She reminded me of her “rules” on the way to the airport. I still wasn’t to come to Pawleys any time soon, but at least her rules were bending. She didn’t rule out coming back to DC or meeting me in L.A. or New Orleans for a ball game. I was not to pester her; when she thought she could get away, she’d call—after all, she had a restaurant to run. I sulked as I carried her bag to the security lines. I didn’t like her rules one bit.

We stopped for a goodbye kiss, and she whispered in my ear, “You know, Jack, rules are meant to be broken.”

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

JOHN, LAURA, AND PETE provided me legal advice and emotional support for close to a decade and through my most difficult moments. I will be forever grateful for their legal skills, kindness, and friendship.

Suzy read and edited every draft of this book, and it would not exist without her patience and skill. My children and their spouses offered ideas, suggestions, and encouragement. My Charlotte, DC, and Arkansas friends continue to encourage and support this adventure. This author does not have the words to convey how much I appreciate their unwavering help and friendship.

Terry, Walter, and Caroline read early drafts and acted as sounding boards for sticky health, computer, and legal issues. Jim Frenkel provided sound editorial advice and suggestions.

My deepest thanks and appreciation to Beaufort Books. Publisher Eric Kampmann believed in me and the Jack Patterson series from day one. Managing Editor Megan Trank has been a constant source of support whether it be editing, cover design, publicity, or the hundred other things she does on my behalf. A special thanks to Michael Short for the cover design and Veronica Kelly for her editing expertise.

I continue to be eternally grateful to George and his family.
