Behind The Mirror (The Chronicles of Enhanced Males Book 3)

I try to focus on work, but curiosity is killing me. I get up and go to his office.
- Where’s Bryan? – I ask his secretary, Beth, a pretty blond from the Midwest.
- Mr. Aldridge went home. – she says in a concerned voice. – He’s not feeling well. Should I tell him you were looking for him?
- No need, Beth. Thanks.
She’s still talking when I turn around, but I don’t hear her. I’m thinking about my victory. Is this a victory at all? No. It’s rather a good maneuver, placing me behind the enemy’s back. Victory is still to be won. I have one attempt. One chance. One deciding battle in this war.
***
Bryan’s not at work the next day either. What I did to him has thrown him completely off balance. But I’m not sure it will last. So I call Greg in order to see where we’re standing with the League. He says he hasn’t been able to get a hold of Mancuso. I ask him to try to meet him as soon as possible. We’ve got little time to do something. We need to take advantage of Bryan’s absence, because, when he gets back, I’m afraid I’m toast. Because, at the moment, he’s got no other goal. But to eliminate me from the game.
I still try to look at the situation optimistically. No point in worrying about what will happen tomorrow. I need to seize the moment. So I decide to treat myself, and go shopping for some clothes after work. As I’m browsing through the shoes, someone touches me on the shoulder. I turn around.
- I was wondering if it was you.
- Lulu... What a surprise.
The little dark Venus. Wearing a tight beige suit, with a black wide brim hat on her head.
- I saw you come in, so I wanted to say hello to an old acquaintance. – she says with a smile.
- That’s nice of you. I’m glad you did. – I smile back. – You won’t believe it, but I was just thinking about you today.
- Is that right? You’ve been thinking about me? – she sways seductively towards me.
- I remembered something you told me once. About the moment and how I should use it to the max.
- Nice. I hope you’ve started living in the spirit of the advice?
- I do my best.
- I’ll have to start charging for my consulting services. – her laugher resonates through the store.
- How are you?
- Fine. Seizing the moment.
- How’s Tawnee? – the question puts a more serious expression on Lulu’s face.
- I don’t know. She left a while ago.
- I’m sorry to hear that.
- You shouldn’t be. – she gently touches my cheek. – I’m not.
Her touch causes a tiny earthquake inside me and my legs start to shake. Lulu is the kind of a woman you can never forget. Even if years passed between these accidental encounters, I’m sure she would always shake me up and set me on fire. Just like she did now.
- We could go out for a drink sometime. You and me. – she says.
- Sure.
She then leaves me her phone number and leaves the store.
I think about her the entire way home. Although I want it badly, I’m not going to call her right away. I’ll wait for at least two days.
I see Claire standing by the fence. She waves at me when she sees me.
- Hey, Claire. What’s up?
- Hi, Mark. Um… - she looks flustered. – It seems that my computer broke. Could you perhaps have a look at it? If you know anything about that kind of things?
- Bob’s not home?
- He’s not, otherwise he’d take a look at it. And I need to send my brother some photos. – Of course, I’ll check what the problem might be. Just let me take a shower and grab a bite to eat.
- You can eat at my place. I made pizza. It’s still hot. – she blushes.
I smile.
- Ok, then. I’ll just go take a shower.
The inside of the Kaplans’ house is a mirror image of the layout of my house. It’s only that in their house there’s a wall between the hall and the living room. Claire takes me upstairs. Another difference. Instead of only a bedroom, they also have a study.
- I tried turning it on, but it didn’t work.
I press the power button on the black computer case, but nothing happens.
- I’ll go downstairs and fix us something to drink. – says Claire and walks out of the room.
I hear her steps as she walks downstairs. I try turning on the monitor, but it doesn’t work either. I look behind the computer. Everything seems to be in order. I unplug the computer from the extension cord. The nearest socket is on the wall to the left. I push the case so I could reach it. I plug the power cord into the socket and press the power button, after which the circle around it turns green. The cooler starts humming.
- Claire. Everything is fine. Tell Bob he needs to get a new extension cord. I wonder how you didn’t… Oh…
Claire is standing in the middle of the living room, stark-naked. She flipped her hair back and is biting her lower lip. Her breasts are a bit saggy, but still, she looks provocative. The large areolas are barely visible. In the skin-colored circles, small dark nipples are getting hard. She’s holding her hands between her legs, but when she moves them, she reveals a triangle of trimmed hairs underneath her round stomach. She’s a Venus, too. Somewhat different than Lulu. But still really desirable.
I’m so confused by this sight that I can’t speak, I finally begin to stutter.
- Claire… What’s going on?
She suddenly gets serious and bows her head, as if she’s aware that what she’s doing is a bad idea. I walk up to her slowly.
