Chained to the Devil

“What is it, Mother?”
“Hija,” she says softly. “There is someone here to see you.”
Slowly, she moves aside, and I see him.
It’s like a punch to the chest.
Anton is standing in my doorway.
“Hey, Peaches.”
There goes my heart.
Someone please pick up the pieces.
I swallow hard and try to breathe, but my breath doesn’t come. My mother moves out of sight as the man who is technically still my husband approaches me. I would run, but I’m already backed into a corner. Like a frightened animal, I begin to panic.
“Get—get away from me!” I squeal.
“I’m sorry, Mia.”
“Oh, I bet you are!” I shout.
“Can we do this outside?” he asks. “Your brother is sleeping.”
“How—how do you know my brother is sleeping?” I want to argue with him, but he’s right. My brother goes to bed earlier than my mother and I. He moves closer and offers his hand, but I step out of the way and move past him to the door.
Once outside, I can almost breathe again. He closes the door behind me, and I unleash on him. “Three weeks! Three weeks and not a word!”
“I had things I had to attend to.”
“Things you had to attend to!?” I blurt out. “More whores to fuck?”
“Mia, please.” He comes toward me, but I lash out, slapping his hand away as though I could actually hurt him. The memory of the blow he gave me flares in my memory, and it’s like I’m back on my knees, sobbing in the street again.
“I’m so sorry,” he says, genuine emotion in his voice. “Charlie…he saw my weakness and he came at me.”
“Your weakness?”
“You, Mia. He knew I cared about you, and he made a move. What I did…it was the only way I could convince him that I didn’t love you. The only way I could keep you safe.”
“Bullshit!” I lash out. “If that was true, why didn’t you just come apologize!? Why didn’t you let me back into the house?”
“His men were following me,” he explains. For the first time, I can hear his voice falter. He moves closer. I let him. “I knew if I brought you back into my life, he would see through me. He would make a move on you, and it would be over. I couldn’t risk you, Mia. You’re the most important thing in my life.”
“Not as important as your criminal empire,” I spit back. “That’s what’s really important to you, isn’t it?”
“Not anymore.”
He reaches out with blinding speed and takes hold of my shoulders. I try to fight him off, but he’s simply too strong. He pulls me close and presses his forehead to mine as tears begin to flow from my eyes.
Our lips almost touch. I want to kiss him, but I also want to bite him too. I want him to hug me, but I want to smash my fists against him until my bones break.
“What…what are you talking about, Anton?”
“I’m out,” he says. “I gave it up. My father is back in control. I’m no longer part of the family business.”
Anton’s words strike me like a giant’s fist. I’m reeling, as though gravity itself has ceased to function. But I’m also wary. This could all be another trick. I want to believe—with all my heart I want to believe that the man holding me in his arms is a man I can trust. That the man I love is true and loves me as much as I still love him.
And that realization hurts me the most.
I still love him…
“Anton…” I whimper. “Don’t lie to me.”
“I never lie to you, Peaches. There is a plane standing by. I can take you, your mother, and your brother now. We will leave and never return. I will let my father decide what to do with the empire now.”
“But what about your brother, Anton? You said if he—”
“He will not be part of it either,” he says. “My father will find a new heir.”
I can’t speak. What is there to say?
Happiness and sadness grip me, mix through me like electric waves, seizing my body and paralyzing me. This is all too much to handle. I feel as though I’ve been stretched as far as a human being can be stretched.
His strong chest presses against me. His scent fills my nostrils. The warmth from his breath makes me feel like I’m at home again.
Home…where I’m supposed to be.
“I love you, Mia.”
He takes my hand and lifts it, examining the finger where my ring used to be. My heart sinks. “I’m sorry, Anton. I-I threw it away. I…”
“It is okay, Peaches,” he says. “It was cheap ring anyway. I brought you a new one. A much nicer one. Look.”
He produces a small jewelry box from his pocket. Inside is a beautiful silver ring with a flawless, sparkling diamond. Beside it is a wedding band. He slides the diamond band onto my finger first. Tears pour from my eyes onto the back of my hand. The wedding band is next, and I watch as he fits a matching one to his hand.
“You are mine, Mia, and I am yours. And I am sorry for leaving you. It will never happen again.”
It’s all too much. I begin to bawl. Tears of happiness flood down my face. “God, I love you too, Anton!”
My heart bursts with joy, and I throw myself into his arms. He catches me with ease and holds me there. I don’t know for how long, but I know that I could stay there forever with the man I will spend the rest of my life with. The man who gave it all up for me.
Epilogue
Anton
Five years later…
I never saw myself as anything other than a mobster. But Mia cured me of that. She made me into something more.
A good man.
An angel for the devil. How poetic.
