  Dedication

So, I am getting to the point that I don’t have many people to dedicate these to anymore. But, I think I have this one in the bag.

See, I started writing this when I was pregnant with Harley, my youngest child. I was inspired to start it by 50 Shades of Grey. That was in 2012. It’s been a roller coaster of a ride since then to get this where it needs to be, for you my loyal readers.

This book is dedicated to anyone who has ever read a book and thought, I can write that better.

To everyone who told me I couldn’t throughout my life.

And to my kids. Even though you may be pains in the ass, I wouldn’t have had the drive to finish this without you. I love you, Kiddos.

  Thank you.

  Prologue

  Daniel

God, I couldn’t wait to get back to Portland. I’d spent too long in Alaska. Too many awful things had taken place, and I just needed to go home. Between Natalie and Alexa, my soul was a mess. More so than my heart was. I should have paid attention to Dad. He’d told me buying this home wasn’t a great idea.

But, I hadn’t paid attention. I wanted to make certain I had an escape from Portland, in case I needed to get away for whatever reason. And when that event occurred, I met Alexa. And when Alexa broke her word, I became broken. I have a long story to tell and I choose to share it with you. It all starts three months before today… when Natalie betrayed me.

I’d believed Natalie about everything she told me when I questioned her. Confronted her about the stories my buddies were telling me about her and some guy she was constantly with when I was out of town. Of course, all she constantly told me was he was a close friend she would hang out with.

  I trusted her.

Until I showed up early one time from a company trip...

  Chapter One

  Daniel

  Three months earlier

I’d completed my work in Anchorage several days early, and I wanted to go back to Portland. I’d been fortunate enough to catch an early flight and I wanted to surprise Natalie. Take her out to dinner, champagne and candlelight, then go back to our house and ravage her all night. In the morning, I’d put the box on top of the whipped cream on her pancakes, and ask her to be mine now and forever.

It was the ideal plan, but first I wanted to take a shower and change out of my travel clothes.

I was shocked to discover her car parked in the driveway, typically she was out shopping or at the spa this early in the afternoon. There was another vehicle too. I was curious if she had one of her girlfriends over instead or her friend she had told me about. The guy who would spend time with her and make certain she remained safe while I was out of town. This was fucking awesome! Not only was she home ahead of time, but I could acknowledge this guy for taking care of Natalie while I was traveling. I stepped into the house and dropped my suitcase on the floor.

Hearing them upstairs, their moaning and grunting as the mattress creaked. I climbed the steps noiselessly, praying she was watching pornography. Then I caught sight of them, Natalie riding the bastard’s cock, her long brown hair spilling down her back, head flung back in ecstasy.

The other man guided her hips, prompting her to ride him rougher, as he caught her breast in his mouth and sucked long and hard she screamed his name as she came, riding his cock harder as she rode her orgasm out.

I knew all the buttons Sean was pushing as I started to retreat down the staircase. I didn’t want them to know I was here yet. I knew every move they would make. I had been that man not too long ago. Except now I wasn’t that man. And it made my blood boil.

I stopped and waited to announce my presence.

I knew as I heard the hard slaps and loud grunts from Sean that he was about to cum. Natalie screamed again, whimpering as Sean slammed into her, before stilling. I had a front row seat to the end of my own personal porn, and they didn’t even know they were being watched.

I cleared my throat, walking into the room. They both stared at me.

“Daniel, what are you doing here?” Natalie gasped.

“Apparently, watching you fuck another man,” I said, trying to keep my cool, barely able to stop myself from beating the fucking asshole into a pulp. He even had the balls to be smirking at me!

“It isn’t what it loo—” Natalie tried to explain herself as she stumbled out of the bed, tripping over the sheet.

“Don’t tell me it isn’t what it looks like dammit!” I interrupted her, I was aggravated and I didn’t want to hear it. “I know what it looks like, and it looks pretty fucking bad from my angle. I want you gone. You and all your shit. Get. The. Fuck. Out. There’s nothing more to say Nat. Take him and go.” I needed a fucking drink. I stormed from the room and into the kitchen. I opened the fridge and dug around looking for my bottle of whiskey. I looked at the bottle. It was mostly gone.

“Daniel, wait. Let me explain.” Natalie pleaded. “Don’t be rash about this.”

“What the fuck do you expect me to be, Natalie? Calm? Collected?” I laughed, she honestly thought she could talk her way out of this.

“There’s nothing to explain. I fucking saw you! Don’t you get it? I watched as he fucked you like the whore you are.” I punched the wall, so I wouldn’t punch Natalie. I was starting to lose my grip on my temper the longer she stayed in front of me. “Don’t you see? There’s nothing you can say to change what I saw. Nothing. Now get out of my fucking house. You can get the rest of your shit when I get back.” I pointed at the door and waited for them to leave. He smirked at me again. He was fucking lucky I didn’t kick his ass then.

