When the song ended, and the radio started advertising the latest carpet store opening, Josh shut it off and guided his vehicle toward the side of the one road that ran the length of the key, to the sound of crashing surf only fifty feet away from where they parked.

Darius unfastened his seat belt. “I love this beach. It’s my favorite in the area. Too bad dogs aren’t allowed on it. King would love it here.”

“It’s my favorite also.” Josh unbuckled and got out as Darius followed. They walked down the short stretch of sidewalk that opened onto the beach. Immediately they kicked off their shoes and socks, leaving them on the sand to retrieve later.

Josh inhaled the scent of salt water. “Damn, I love that smell. Nothing better in this world.”

“I don’t know,” Darius began. “Downtown Detroit has a pretty unique scent. It’s quite memorable.”

Josh chuckled. “I bet it is, but I have to take your word for it. I’ve never been there. Do you miss it?”

“I thought I would, but I don’t, not really. My dad and some friends, maybe. But all in all, I’m happy I came here. This is a beautiful place, and I’m enjoying meeting new people.” Darius took Josh’s hand in his. “Specifically, one person in particular.”

“That’s what I like to hear,” Josh returned, Darius’s touch heating up every cell in his body.

“Let’s go over here,” Josh suggested, squinting into the darkness. “There’s a flat spot on the sand that doesn’t get too saturated during high tide.” Josh guided Darius close to the water’s edge, the sound of the surf crashing on shore pounding in his ears. It was a perfect spot to have sex; no one would be able to hear his moans of ecstasy over the surf. Josh stopped and turned. “Can you kiss me the same way you did before?”

“Sure, but from what you said earlier, I figured that you wanted to take things slowly.”

Josh pressed his body against Darius. “Fuck that,” Josh said into his ears. “And fuck me.”

They were down on the sand before Josh knew what had happened. Darius’s hands were skilled at undoing buttons in record time. His shirt successfully shed, Darius moved on to Josh’s pants. “Damn, are you a magician? I’ve never been undressed so quickly.”

With one yank, Josh’s pants and underwear were down around his ankles. “I don’t want to waste time on the small stuff, and I don’t intend to get interrupted when I’m sucking you off.”

What can I say to that, Josh thought, except, “Have at it.”

Lying flat on his back, the sand cool against his heated skin, Josh felt Darius’s mouth engulf his cock. Josh placed his hands on the back of Darius’s head as his lover rode his cock with his mouth. He fixated on the full moon directly overhead as the rush of orgasm overcame him. The crash of waves melded with his passionate cries, Darius taking every last drop of his load. When Josh was able to return to earth, he blinked Darius into focus.

“How in the holy hell did you make me come so quickly? I’m almost embarrassed how quickly I shot.” He swallowed laboriously. “Almost.”

“You do something to me,” Darius admitted. “The way you walk, the way you smile, the way you taste.” He licked his bottom lip. “You’re perfection.”

“I feel like I’m the one who should be saying that to you. What you did … down there”—Josh swallowed again—“was simply amazing.”

“I pride myself on my cock-sucking abilities.”

Even in the darkness, Josh could still see Darius’s brilliant smile. “I can understand why.”

Josh scanned the immediate area for any onlookers or cops on patrol, hoping to catch people in the middle of exactly what they were doing right then.

  They were safe.

“I have a fantasy you can help me out with,” Josh said. “That is, if you’re willing.”

“If it includes anything to do with that sweet ass of yours, count me in.”

Josh reached into his pants pocket and dug out a condom that he had placed there earlier just in case the night turned out the way it was going. “Take down your pants,” he commanded.

Darius’s jeans and underwear were out of the way as fast as Josh could say Levi Strauss. He chuckled inwardly, heady with the power he had over the attractive man.

“Stick out your hand,” Josh now directed.

Darius did what he was told.

Already hard, Darius tore the foil wrapper with his teeth. “Turn over.” It was his turn to get bossy.

