  The walk to the stairway was short, and when she reached it, she looked down the steps. The cream light from the chandelier in the kitchen poured into the hallway at the bottom, and within it was her mother’s fragile shadow.

  As she took each step carefully—to ensure that she didn’t aggravate her leg—the back door slammed again. Soon she saw her father’s shadow appear. It looked like he had something in his hands, but she couldn’t tell what it was.

  The next moment, whatever he was holding raised high above his head. A second later, he brought it down fast and hard. She heard a soft thud and a sickening crack, and her mother’s shadows disappeared from the wall. [Back to Contents]