“Thanks for the pussy, dude.” Sean shut the door.

I lost it then. I took the bottle in my hand and chucked it across the room, shattering it as it hit the wall. I couldn’t believe I had been so fucking stupid. I had fucking believed that bitch when she told me she wasn’t fucking around. I needed to get the fuck out of Portland for a bit. But first I needed to call Paul and let him know I was going out of town again. And why.

I was on a plane back to Alaska within a few hours. That was the great thing about winter. There were always flights. I was going to go out to my new house and clear my head. I thought that the cool mountain air would do my head some good, and help me get over some of my anger from what had happened with Natalie.

When I had called Paul and told him what had happened, he gave me the rest of the week off, knowing exactly what I was going through having dealt with it earlier in the year. Paul wasn’t just my boss. He was like an uncle to me. The only annoying thing was that he wanted me back in Portland by Monday for the groundbreaking on our new hotel. The life of a hotel mogul’s son never slowed down.

I was the team leader, and even though I had done everything they needed me to, they still wanted me there to make sure that someone didn’t fuck up my pet project. Dad had finally let me have my own contract after proving I knew the business better than him.

I was already beat when I landed back in Anchorage from everything that I had dealt with today. All I wanted to do was to get my car,
check into the hotel, eat something, and get some fucking sleep before the six-hour drive to the house. Honestly, it would have been easier for me just fly to Fairbanks. It was closer than Anchorage, but I wanted one more night in the city before I subjected myself to total solitude in the heart of the Alaska wilderness.

I had called ahead to make sure the Captain Cook still had my room available to me and was thrilled they did. I pulled up on the street and parked taking a deep breath. I had to reassure myself I was ready to do this. To go off into the wilderness of Alaska when the weather could change instantaneously. Yes, I was ready to go out there. In fact, at this point, I was sure I needed to for my sanity before I could handle going back to my home in Portland next week.

I needed to get the whore out of my head. To forget I ever thought I loved Natalie. I was lost in thought walking up the sidewalk when a gorgeous red-head almost ran me over. I stepped out of her way as she stopped in front of me, out of breath.

"Are you Daniel Black. You match the description John gave me."

"I am. But who are you?" She was beautiful. Long legs covered in black jeans, fur-topped boots, a light winter jacket with a cream turtleneck peeking out from under it, and what looked like well-worn leather gloves. Long, flyaway auburn hair, poking out from under the hood of her jacket. Her emerald green eyes felt like they were staring into my soul, and the soft dusting of freckles across her face was mind-blowing.

Her lovely, full lips looked completely and totally kissable. Just slightly parted, as she worked to catch her breath, licking them nervously. God, the places I would love to have those lips. Goddammit, I had just left a relationship, what the fuck was I thinking wanting to walk into another one with her? I wasn’t the guy that wanted anything with tits.

"I'm Alexa Jones. The housekeeper you requested?” She held her hand out to me and I took it. I was right, worn leather. As soon as our hands touched, even through the material, we pulled our arms apart as though we had been bitten by snakes. That was one helluva spark.

“John said you called and wanted someone to watch the house while you were gone. He told me I might be able to catch you before you checked in. I wanted to talk with you about what is expected at the house.” She stopped taking a breath of air, and I was about to suggest dinner to discuss it when she started talking. Again.

“I haven’t eaten all day, and I know you have to be hungry after traveling all day. We can discuss details over dinner." She finally stopped speaking as I stared at her, a little smirk playing my lips.

I was hungry, and I had been about to suggest the same thing. Better her than me though, so she didn’t think I was hitting on her. Even if I wanted to. "Hell, why not? I'm fucking starving. I haven't eaten since breakfast. Let me go check in and put my luggage in my room. I shouldn’t be more than fifteen minutes." I picked up my bags and started back towards the front doors of the hotel.

  Chapter Two

  Alexa

“Fifteen minutes. I'll get my truck." I could barely manage to get the words out, his steel-blue eyes were distracting me, and that shock had lost me. I stared as he walked into the hotel. Shaking my head, I wandered to my truck.

I hadn't expected Daniel to be so damn handsome. I mean, I’d heard the rumors about him, but it’s not like I had looked him up to see if they were true. He had to be at least six feet tall. Shoulder length black hair, slightly unkempt, probably from running his hands through it all day. His shoulders were broad, banging shoulders, the girls in school would have called them.

