, remember?”
“Well yeah, but you entertained me with so much dirt about yourself that I figured I should pay.” He smiled wickedly and reached for the check again.
“Ha-ha, very funny. And no way, I’m treating.”
They walked up to the counter to pay, standing in line behind a middle-aged man who was picking up a takeout order. Eric looked at his profile long enough to make out the moustache and smiled broadly, reaching around Ethan and tapping the man on the shoulder.
“Hey, Mr. Blake, I thought that was you!”
The man turned around and smiled back. “Eric,” he said gruffly, nodding at him. “How have you been? Are those Bears going to be worth a damn this fall?”
“I hope so! I only get at them after they’re injured, though, so let’s hope I don’t see too many breaks next season.”
“How’s your father doing? I haven’t seen him since he stopped in and visited me at the hospital after my injury. It’s been, what? A couple years now.”
“Oh, he’s real good. Still a workaholic, but we love him. I totally forgot you were hurt a while back. Looks like you’re up and around pretty good now, though. I didn’t even see you limping.”
“Well, I owe it all to my Lily. She moved down here to help me recover, and I don’t know what I would have done without her.”
“Is that your daughter?” When the man nodded, Eric’s face lit up in recognition, knowing he had heard the name Lily a lot lately. “Hey, wait a minute! Does she work over at Dr. Wilde’s office?”
“That’s right.” Mr. Blake paid for his order while looking back over his shoulder at Eric. When he was done he moved out of the way so Ethan could pay their bill. “Know her from there? I didn’t think there would be much call for a guy your age to get a pap smear.”
“Cute, Mr. Blake,” Eric rolled his eyes. “No, actually my wife just adores her. She said that she always goes above and beyond for the patients there. Maggie was just saying the other day that she wanted to have her over some time. I’ll have to let her know she’s your daughter.”
“I hope that won’t turn her against her,” Mr. Blake chuckled. “I know your wife wasn’t my biggest fan after the last time I saw her.”
“Uh, heh, you remember that, huh?” Eric turned beet red. “Well, that was a long time ago, and we were just dumb kids.”
“Oh, I know. But I must say that I was happy to hear you made an honest woman of her after that.”
Looking to change the subject quickly, Eric saw that Ethan had finished paying and was turning around. “Hey, I’m sorry. Do you remember my brother Ethan?” He patted him on the back so hard that Ethan was shoved slightly forward.
“I don’t think I do. I knew you had a younger brother, but I don’t think I’ve ever had the pleasure.” He reached out his hand and shook Ethan’s, addressing him directly. “It’s probably a good thing that I don’t remember you, since most of the kids I’m familiar with were troublemakers.”
“Nice to meet you, sir. I’m suddenly very happy that I was a bookworm in school.” They all shared a laugh until Ethan realized they were holding up the line. “I suppose we should be going.”
“Yeah,” Mr. Blake agreed. “I need to get over to the school and eat my breakfast before it gets cold. I just got back in town from chaperoning the damn student government trip, and I’ve probably got a stack of papers on my desk a mile high. It was nice seeing you again, Eric. Nice to meet you, Ethan. Stay out of trouble, boys.” He winked at them before leaving and jumping in his car.
“Nice guy,” Ethan said as they walked to their own car. When they were both inside he looked at Eric and smiled. “So what did he bust you for?”
“Shut up and get going,” he snapped back, turning even redder than before. When Ethan only continued to sit there and look at him, he finally caved. “He didn’t bust me, exactly. He let me go with a warning.”
“For?”
“Remember that first homecoming weekend when I brought Maggie home from college? Well, I took her to the football game to show her my old stomping ground. When we got in my car to leave that night, things… got a little heated. My car was the only one left in the parking lot when Mr. Blake drove up—I guess he forgot some papers in his office or something. Anyway, he saw my car there and expected to find a drunken teenager passed out behind the wheel, but instead he found Maggie blowing me.”
Ethan threw his head back and laughed, wiping a tear from his eye as he started the engine. “And that’s why I never tried anything like that in a car.”
“Hey man, don’t knock it. What you don’t get caught doing can make the risk worth it!”
Ethan drove him back to the hospital, noticing that he hadn’t felt so light in weeks.
Upon seeing the large building come into view, he also made a mental note to stop by the store on the way home. He definitely needed to pick up sponges and bubble bath.
Chapter 19
There was no other way to say it.
Ethan wanted to fuck in a car.
Ever since Eric admitted to getting busted back in college with Maggie’s head in his lap while parked in the high school lot, Ethan hadn’t been able to shake the feeling that he’d missed out on a lot of fun activities when he was younger. He had gone from being a shy, bookish introvert to a pretentious snob who was above that kind of thing. By the time he had hooked up with Rachel—well, if designer sheets weren’t involved, she wasn’t interested.
But now? Now he had her.
Something told Ethan that his goddess wouldn’t be adverse to a little bit of backseat bingo—if he could first get her in his car, that is. They’d never set one foot outside his studio together before, but he was hoping that since it was Valentine’s Day he might be able to persuade her to try something different.
Although his goddess had spent a surprising amount of time with him that week, he hadn’t been holding onto any expectations of seeing her on Valentine’s. As much as he hated to think about it, Ethan knew that she had someone else in her life who had a much bigger claim on her than he did. He assumed that she would be spending the evening with the other guy, which is why he was blown away when she’d told him that morning that she would be back again later that night.
So he began to plan. He went to the store and picked up a few essentials to pack in a bag, not forgetting a fleece throw to finish it off—it was February, after all. Ethan was counting on hot, sweaty groping that would keep them both overheated, but there was nothing wrong with being prepared.
He was so excited by the idea of dragging his girl off somewhere different for a change that he c
ould barely stop himself from attacking her when she let herself into the apartment later that afternoon. Lily was wearing her workout clothes again, some black sweats and a red shirt that said The Ladies Go Crazy for My Sugalumps on the front, and she looked adorable. When he saw her reach for her jacket he finally remembered that he had a voice.
“Leave it on,” he whispered, crossing the room to meet her at the door.
“Oookay?” she said with a puzzled look on her face.
Ethan grabbed her jacket by the collar, pulling it back up into place on her shoulders before looking her deep in the eye. “Trust me.”
“You suddenly have a jacket fetish?” she teased.
“Very cute, but no. You’ll need it to stay warm.”
“Warm? What do you—?” Understanding dawned in her eyes. “Where are we going?”
He grabbed his own coat and threw it on before taking her hand and leading her to the door.
“You’ll see.”
Ethan led her down the stairway, pulling her behind him until they made it to the door at the bottom. When he reached out to touch the handle, she stopped in her tracks. He looked back at her to see what was the matter, surprised to find a worried look on her face.
“You okay?” he asked.
Lily’s eyes shot back and forth between him and the door a few times before settling on his face. He watched as she took a deep breath and sighed, finally ending with a small smile.
“I think so,” she replied. “Just nervous.”
“Don’t be. Can you trust me?”
Her cheeks turned beet red as she pictured the tube of lube that was still upstairs. “You know I can.”
He smiled at her and kissed her quickly. “Then trust me now. I won’t let anyone see you.” Pulling her with him into the alley, Ethan looked around quickly for any witnesses before leading her to his car in the parking lot. Once they were inside and backing out of the spot he was in, he heard her quietly giggle to herself.
“What’s so funny?” He looked at her across the interior, wondering what the hell could be so humorous when she had just been scared to even step outside with him.
