She grabs my hand before I can pick up the cutting board, and I grin as she examines the rings that I now wear every day. One is a princess-cut diamond, and the other is a diamond-studded white gold band that fits perfectly with the engagement ring. Garrett gave me the engagement ring about a week after he proposed. The band came later, when we had a small elopement ceremony in Hawaii.
“They’re gorgeous!” Christy says. “Garrett has good taste. This is exactly the type of ring I’d expect you to wear. It’s not too gaudy. I’m impressed.”
“I am, too…” I say dreamily, as I look out the window above the sink, and watch Garrett talking to Justin in the backyard. The deflated bouncy house is spread out over the grassy lawn. As I watch, Garrett motions to the pump and smiles at Justin. Then he trades spots with Justin and takes a turn trying to work the pump.
Christy joins me at the window. “Look at them go,” she says. “Think they’ll figure it out?”
I nod. “I hope so. If not, I think we’re going to have about a dozen disappointed kids around here in just a few hours.”
“Shoot!” Christy says, eyeing the clock. “It is one already? Everyone’s getting here at three. We’d better get the cake in the oven.”
With a bustle of activity, Christy and I manage to put together two side salads, a few plates of appetizers, and about two dozen pinwheel wraps stuffed with turkey, cheese, ham, and all sorts of veggies. We also bake two cakes—one chocolate with vanilla icing for the kids, and one tiramisu for the adults.
Then, with just fifteen minutes to spare before the guests arrive, we head out into the backyard, each carrying a bassinet. To our delight, a giant, dragon-shaped bouncy house is now erected in the middle of the backyard. The twins are still sleeping, so we set the bassinets in the shade.
Christy pumps her fists in the air as she jogs toward Ian. “Babe, you did it!” she says as she wraps her arms around him.
“Oh, I would have failed miserably if it wasn’t for this guy,” Justin says, motioning to Garrett with his thumb. “He figured out that we had the adapter on backward, which was why the pump wasn’t fitting right.”
I walk up to Garrett and wrap my arm around his waist. “I guess we can add ‘inflating bouncy houses’ to your already impressive résumé,” I say.
“I don’t know if that’s the kind of skill I really need to highlight,” he says with a laugh, pulling me closer into him. “Then again, I guess it depends on what kind of job I’d be applying for.”
“Are you looking for work?” I ask, teasing him.
“I think I have my hands full as it is,” he says. “Why, are you?” He looks down at me with a playful sparkle in his eye.
“Absolutely not,” I say. “No more ‘one day when’ syndrome or chasing carrots for me. I’ve found my prize—three beautiful children and a loving cowboy husband. Nothing could make me happier!”
I melt into my handsome husband’s arms as he takes my breath away with a kiss.
