Believe in You

If you only learn one thing from reading this book, I hope it’s how to respect yourself and keep your standards high and healthy. For me, respecting myself and learning when to walk away from someone who doesn’t respect or value me have been two things I struggle with most in life. Getting over that and learning how to stand up for what is right and what I deserve in life have been so powerful for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I’d ignored those lessons, so I hope you guys all get a good grip on your self-respect as you head out into the world. Know that your best is enough, you don’t owe anyone your love and affection, and it’s okay to stick up for yourself when nobody else is. Love you guys.
Amy

We hope that as you close this book, you will start reading another! Reading has opened our minds drastically. The more I read, the more I’m curious about human behavior and the motivations behind our actions. Here are some topics I suggest you look into:
•vulnerability and shame (Brené Brown is good for this)
•birth order psychology
•personality types (I have read so many different books with different theories on personality types that it’s ridiculous; I find Enneagram and Myers–Briggs to be the most interesting currently)
•marriage and relationships (especially books written by therapists, because you get an inside look at hundreds of couples)
•psychology of family relationships and behaviors
•psychology of stress and taking care of your emotional, mental, and physical health
Whatever topics you choose, keep reading. Look for solutions, insights, and new ideas and resources. I know making it a habit has changed my life for the better!

When Christina started reading psychology books, she would share with Lisa and me what she was learning, and we would talk for hours and hours about it.
I started looking into it myself in my late teens. I would go to the bookstore near our college with Christina and Lisa after classes and read psychology books, and some of the things we learned changed our lives. Some of my favorites were:
•Conscious Loving by Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks
•What You Feel, You Can Heal by John Gray
•Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions by James Pennebaker
•Boundaries by Henry Cloud and John Townsend1
There are so many resources out there as you get to know yourself and believe in yourself. Books like these can help you keep going strong on your journey!