Josh turned over and got on all fours. He reached behind him and swatted sand off his butt. “I’m ready.”

Sliding the condom onto his dick, Darius said, “You’d better be.”

Using his saliva as natural lube, Darius spat on his hand and slicked it over his length. He pressed the tip of his cock against Josh’s anus. “You really want me to do this? Now? Here?”

“You want to rethink this and stop?”

  “Nope.”

  “Then fuck me good.”

Darius pushed in, slowly, as Josh’s anus adapted to Darius’s thickness.

After the first initial stabs of pain, Josh took the pleasure Darius gave. As minutes passed, they fell into a natural rhythm. Josh met every one of Darius’s thrusts. Josh’s brain swam with pleasure as the words of desire and praise fell from Darius’s lips.

“I love the way you fuck me,” Josh said. “Your cock feels so good. So thick.”

Darius quickened his pace. “You’re so tight, babe. So fucking heavenly.”

Josh’s breath caught in his throat as his nut sac tightened. He reached down and stroked. “I’m going to—”

“Shoot?” Darius said. “Me too.” His voice was strained and edgy. Darius pumped hard, massaging Josh’s sweet spot.

Abandoning himself to pleasure, Josh chased relief by jacking his cock furiously as Darius claimed him from behind. The sound of Josh’s heart replaced the sound of the water’s waves as his brain shattered with a powerful orgasm. His body convulsed as ropes of cum saturated his hand and spilled to the sand below. Darius cried out, stilled, and then collapsed his full weight onto Josh. The two men were a heap of molten moaning flesh. Unable to support Darius’s weight, Josh collapsed. Exhausted and sated, Josh relished in the feeling of Darius’s half-naked flesh against his own.

They lay, entwined together, for what felt like an eternity until Darius began to stir. “So far we’ve been lucky,” Darius said. “We really should get dressed and go before we get caught.”

“Do we have to?” Josh asked.

“We’ll do this again. I promise you.”

Those were the words Josh wanted to hear, and he intended to hold Darius to that promise.

“I had a great time.” Sweet and playful, Darius waggled his eyebrows. “I will never think of the beach the same way again.” He shifted in the seat. “And I think I have to shower before hitting the bed. I have sand in places there shouldn’t be sand. Microdermabrasion for the ass.”

“Yeah, me too.” Josh squirmed; granules scratched the skin on his butt. “It’s not such a bad sensation,” he joked.

“The only thing I want causing a sensation down there is you.”

“It that an invitation for another date?”

“Can’t believe you have to ask,” Darius said.

“When?” Why beat around the bush? Josh liked what he saw and didn’t want Darius to slip between his fingers. “Tomorrow, late afternoon? I’m working at the bakery in the morning, and then I have class at two, after that I’m free. Come by my place. We can hang out by the pool, and you can meet a few guys at the complex. They’re slutty and will probably salivate all over you, but deep down they are good guys, shallow but still good. Or on second thought, scratch that. I’m cooking dinner instead. I’m not ready to share you with those vultures. They can get their own guy.”

“Sounds like a great plan.” Before getting out of the truck, Darius asked Josh to text him his address. Through the open window, he leaned in and kissed Josh once again.
See you tomorrow,” Darius said. “Drive safe, and leave me some sand to shower away. Sounds like a wonderful new hobby I wouldn’t mind picking up.”

Josh revved the engine. “Go to bed, funny guy.” He removed his foot off the brake, the vehicle starting to move. “Can’t wait until tomorrow. Bring a hearty appetite.” With that, Josh headed home, happier and more hopeful than he’d been in a long time.

Darius walked down the sidewalk, a gentle breeze cooling his still heated skin. The date exceeded any expectations he’d had, and the sex sent him to the outer stratosphere and back. Josh was an unforgettable guy all the way around, handsome, funny, an amazing lover. Yep, unforgettable.

