  “When am I ever not serious?” Comet scoffed, walking her in through the open doors.

  Rina covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes wide as she took it all in. The warehouse was already stocked with high shelves running the entire length of it, and Rina could smell fresh paint. It had to have been just built. Nestled in the middle of the woods, tucked away in the shadow of Sleeping Dragon Hill, it was private but still close enough to Shifter Grove and the airport to be functional.

  “You built this for me?” Rina asked.

  “I had it built for you,” Comet said, blushing slightly. “I figured we needed more reasons to come to Shifter Grove since this is where it all began. I was thinking maybe we could get a house or something… I know your work takes you all over the place and mine does as well, but maybe this could be the home base?”

  Rina felt tears welling in her eyes as she turned to look at Comet. Things between them had been so astoundingly perfect that she couldn’t even remember a time when they hadn’t been together. All the old wounds had begun to close up and they had been meeting one another whenever they could, flying across the country for stolen evenings and rushed nights.

  It felt sort of dirty and a little bit forbidden, and Rina loved every second of it.

  But now… Now he was hinting at something even bigger. The fact that this time, the thought of being ‘tied down’ by someone made her feel nothing but joy did not escape Rina.

  The difference the right man can make!

  “I’d like that,” she choked out.

  “Good,” Comet said, dropping to one knee and fishing around in one pocket.

  Rina practically squealed when he pulled out a little velvet box and popped it open, showing a gorgeous diamond engagement ring surrounded with tiny sapphires and rubies.

  “I figured it was fitting… what with the whole Fourth of July thing,” Comet said sheepishly before clearing his voice. “Rina Reynolds, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, to have and to hold in all my misguided decisions? Pretty please?”

  Comet batted his lashes at her and Rina knelt right beside him, laughing as she threw her arms around his neck.

  “Of course I will,” she said, kissing him all over. “And I’d love to live here! Well… for the two months or so a year that we have time to be together.”

  “Hey, hey,” Comet said sternly, pulling her to sit on one of his knees. “We will solemnly swear to make it at least three, you hear me, missy? I won’t take no for an answer.”

  Comet slipped the ring on her finger and it fit perfectly. Rina grinned, nodding.

  It was the kind of compromise she was more than willing to make.

  Who would have thought that the craziest day of the year would bring her the greatest joy she’d ever known after almost a decade of heartache? Rina was sure that Fourth of July would be her favorite holiday of all time, and there wasn’t anything that could change that.

  Well, maybe only a Christmas wedding…

  “Karen! Over here!”

  A mountain of a man cut through the sea of people with ease and enveloped her in a huge warm hug. It was both comfortable and electrifying, and she found herself leaning into him maybe more than would be entirely appropriate for a first meeting. Evan released her and grabbed her suitcase with such ease, she started worrying she had packed nothing but air in her anxiousness to get on the plane.

  “Let’s get out of here,” he said with a wink as he grabbed her hand and led her to the exit.

  Karen was stunned. She hadn’t had time to properly react. Did she even get a “hi” out? Looking down at his hand, she figured that it didn’t really matter. Obviously they were acquainted enough.

  Finally, they made it outside, stopping by a shiny red truck. Evan threw her suitcase in the back and turned to face her.

  “How was your flight? You’ll probably want to get to the bed and breakfast, freshen up.”

  Karen knew she was supposed to say something, but the only thing going through her mind was holy shit! Evan’s hazel eyes practically glimmered in the sunlight, his full lips baring a dazzling, dangerous smile. His white t-shirt clung to his muscles in a way that could be considered obscene. Karen reminded herself it’s not polite to drool and tried to pull herself together.

  “We experienced some turbulence, but I managed. Let’s go see the accommodations, then.”

  Karen’s inner voice was all but screaming at her.

  What the hell was that? Why are you talking like a robot? And for god’s sakes, close your mouth!

  Evan just smiled and held the passenger door open for her.