- I’m sorry, Claire, but… I just… I don’t know what to say…
- Hi, Mark. – I hear Bob’s voice behind my back.
Shit. I can imagine what this must look like. I turn around with an excuse that remains unsaid in my wide open mouth. Bob is standing at the kitchen door, holding a tray with drinks. He looks just like Claire. Wearing his birthday suit.
- I’m glad you came, Mark.
He’s smiling, and although I don’t look directly, I can’t overlook his beer belly and a thick bush of hairs underneath with small genitalia sticking out.
- Is someone going to explain me what the hell is going on? – I ask in a hoarse voice.
Now Bob bows his head, too. He lowers the tray onto the table.
- We thought we could spice things up a bit. – says Claire. – So we invited you over…
- Why me?
- You look so self-confident. – Bob continues – As if you’ve tried everything in life. So we thought…
Now I feel bad, looking at them crestfallen like this. I’m sorry I made them feel ashamed.
- Listen, people. There’s nothing wrong with that. Really. It’s just that… It’s not my thing.
They finally look up and give me faint smiles. I grab their hands.
- You two are all the spice you need. Why throwing someone else in and ruining your relationship?
Before I get the chance to wrap my head around it all, the two of them give me a big hug. Each from one side. What a scene. I’m in a bare-butt-spouses sandwich as I play the role of their marriage counselor.
- Thank you, Mark. – two tears roll down Claire’s face.
- No problem, really. And now… I should get going.
- Why don’t you stay for a drink? – asks Bob.
- Yeah, you should stay for dinner. I hope the pizza didn’t get cold.
- That’s ok, people. I think I’ll just head home. I’ve had a tough day. – they bow their heads again. – No, I wasn’t referring to you.
Bob walks me to the door.
- Mark, um... I hope this can stay between us.
I take a look over his shoulder. Claire is going up the stairs, wrapped in a blanket. She waves at me once again.
- No worries, Bob. No one needs to know about it.
He nods gratefully and closes the door.
Adult movies have convincing examples that most people like threesomes. Reality
is different. Most don't, especially if threesome involves one more person of same sex. Mark didn't like the idea being in bare-butt sandwich with another man. Sex with Claire and another woman would be ok, but Bob? No thanks. But imagine what would happen if Mark agreed to be a spice to their dish? God, what a pair of scatterbrains. Although the situation is hilarious, I can’t laugh. I walk down the path, but instead of making a turn towards my house, I continue walking down the sidewalk. It’s a nice evening. A walk in the fresh air feels good and helps me clear my head.
***
The next day, I see Bryan is back to work. He mostly just stays in his office. Only sometimes do I see him talking to someone in the hall. He looks pensive and absentminded. Have I managed to throw him off the track, at least a bit? I hope have, since Greg says that she won’t be seeing that guy from the League until Monday. I’ve got two more workdays and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Bryan won’t try anything.
After my talk with Greg, I call Lulu. I’ve been thinking about her since yesterday. I can’t pretend to be nonchalant with this fire in my crotch. I want to see her as soon as possible.
- Yes? – I hear her kittenish, cracked voice.
- Hi, Lulu. It’s Mark. We met yesterday. You gave me your number.
- Hey, yeah. Mark, what a pleasant surprise.
- I was wondering if you’re free for a drink tonight?
- I’m not.
- Ah... Ok, tomorrow maybe?
- Hmm... Maybe.
She giggles, and the suspense turns me on even more.
- This maybe, is it maybe yes?
- Well... Maybe.
Her ringing voice echoes in the handset.
- Mark, since you’re a nice guy, I accept your invitation. Wait for me at the Horseshoe at nine tomorrow. You know where it is?
- Yeah, yeah, I know. – I try to sound cool. – Ok, great.
- Good. See ya.
After she hangs up, her voice resonates in my head quite a while.
Some half an hour later, someone comes knocking on my office door. I look up and freeze. Bryan.
He sits across from me without asking.
- Beth says you’ve been looking for me. – his voice is as cold as the icy mask on his face.
- Um.. yeah… - I stutter like a schoolboy. – I did.
- May I know why?
My spine turns into a bar of ice. I start shaking.
- I heard you weren’t feeling well. So I just wanted…
- Since when are you concerned for my health?
I’m quiet.
- Honestly, Mark, why did you come to my office?
- I’ve already told you.
- I can smell bullshit a mile away. Especially if I’ve known someone for so long.
- You’re wrong...
- Or you perhaps came to gloat? Is that it?
- I wanted us to bury the hatchet. The other night… You misunderstood everything. There’s nothing between Valerie and me. I’m sure you didn’t mean what you said.
He gets up, and like a dark shadow, he stands almost as tall as the ceiling. He gives me that reptile smile of his.
- Oh, I meant every word. What did you expect? That you can smooth things over? Save your ass?
- Bryan...
