  - Maybe you were a bit uptight at the start. But later…

  - Yes?

  - Well, let’s just say that you were good.

  - Just good?

  - More than good. – she kisses me.

  - Go on. I love being praised.

  - I thought you were a bit more modest. – she teases me.

  - Well, I am. But even the modest have sudden outbursts of megalomania.

  - Nicely put.

  - So… What am I like then?

  - Well, you’re nicely built, nothing over the top. And you’re cute, like boy-next-door cute, and I like that.

  - Really?

  - Yes. And you’ve got a cute butt. – She puts her hand on my thigh and moves it towards the crotch.

  - Is that right? – I spread my legs. – What else?

  - You’ve got a gorgeous cock. – she whispers in my ear with her hot breath, which gives me an instant hard-on. – And always ready to play, as far as I can tell.

If the driver looked in the rearview mirror during those couple of minutes, he could see me tilting my head back, one arm on the top of the seat, and the other one on Lulu’s head, which is slowly moving up and down, buried in my crotch. Even if he did, he’s still driving without a word, down the road cutting into the bluish daybreak. There are only a few more hours until dawn. In front of us, the stars from the sky are descending on the earth and are starting to speak in the familiar voice. The voice of New York.

The cab leaves me a few blocks from home. Lulu asks the driver to wait for her and she steps outside the car with me.

  - I had a really great time tonight. – she puts her hands on my shoulders.

  - Yeah, me, too.

  - I’d like us to do this again sometime.

  - Why not.

  - When?

  - Take it easy. Enjoy the moment while it lasts.

  - You’re a quick learner. – she smiles.

She leans towards me. Her lips feel like silk on mine.

  - Talk to you later, sweetheart. – she caresses my cheek and gets back into the car.

I watch the cab and a bag flying out of its window as it drives off, with the bag dropping next to the sidewalk. I walk home along the empty street. The rosy dawn is resonating with distant sirens. That’s the only sound I hear. This moment, right before the dawn, before everyone wakes up, it is the quietest part of the day. You have the feeling that you are alone in the world.

  ***

The sunlight wakes me up half an hour before noon. The glass is reflecting the beams straight into my eyes. I pull the covers over my head, but it’s no use, I’m already awake.

I go to the kitchen in my underwear. Hell, it’s Saturday, I’m not getting dressed today at all. As I drink my coffee, I remember the details from last night. I’d never guess Bryan was into that kind of stuff. But then again, he’s the kind of a person who walks the line in everything. He walks it skillfully, pushing into the abyss everyone who gets in his way.

That’s why it’s not that surprising that I caught the sadistic bastard in the middle of an orgy with the poor, submissive Matt Dobkins. Somehow, it all makes sense.

The question is, what is Bryan going to do about my threat? Run away with his tail between his legs or fight back even harder? I don’t know the answer to that question. But I know that I may not step back, not an inch, whatever happens. No way. There’s too much at stake. In fact, everything is at stake. But I don’t want to think about it.

I don’t want to spoil this wonderful day.

Around 3 p.m., I hear someone knocking on the door. I look through the peephole and I go numb. Bryan. He’s got a strange look on his face, torn between laughing and crying. He looks creepy.

He bangs on the door fiercely, making me step back instantly.

  - Open up, Mark.

  Three bangs.

  - I know you’re in there. Open up.

  - What do you want, Bryan?

  - I want to talk. About… last night.

  - We have nothing to talk about.

  - Yes, we do. It can’t end like that.

  - It’s already over. Deal with it, Bryan.

  - No. You can’t do that to me.

  - I can. And I will.

  - Do you know who I am? Do you know what I can do to you?

  - I do know. Nothing. You’re not in the position to do anything anymore.

  - I’ll…

I hear his muffled breath on the other side of the door.

  - You’ll do what, Bryan?

  - I’ll... You...

  - Let me clear things up for you. Last night I gave you the instructions, Bryan. If you don’t do what I said… - I make a dramatic pause – I’ll destroy you.

  - Mark...

  - I’ll throw your life into the toilet and flush it. Just like that. Without a moment of hesitation.

There’s no sound on the other side.

  - Now get off my property, before I call the cops.

I watch Bryan through the peephole, as he walks away, stumbling. Somewhere in the middle of the path, he turns around once again, clenches his fists, his face all red. He’s grinding his teeth, moving his jaw left and right, so he looks as if he’s talking to himself. He turns his back to me again, gets into his Lexus and disappears with tires screeching.

  Fuck. That was close.

The rest of the day and the entire Sunday I’m on pins and needles, expecting Bryan to show up again. But luckily, he fails my expectations.

When I get to work on Monday, the first thing I see is Ned, the janitor, peeling Bryan’s name off the door to his office. Inside, Beth is filling cardboard boxes with his stuff.

  - What’s going on? – I ask.