I stand on the porch of our house and look out at the fields of wheat and corn swaying beneath the falling evening light. The silhouettes of my family and extended family moving make me smile. I see Mia, my love, my heart my soul, Mateo, her brother, and Maria, her mother. And as they get closer, I see Leonid, our son in her arms.
Every day is a miracle with my family. After growing up in a criminal empire, I never understood what a true family could be—what true happiness could mean.
I left the empire behind and never looked back. I put the word out to my rivals that I was out of the game and made sure there was no doubt in anybody’s minds. Anton Todorov was done.
I took my wealth and moved far, far away. I bought acres of land, real estate, and took some of my most loyal men with me for protection, just in case some of my enemies got it in their heads to come after me. So far, no one has been so stupid. There’s no reason to challenge me now. Nothing to gain by it. And I have no reason to go back.
I have my love. I have my family.
I have my newborn son.
I have everything I need.
The light from inside hits Mia’s face as she emerges from the fields onto the grass. Her angelic smile warms my heart as it always does, and my son’s happy face is a blessing. When he first came into the world, I realized there was more to life than darkness and struggle. A lesson my father never imparted to me. And I swore to spend the rest of my life building a relationship with him that I never had with mine.
Mia never knew her father, so my relationship with Leonid is important to her. Every day that I’ve watched him grow has been magic. From Mia’s pregnancy to his birth. I never felt more like a man than the moment I held him in my arms.
“Look what we created,” Mia whispered to me in the hospital that day. “Isn’t he amazing?”
My family is all that matters now.
My wife and my son.
Mia, the light of my life. I wake up with her on my mind and go to sleep with her in my thoughts. She occupies my dreams and my every waking moment. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Did you make us some dinner, Daddy?” Mia jokes as she walks up the steps to me and passes me my son. Her mother has some kind of roast that’s been simmering for the past three hours.
“
I’ve got an appetizer for you,” I whisper. “If you have time.”
“Well, this little man is tuckered out. Gimme five minutes to put him to bed?”
“I’ll be waiting,” I reply, reaching under her dress to touch her in a way that her mother and brother cannot see. She flashes her eyes at me before heading off to Leonid’s room.
“Dinner will be ready soon,” Maria tells me. “Have you set the table?”
“Yeah, Mateo,” I grin. “Have you?”
Mateo jokingly hangs his head. “I’m on it.”
“Good boy,” I laugh, giving him a nudge on the shoulder as he passes by. Mateo is halfway through high school now, and I’m looking out for him to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble. I’m not quite a father figure, not quite an older brother, but something of a mixture between the two. Whatever it is, it works.
Leaving them to finish prepping dinner, I head upstairs to the bedroom to find my wife already waiting for me. She’s stripped out of her clothes and is wearing nothing but a pair of red panties that I’ve never seen before.
“When did you buy those?” I ask.
“A girl’s gotta have some surprises.” She winks, crossing her legs as she leans back on the bed. “Now, didn’t you say you had something for me before dinner?”
As I always do, I marvel at her sensuality. Our sex life is beyond compare. My wife is nothing but a little slut for me and me alone. We drive each other crazy. We do everything—we do it all. And I love pleasing her.
My cock begins to harden as I approach. She twists seductively, reaching up and pinching her nipples to entice me. I snatch her knees and spread her legs wide open. There’s a spot on her panties; she’s already wet.
“How long have you been thinking about me?” I ask.
“Since we began our walk,” she whimpers. “I’ve been wanting you all afternoon, Daddy. Don’t make me beg.”
“Get down on your knees,” I tell her.
Instantly she complies. Her thighs spread, she tugs my pants down and pulls out my cock, moaning with arousal as she does. I groan as she slips it between her lips and growl as she deepthroats the entire thing—a skill she learned a year into our relationship.
“Fuck, you sexy little bitch.” She loves it when I call her that. Her hand cups my balls, already taut and brimming with cum. She starts to move, fucking my cock with her throat, and I have to instantly pull back. “You trying to make me come already?”
“Well, we don’t have much time before dinner, Daddy.”
She’s teasing. She wants my cock in her. We both know it. I snatch her by the legs and throw her onto the bed beneath me, pinning her knees up by her head. I don’t even bother taking her panties off; I just pull them aside to reveal her pink slit, the little piece of heaven that drives me crazy.
“I want to get you pregnant again,” I tell her. “I want to shoot my seed inside you, Mia. Do you want to give me another child?”
“Anton,” she whispers. “I…yes. Fuck, yes!”
Her hands grip my waist as I drive my cock deep inside her without hesitation. Her body bucks as I bottom out and begin pumping. The bed shakes as I fuck her without restraint, with passion, with love.
This is what it’s all about.
Our lips meet, and I feel her clench down around me.
“I love you, Peaches.”
“I love you, Anton.”