- Listen to me carefully, Mark. I’ll repeat it once again. Try to remember it this time.
He slowly approaches the desk, lays his hands on the desktop and leans towards me. Silently, almost whispering, he hisses.
- You’re finished. I’ll be the end of your career and your life. Not just here. Wherever you go, I’ll find you and destroy you all over again.
He slides his hand across the desk, as if he’s wiping the dust.
- Until there’s nothing left of you, not even dust.
He turns around and gets out. I stay inside, shaking as if I was just pulled out of an ice cube. I shiver so much I lose breath. I’m finished. I’m really, truly finished.
It’s no use in calling Greg. He can’t help me. No one can. I’m on my own. Unable to do anything. I find relief in a bottle of whiskey at home.
The next day, I struggle with a hangover. And desperation. And suspense.
Nothing happens. No one’s calling me in for a meeting. No one is telling me I’ve lost my project. Telling me I’m fired. It seems to me that that’s worse than any possible scenario. This silence. The silence is so deep I can hear the electronics buzzing through the building. I stay in my office. Try to be invisible. It’s safer that way. I feel like, if Bryan saw me in the hall, they’d call me in for a meeting right away, telling me I’ve lost my project and my job. It’s better this way. I’d curl up under the desk if I could. Wait for Monday to come. And this shitty Friday to pass.
***
Friday finally passes somehow, but I’m not relaxed the rest of the day either. Not even in the evening, while I wait for Lulu at the bar. I was so close to calling her and cancelling, but I pulled myself together somehow. It’s no use in getting worked up over things you can’t affect. Besides, Bryan’s threats. How real are they anyway? No… I don’t want to think about him tonight. I’ll think about Lulu. The wonderful moments with her tonight. So I drink my bourbon slowly, sip by sip. I don’t want to get drunk tonight.
Lulu walks into the bar around 9:25. She’s wearing a tight black dress, falling just below the knee. It’s making it hard for her to walk freely, so she’s walking towards me taking one tiny step at a time in her high heels. Like a geisha. The moment I see her, I know I want her. I can smell it from here, that smooth olive skin and dark wavy hair falling over her shoulders.
- Hi, Mark. – her smile is like a string of pearls. – I told you I might come.
- I’m glad. – I kiss her hand.
- You’re so sweet. – she caresses my cheek. – But you don’t have to be so formal.
- I’m not being formal. I’m just treating you like a lady. Which you are.
- Oh, you flatterer.
The evening passes in pleasant conversation and laughter. After a few drinks, Lulu grabs my hand.
- What’s wrong? – she asks me, no longer smiling.
- What… What do you mean? – she confuses me with the question. – Nothing. Everything is fine.
I obviously didn’t feign that smile very well. Lulu comes a bit closer.
- I remember those eyes of yours, the way they were that night. Full of life and joy. Tonight, there’s a shadow hanging over them.
- I must have put too much makeup. – I try to brighten things up.
- Mark. – I didn’t manage to make her smile. – What’s wrong?
- Nothing that can’t be put right. I’d rather not talk about it. – I look down.
- Sorry.
- No need to apologize. – I raise her chin with my hand and smile. – Tonight I want to enjoy myself. With you.
- I like your plan. – she’s smiling again. – Then let me take you to a place. A place where we’ll enjoy ourselves.
- Your place? – I whisper in her ear.
- No. Don’t be impatient. And predictable. Let yourself go and enjoy the surprises.
She takes me by the hand and leads me out of the bar. I pull out a wad of cash in a rush and toss it onto the counter. It’s probably far more than enough to cover the bill, but I don’t care. All I see is Lulu. Her round figure underneath that tight dress. She’s giving me a seductive look over the shoulder.
She pushes me into a parked cab, giggling all the while.
- Take us to Long Island. – she tells the driver.
We leave the city behind us. We’re driving across Long Island. Lulu is caressing my leg and smiling the whole time. I notice we drive past the turn to Greg’s street. We continue going straight ahead. There are fewer and fewer houses along the road. The drive is taking too long. More than half an hour. I’m on pins and nee
dles.
- Will you now tell me where we’re going?
- Again with the impatience. Take it easy.
The entire time, Lulu keeps a smile on her face and her hand on my thigh. She slides her hand up and her pinky touches my erection that’s been there since we got into the cab.
- Take it easy. – she whispers.
Lulu didn’t give the driver the address, but is giving him instructions the whole time.
- Turn left here.
We turn into a grove, and drive uphill from there. On the sides of the steep road are untrimmed hedges and large deciduous trees planted in between them.
After about five minutes, we drive into a clearing. In front of us is a huge house, literally a palace. It was built in the late 19th or the early 20th century. A few cars are already parked in front of the mansion. The cab pulls over in the gravel driveway. The wheels screech.
- There it is. We have arrived. – says Lulu cheerfully.