The outside light, nothing but a bare bulb by the front door, flashed on, illuminating the immediate area. Thoughts of Josh naked on the beach, his face in the throes of ecstasy, were decimated when Estelle yanked open the door.

“What is the matter with you?” Her face looked like stone.

Darius braced himself for yet another fight. He released a deep sigh, feeling deflated, exhilaration turning to exhaustion in under a second. “Keep your voice down, or you’re going to wake up the neighborhood.”

“It’s obvious that you’re not worried about the neighbors.”

  “What are you referring to?”

“I saw you kiss that white boy as plain as day.” Her voice was full of vitriol. “Do you have no shame?”

“I don’t find anything shameful about kissing a man. You might, but I don’t.” He kept walking, hoping to blow past Estelle, but her hand wrapped around his arm, ruining his intentions. He refrained from dislodging her grip with a quick yank. He stopped and looked down into her narrowed, angry eyes. He smelled booze on her breath. “Mom, I’m tired, and I’m not in the mood.”

“Do you think I was in the mood to see the devil sinning on my doorstep?”

He shrugged her loose. “You should listen to yourself. You sound crazy.”

“I may sound crazy, but you are crazy. Kissing boys.” Her face puckered, and she stuck out her tongue. “May God have mercy on your soul and for me putting up with it.”

“Please, Mother, you have to stop drinking. It’s going to kill you.”

She turned away. “What do you know?” Her speech was slurred. She stumbled, and Darius grabbed her until she could recover her stability. He walked her over to a small kitchen table, sitting her in a chair.

“If your liver and kidneys don’t shut down first, you could lose your balance and hit your head. What would happen if I weren’t here? You could bleed to death or slip into a coma.”

She rubbed her hands over her face. “Don’t be so damn dramatic.” She looked up, mascara smudged under her lids. “I’m not some clumsy imbecile who can’t place one foot in front of another.”

“It’s called an accident for a reason.”

“I don’t like what you’re implying, that your mother is a drunk who can’t stand upright.”

Darius crouched in front of his mother, meeting her at eye level. “Maybe you should talk to someone, or attend a group meeting.”

She pushed him back, but Darius didn’t fall backward.

“Now why would I want to do something as stupid as that?” Her eyes swam in their sockets as she attempted to steady her gaze. “Besides, I don’t have a problem with alcohol. I drink it. I feel good. End of story.”

  “Do you feel good now?”

“I feel fine, angry that you did what you did out there, but fine nonetheless.” Her hand flopped toward the door.

“You won’t feel good tomorrow.” He stood, sand pricking in the waistband of his underwear. He extended his hand. “Please allow me to put you in bed. You need to rest.”

Estelle shook her head and mumbled a few indecipherable words.

  “Suit yourself.”

Darius retracted his hand. He stood over his mother and prayed that she would find strength and clarity one day soon. When her body slumped against the table, he scooped her to her feet and guided her to her bedroom, placing Estelle in her bed.

“Night,” Darius said as he closed the door and headed for his room.

  Chapter Seven

  “Well?”

Celeste’s bright big smile greeted Josh. “How did it go?”

Josh returned the smile, fighting back a giggle of joy.

Celeste didn’t wait for a verbal confirmation. She dropped a rack of freshly baked cookies onto the counter and ran to envelop Josh in a huge hug. “I knew you two would hit it off.”

Josh twirled his aunt, hugging her hard. “That is an understatement,” he cheered in her ear. Setting her down after a few more turns, he kissed her hard on the cheek. “I am so happy.”

Celeste tapped Josh’s cheeks with her hands. “It’s so good to finally hear you say those words.”

“Nothing can go wrong. I can feel it in my soul. Darius is the one for me.”

