He watched her as she moved back toward the cabin, then turned and breathed the air laden with the scent of earth and water and evergreens. Old memories flooded him, but he shut them out. This is a night to think of the future!
Finally he turned and walked slowly back and entered the cabin. Melora stood in the kitchen wearing a white silk gown. Her eyes seemed enormous as she gave him a look that he could not understand.
He took her in his arms, marveling at the incredible smoothness of her skin, savoring the scent of violets—but stronger than that was the fragrance that was simply Melora—feminine and mysterious.
She was trembling in his arms, and Clay whispered, “Are you afraid, sweet?”
“Just a little.” But then she put her arms around his head and whispered fiercely, “But I’m your wife now, Clay. All that I am is yours!”
Clay said huskily, “Melora, I’ll never stop loving you—never!” When he found her lips, they were soft and vulnerable but at the same time firm and willing. He then led her to their bridal bedroom.
“Are you going to sleep all day?”
Clay woke up with a start to find Melora standing over him pulling his hair. He caught her arm and pulled her down. She struggled, but he ignored her efforts. “No, I’m not going to sleep all day.”
Melora’s cheeks were bright with color, and she couldn’t meet his eyes for a moment; then she gave his hair a jerk so hard that he yelped. “Do you want breakfast or not?” she demanded.
Clay rubbed his head, then smiled. “Come here, wife!” he commanded.
Melora colored even more brightly, but she came to sit beside him. “I must be an obedient wife,” she whispered against his chest as he held her.
Clay stroked her back, then said, “You know, I’ve often thought that you had a tiger in you—but now I know there’s a whole menagerie!”
“You’re awful!”
“You didn’t think—!”
Melora leaped up and ran out of the room, crying, “I’m going to throw your breakfast out the door!”
“Hey—don’t do that!” Clay yelped in alarm. “Give a man a chance to get his pants on!” He struggled into his clothes, then went into the other room to find his breakfast on the table. “Pancakes and bacon!” he said with satisfaction. “You always did make the best pancakes in the world!”
They ate; then Clay rose and said, “Come on. Let’s go fishing.”
“Now?” Melora asked in surprise. “Let me do the dishes first.”
Clay said, “Fishing is more important than washing dishes.” He paused then and came to her. Taking her hand, he studied the ring on her finger, then kissed the hand as he had during the wedding ceremony. Then he pulled her close, and when she was enfolded, he whispered, “Melora, I love you more than life. I…I feel like a man who’s wandered in some kind of…of deep dark woods, who finally finds his way home. Wherever you are, sweetheart, that’s home to me!”
Melora rested against him, feeling the steady, strong beating of his heart.
“Clay, let’s always be that—a home for each other!”
“We don’t have long.”
Fiercely she clung to him, and as her arms tightened about him, he heard her whisper, “We have now, Clay—and now is forever!”
