A Bride's Dilemma

Melissa snorted softly. “I wasn’t traumatized. It didn’t take me long to shake the guilt of being the reason Duncan had for taking Jonah’s life.”

Knox’s voice was low and quiet when he said, “Jonah didn’t deserve to die like that, though.”

Melissa glanced at him, shaking her head. “No. He didn’t. It’s a shame. Just because he was being a scoundrel to me and gambling too much wasn’t a good enough reason to take his life.”

“Duncan won’t have long to think about it,” Knox remarked. “He’ll be heading to the gallows by the end of the year.”

“I’m surprised they’ve waited this long.” Melissa thought about the crazy man. He’d been sent to an asylum for a spell, but they had determined that he was too dangerous and could snap and kill someone else at any moment. He would be hung in September, according to the latest news Knox heard from the city where Duncan was being held.

  “Melissa.”

She rested her eyes on his handsome face, her heart speeding up a bit when he met her gaze.

“I want to ask you something.”

Melissa’s instincts kicked in, and a wash of tingles spread over her skin. She sucked in a sharp breath and stared at him. “Okay.”

“We’re courting. And as you know, courting typically leads to one thing. It occurred to me this morning that I haven’t asked you for that one thing, though.”

Melissa struggled not to laugh. He didn’t have to ask. She knew what he wanted. But it would be nice to hear the words. So she raised her eyebrows. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Make yourself clear, please, sir.”

He grinned and chuckled. “I want you to be my wife. Melissa, will you marry me?”

Tingles lifted the hairs on her arms and the back of her neck. “Marry a sheriff?” She made the question sound like the answer would be no. He wasn’t fooled, though, and pursed his lips at her. She laughed, pushed her ice cream away, and threw her arms around his neck.

“Of course I’ll marry you, Sheriff. It is my dream come true.”

She joined his laughter, her heart filled with joy, when he said, “Okay, but how about you start calling me Robert. I don’t think sheriff will be appropriate now, do you?”
