“Well, I never have been the delicate type.”
“Delicate? Is that what it takes?”
Eddie gave a slight shrug. “I don’t know, I…”
Suddenly there was a loud blast that sounded like a gun shot, and Eddie instinctively grabbed Adam and ran for cover, only to find it was a car backfiring. Both men relaxed as they leaned against a building, taking a big, thankful breath as they looked at each other with relief.
“Sorry,” Eddie said. “I hope you haven’t changed your mind.”
“No,” Adam said, looking frightened. “It…it’s okay, really.”
“Are you sure? You look a little shook up.”
“No, really. I’m fine,” Adam said nervously.
What Eddie didn’t see was how the baby blue hue of Adam’s eyes had become shaded over with worry as he gazed out into the city street and could almost see the slink of death creeping out of every abyss and crevice, and knew he would have to accept the fact that a scare such as this could have very easily been the real thing. But Adam did have one thing. As bad as it was, and may become, when the bedroom door closed, and they were snug in each other’s arms, that was what made it all worthwhile—in the dangerous life of a Back-Alley Cop and his lover.
