Maggie and the Black-Tie Affair

He slapped his thighs and stood up. "I'm really glad." He reached out a hand to her and lifted her to her feet.

The stars were icy overhead, as cold and meaningless as the diamond earrings she wore. She fingered them thoughtfully. "I wonder how many beads I can buy with these," she muttered.

He laughed, the famous laugh that this time seemed filled with real joy. "Listen," he said.

The crowd back in the house was counting down: "five, four, three, two, one!"

  Then shouting and music.

But there on the sand, with the indigo sea whispering in front of them, all was peaceful, with the big dog leaning his hot, furry body against her thigh, and the tall man standing silently in the darkness next to her.

He leaned down and brushed her lips with a quick kiss, a platonic one, to greet the new year.

  She laughed.

  "What?"

"I do have something to celebrate," she said. "A new year. A new start. The journey's not half-over yet."

"Happy New Year, Magdalena," he said.

"Happy New Year, Stanley. Let's make it a good one."

Maggie's got a handsome movie star in her kitchen, a bead shop downtown… and a dead body in the swimming pool. Her new year may not be working out quite like she planned.

She thought starting over would be simple. But there are a few roadblocks on the road to happiness for Maggie and her friends—including that rather inconvenient corpse. Can she figure out who's behind the murder before the killer strikes again?
