Since the inception of the internet way back in August 1991, this global information highway has revolutionised life on earth as we know it. These days the whole world is at our fingertips 24/7. We can connect with people from all walks of life, share information, passions and hobbies. We can talk in real time to friends in different countries and research everything from the mundane (the best recipe for sourdough bread) to the extreme (so, what’s the best way to discard of a body in cold weather?).

I met one of my best friends, Kris, online over a decade ago; we had a shared interest in running that developed into a real-world friendship. My husband runs a huge website where hundreds of thousands of strangers stop by every day to chat and read about a London football team. It’s a brilliant community and it could not have happened without the internet.

  Go, technology!

But for every positive, there is a negative.

A few months before I began writing Last Goodbye, I read the ramblings of Elliot Rodger, a young 22 year-old man who, in 2014, shot six people to death in Isla Vista California. This in turn brought me to a very disturbing set of forums and down the rabbit hole into the world of the ‘incel’ (men who identify as involuntary celibates). What I read affected me so profoundly that ‘the wolf’ was born almost overnight. Unlike the majority of incels, who rage into the void, the wolf acts on his hatred.

I’d love to hear some of my readers’ views on Last Goodbye. Did you feel any empathy towards him? Understand what drove him? Is our society becoming a colder, more remote one? Have we lost our way a little?

I’d like to think technology has brought us closer together, but then there are days of raging Twitter wars, Facebook spats, and acts of cyber-bullying that make me despair. I think of Last Goodbye, alone in his room, festering, seething, lonely and filled with rage, and it scares me, because while my wolf is a work of fiction, there are many wolves out there who are not. I hope you loved Last Goodbye and if you did I would be very grateful if you could write a review. It makes such a difference helping new readers to discover one of my books for the first time. I’d love to know what you think.

  Acknowledgements

The book you’re reading right now is the result of intense collaboration. So thank you to my long-suffering agent, Faith O’Grady; thank you to the extremely kind and patient Jessie Botterill and Lydia Vassar-Smith; thank you and a million more to the one-woman dynamo that is Kim Nash. To the book bloggers of the world, I hope you know how much we appreciate all the hard work you do, book after book, year after year. On the home front, my thanks as always to my friends and family. Writing can be an insular gig at times, but when I do surface for air, it’s nice to have real people to swim towards. Andrew, no words needed for you, ducky; you already know my heart. Lastly, thank you to my readers. I cannot fully express how much you mean to me. I am grateful for you, for the time you take to read my books, for the emails, the tweets, the reviews, the word-of-mouth. Without you, writing would be a pointless exercise, so thank you all.
