William Stanier, pictured here in 1936, became the highly effective Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS in 1932.

The quietly brilliant Tom Coleman, posing here at his desk for the railway’s official photographer in 1936.

Stanier and Coleman’s masterwork was the Coronation class Pacific. In this mid-1950’s scene at Carlisle Citadel, 46231 Duchess of Atholl [left] prepares to take over from 46244 King George VI for the northward run of the Royal Scot express from London to Glasgow.

The Night Ferry prepares to leave London Victoria on 15 December 1947, behind the ‘air-smoothed’ Bulleid West Country Pacific 21C56 Croydon. Built at the beginning of that year, it was rebuilt in 1960 and withdrawn from service in May 1967.