Beth turns around and her lips distort into a sad grimace.

  - He called Angela to tell her he’s not working here anymore. That’s all I know.

The expediency of capitalism. The corpse of your career in the company hasn’t cooled yet, and they’re already peeling your name off the door. Luckily, it’s not mine.

I continue walking towards my office. I meet Angela along the way.

  - You’ve heard about Bryan? – she asks me with a serious expression on her face.

  - Beth told me he’s not working here anymore.

  - Yes. Health problems.

  - What kind of health problems?

  - I don’t know. He didn’t say. He just said that he’s leaving town and that he won’t be working for us anymore.

  - Really?

  She nods.

  - To be honest, we gave him the spotlight. And he just left us hanging like this. – she sighs. – Mark, I think you’ll have to take over some of his duties, at least until we find someone to take his place.

  - Mm, yeah… No problem.

My phone starts ringing. It’s Greg.

  - Sorry, Angela. I have to take this.

She pats me on the hand and walks into her office.

  - Greg. How are you?

  - I’m fine, Mark. – he takes a deep breath.

  - What’s wrong?

  - I’m afraid I haven’t got any good news. Mancuso rescheduled, we’re meeting on Wednesday. And I know how important it was for you that I meet him today. I tried everything, but I’m afraid Wednesday was the best I could do.

  - Greg, don’t worry. We won.

  - I don’t get it. – he stutters confusedly – How?

  - Walk-off home run, Greg. We don’t even have to run the bases.

  - I still don’t understand.

  - Bryan’s out. I’ll tell you about it when I see you.

My next stop is the third office down the hall.

  - Hi, Annette. Could you tell your boss I’m here?

  - Sure. – she picks up the handset – Mr. Dobkins, Mr. Davison is looking for you.

I don’t wait for him to let me in, but I walk into the office.

  - M..Mark... – Matt stutters.

  - Hello, Dobkins. I didn’t expect to see you at work today. You look kind of pa
le. Are you sick?

  - Mark... Please...

  - Please, don’t tell anyone? Is that what you wanted to say, Matt?

He nods, pressing his lips together tight. I close the blinds on the office door.

  - Well, that’s completely up to you.

  - Tell me what you want, Mark.

  - Take it easy. Don’t be impatient.

  I approach the desk.

  - To begin with, you’ll be at my disposal. Whenever I want. Whatever I need. Got it?

He nods again, looking at the floor.

  - So, Matt, that means that from now on, you’re my personal bitch. For everything I might need. And make sure you’re available when I need you.

I walk towards the door. I turn around once again before I go out.

  - I won’t be spanking your ass like your close friend Bryan used to do. Although I know you like it. Bye, Matt.

In front of my office, Angela is waiting for me with a surprise. My old team is standing beside her. Prodigal sons. While Lydia and Fran avoid eye contact, Eric is smiling too widely, as if nothing’s happened.

  - Hello, Mark. – he says, filled with cheerfulness that gives me rash.

  - What’s this? – I ask Angela.

  - Your team. You can have them back.

  - I don’t need them.

  - What? – I interrupt Angela in the middle of her smile.

  - I said I don’t need them. You can have them working on other projects. I’ve already got my team. My Geek Squad.

I wink at Lora as I say that. She smiles, as happy as I am that the justice has been served in the best possible way.

A few minutes later, she walks into the office, with an odd smile on her face. As if she did something wrong.

  - Hey, Laura. Does anyone need me?

  - Actually, I do. I need you. I owe you an apology, Mark.

  I’m quiet because I don’t understand a thing.

  - Lately, I’ve been acting… a bit awkward. You’ve probably noticed that.

  - I don’t understand.

  - About the two of us. – luckily, I’m sitting, because my knees go weak when I hear this. – We went out, and I started avoiding you afterwards. That is, that’s what it looked like to you, right?

I don’t know what to say, so I just nod silently.

  - The reason is that, someone’s recently appeared in my life, who’s occupied all my time and my mind.

My heart sinks. I don’t have to know all the details.

  - My sister. – the words bring me back to life like a cold shower. – She came her to look for work. From my apartment, obviously.

  Laura sighs and shrugs.

  - The little princess. My parents have always treated her like that, and expected me to simply adjust to that. I have always been the one who needs little to be happy. While Selena… She needs everything served on a golden platter.

She spreads her hands as she says this, as if she’s trying to show how vulnerable and helpless she is. She’s wonderful.

  - So, these days, I’ve dedicated all my time to her and had no time for myself and my needs. She has now found some guys to live with, so she doesn’t need me anymore.

She tries to smile, but she doesn’t really pull it off. I find it adorable, so I smile in order to cheer her up.

  - Anyway, Mark, let me cut to the chase… I was wondering if that invitation to go out still stands?

  - How about tonight? – I say without thinking.