“You fall fast and hard, like me. It runs in the family.” She gave him one quick hug before directing Josh to get to work. After stocking the case full of cupcakes, cookies, and an assortment of pies and cakes, Josh turned up the tunes that actually sounded good today as he swept the café. Whistling along to a whale song that featured a lute, Josh and Celeste prepared for the day, their good moods infectious. Customers filtered in and if they weren’t smiling when they entered, they were when they left. Celeste had baked extra bear claws, and by midmorning, the sweet-smelling and even sweeter tasting buns were close to selling out.

Josh didn’t see the forty-something-year-old black woman wander in, but when she tapped her hand on the top of the glass counter, she made sure she would not go unnoticed. When she leveled her gaze at Josh, it reminded him of a hawk spotting its prey. He had waited on moody customers before, but judging by the slight woman’s body language, he knew it would take more than a promise of an extra shot in her cappuccino to make her smile.

“Good morning,” he greeted, planning to kill the customer with kindness.

“Are you the young man who was outside my house last night kissing my son?”

A couple in the café turned to look at Josh, their eyes peering over the rim of their coffee cups.

Josh pasted on a smile as a film of cold sweat exploded over his forehead. He stuck out his hand. “You must be Darius’s mother.”

The woman gave a curt nod. “Estelle Warner.”

Josh opened his mouth, but Estelle cut him off before he could form any words.

“I would greatly appreciate it if you would keep your hormones in check when parked in my neighborhood.”

Painfully obvious that the woman wasn’t going to accept his offer of a handshake, he stuck both hands into the pockets of his apron. “I was on a date,” he offered as some sort of an excuse or explanation as to why he kissed Darius.

“Allow me to make another suggestion. Why don’t you find someone else to date? My son’s busy with finding a job and taking care of business, his business and mine, not yours.”

Heat rose up Josh’s neck and flushed on his cheeks. He wished that the nosey couple would drink their coffees and get the hell out. “I don’t mean to be rude or disrespectful, ma’am, but I like Darius, and to me, he appears to be able to make his own decisions.”

“Sometimes a mother needs to step in and guide her son to better things.”

A snort came from the café as Josh wished he could be anywhere but here. “I’m sorry you feel this way,” he began, his voice controlled, “but instead of having this talk with me, maybe you should be having it with Darius. This is a place of business and airing our differences in public is uncomfortable and unnecessary.”

Estelle moved slightly forward, her features unyielding. “Are you telling me I don’t know how to act in public? Whatever happened to the customer is always right?”

  “Are you ordering something?”

“If I do, then can I tell you how unhappy I am that my one and only son is dating a man I don’t approve of?” />
“Is it just me or all men in general?”

Estelle snapped her fingers and then pointed at Josh. “Bingo,” she said. “You’re smarter than you look.”

“What will you be having? May I suggest a vanilla cupcake with banana cream icing?” Josh’s suggestion was met with a wrinkled nose. He continued, “No, then? Moving on. How about the classic German chocolate? We have generous slices of cake if you prefer. Your choice.”

  “I’m allergic to chocolate.”

“So basically you came here to do what, to warn me off your son? Isn’t he old enough to make his own choices in his life?”

“Don’t disrespect the mother of the man you’re dating. It’s really not a smart thing to do.”

“Don’t you want me to drop him?”

“He’s a nice boy, and I don’t want him hurt. Honestly, I wished your name was Jennifer and you weren’t that pasty color that you are, but that’s between me and God, I guess. Darius knows how I feel about his preference, but he does what and who he likes.”

It was a bit on the vulgar side, but Josh was able to accept it. “I can get a spray tan on the extra dark side if that’ll make you accept me.”

Josh noticed the corners of Estelle’s mouth quirk ever so slightly. “I don’t believe that will help.”

Celeste stepped from the kitchen, a few wispy curls fluttering in her wake. “Is my nephew telling you about all the scrumptious things we offer here?”

“I’ve been here before.” Estelle perused the bakery case, her eye stalling on an apple cinnamon muffin before looking at Celeste again. “I’ll take one of those and two chocolate chip cookies for my Darius.”