  - Wow! – she smiles cordially. – I didn’t expect such a quick response.

  - Neither have I. – I smile as well.

  - What about that rule of yours, about evening dates with colleagues? – the old Laura peeks out of her seductive half-smile.

  - Rules are there to be broken.

  - I like that. What do you say I wait for you at Wechler’s at 8? And we’ll take it from there…

  - It’s a deal. See you at 8.

I feel like a million ants are running across my crotch when Laura turns around at the door once again and looks at me.

  ***

I’m on pins and needles the whole afternoon. I can’t wait to see Laura. Have I opened the door? I don’t know yet. But I’m holding the knob tight in my hand.

Then someone rings the doorbell. I go downstairs and open the door. My pulse races. It’s Valerie.

  - Hello, Mark. May I come in?

  - Sure… Go ahead. What brings you here?

I lead her into the living room. She looks around for a moment and sits on the couch.

  - I came to say goodbye, Mark. I’m leaving for Austin. I have a flight in the morning. They offered me a job there.

  - And Bryan? What about him?

  - We broke up. – she bows her head.

I wonder if she somehow found out about the stuff he’s into.

  - Things haven’t been working between us for a while. The understanding, the passion, it somehow wasn’t there. – she didn’t, I think to myself.

I pour us a drink. She gives me a faint smile, takes a sip, and goes on.

  - I don’t even know how we got engaged in the first place, I guess I wasn’t thinking. But I realized the things got serious and that I had to do something about it. As soon as possible. – she sighs.

  - What did Bryan have to say about that?

  - Surprisingly, not much. It was as if he wanted the same thing. I expected an argument… - she looks at me with tears in her eyes, but also a smile on her face. – But he made it easier for me in a way.

  - What do you mean?

  - He packed his things and left. I don’t know where. I expected him to fight for me. But Bryan was never the one.

She comes closer and caresses my cheek.

  - How could I’ve been so stupid? The whole time, it was you, Mark. The perfect one, but like every other woman, I need to check what’s waiting for me on the next floor, if there’s someone even more perfect than you up there. I hope you can forgive me?

She told me this joke a long time ago, about a department store, with ideal men offered at five floors, but women continue to go up, until they get to the last, sixth floor, where there are no men, but just a message to women, telling them that, no matter what, they will never be satisfied with what they’ve got.

I try to smile, but my lips just go sour.

Valerie then comes closer and kisses me. I feel her lips on mine, like warm, wet silk. Her breath is sweet and aromatic.

  - Wow... – I exhale when we stop.

In response, her lips come closer to mine again. But I stop her.

  - Valerie... Stop. I can’t.

  - Why? I thought that you… - she looks at me in surprise.

  - Not anymore.

Valerie getting back to him is all Mark ever wanted and dreamed about. And now she's here, with her soft lips and warm body within a grasp, just like before. Mark has an opportunity to start over with Valerie, but instead he just rejected her. Did he make a good decision?   Now I caress her cheek. Her skin isn’t as warm as it used to be.

  - Ok, then. – she stands up, looking a bit offended. – I think I should leave.

  - Where are you going now? You told me you have a flight in the morning.

  - I booked two tickets. One for tonight, and one for tomorrow morning. Just in case.

She stops at the door once again, smiling sadly.

  - Goodbye, Mark.

I watch her get into the cab. She drives off into the sunset, down the street where the neighbors’ kids are playing.

  - Neill! – I hear the voice of some woman from the neighborhood. – Get inside. It’s past eight.

  Fuck!

I run upstairs and get the phone. Two missed calls. Laura. I’m such an idiot. I call her, but she doesn’t answer. I get dressed in a hurry. I hope I’ll find her.

As I walk downstairs, I try to reach her again. Then I hear a tune in fr
ont of my door. Someone’s phone is ringing.

  I open the door.

  - Laura!

  - You’re such a jerk…

I pull her in and interrupt her with a kiss.

  - I’m sorry. – I say once we manage to catch our breaths. – It just happened that…

Now she interrupts me with a kiss.

  - No need for excuses. – she whispers.

We wrestle with our clothes and each other as we go upstairs. We stumble, and fall, and laugh. Finally, we end up in the bed, with our naked bodies intertwined. I’ve imagined Laura so many times, but I could never imagine it would be this good. We laugh all the while, as we kiss, nibble, and caress each other. Her every move tells me she’s wanted this for a long time. Just like I did.

We make love with all our strength, with every atom of our bodies, like there’s no tomorrow.

I watch Laura moan quietly. She tilts her head as she does it, and stretches her neck, making dimples appear above her clavicles. She licks her lips as he softly slides her nails down my shoulder blades. Her beautiful breasts quiver in the rhythm of our movement. Tiny drops of sweat shine around her navel, just above the trimmed hair above her pussy which I enter gently, circling my hips, intensifying the rhythm from time to time.