God, he looked like he spent hours at the gym, and I wondered what he looked like under that suit. And that ass! It was tight and his pants hugged it so nicely. His tanned skin looked natural, a nice change from most of the outsiders that came here. He was younger than I had expected him to be, and though I was not one for facial hair, the smattering of his five o’clock shadow was attractive.

I needed this job because Sean had left me with nothing. It had been nine months since our divorce was finalized, and a break from the city would be good for me. When John had asked me to help him out for a little bit, while he looked for someone permanently, I’d jumped on it. I owed John and Sheila a lot, and beside them, there was nothing tying me to Anchorage anymore. What they had done for me over the last year, I could never repay them for, but I could start here.

Fuck, if I wasn’t here as a favor to John, I would be making plans beyond dinner with Daniel. It had been a long time and he stirred something primal deep in me, that needed to be fed. That was if he even noticed me. He was out of my league and I didn’t want to be another Cinderella on his bed post.

I looked at my truck, sighing as I took in its personality. It was beaten to hell, but I knew it could make it from Anchorage to Fairbanks and back on a tank and a half of gas. It was a good ol’ Ford, steel, sturdy. I loved this truck. It had been with me through hell. Getting in, I started it up and pulled down to the Cook to wait for Daniel. As I waited, I got lost in the past, in what should have been a happy time. Maybe the memory would help me stay away from Daniel.

I had wanted a family with Sean, but he had never seemed that interested. He didn’t want a baby. Well, not with me. He finally told me the truth when I told him I was pregnant. It tore me apart to find out. Even if I had suspected it. What I hadn’t expected though was for him to be so angry about the fact that I was pregnant. I’ll never forget what happened.

"I'm pregnant, Sean!" I’d run into the living room to tell him the good news as soon as the test had come back positive. Sean paused what he was watching and turned to look at me, anger dancing thru his eyes.

"What do you fucking mean you’re pregnant? I thought we had this talk. You don't get pregnant until I fucking tell you too!" He rose from his chair yelling so fast, the poor thing almost fell over. "I'm not ready… Fucking hell you dumb bitch. What happens if I go to Portland while you’re pregnant? I can't just up and drop everything because you’re fucking pregnant! I have a life and... Fuck. I’m just going to tell you the truth. I detest you. I only married you because it was the only way you would let me fuck you.” His words ripped through me. I clutched my chest as he yelled at me.

“I never loved you. I just wanted to fuck you.” I was falling apart inside as I listened to him. I couldn’t believe it, but all the signs had been there. The distance, the constant trips. I had just been to blind to see it right in front of my face.

He laughed as he continued with his confession. “There's someone else. She lives in Portland. She knows about you. She knows I’m only with you because we can only meet when her boyfriend’s out of town. He's rich. Doesn't question her about me. What he doesn't know won't hurt him. Hell, Alexa, the sex has never even been that great.”

I was in tears by that point. With her it’s amazing. I didn't want to do this till she had left him but fuck it. I want a divorce, Alexa. You, that thing, I never want to see it. Never want to see you again. Go get your shit. Get the fuck out of my house."

I’d run from the room crying. Grabbed what was important to me, and put my ring on the coffee table.

"Take it. I don't want it. Here, take this too,” he said as he threw his ring at me. "Maybe you can get something for them at a pawn shop." I thought he was being nice by walking me to the door. Until he shoved me across the snow and ice covered porch, causing me to tumble down the stairs. I landed hard across the last couple stairs, smashing into my abdomen. I glared at Sean, trying to hide the pain.

"How could you do that?" I pressed my hand across my stomach, the pain intense.

"I had to try to get that thing out of you. I don't need you thinking you can get money for it, now do I?" He laughed as he slammed the door of the house.

I crawled to my truck and used the door to pull myself up. I pulled myself up using the truck and felt a searing pain tear through me. I knew then that I had lost the baby, but I hoped that it wasn’t true. I had to go somewhere, get away from Sean. I had to go to John. He didn’t live too far from us, and he wo
uld help me.

As I was pulling my keys out of my pocket I felt a wave of vertigo. I had to get in the truck. Get to my brother’s house. I knew that if I didn't, I would be lost. I pulled the door open and sat in the driver’s seat, letting another wave of pain and vertigo pass over me. I started the engine and backed onto the street. Was it me, or was the road wobblier than normal? It didn’t matter. I knew where I was going.

I had just pulled into the driveway when I blacked out from the pain. When I woke up I was in the hospital with John hovering over me.

"Hey little sister," he smiled at me as I opened my eyes. "I knew you didn't like my car, but don't you think putting it through the garage door was a bit much?" He was teasing me. I could see the humor dancing in his eyes.

"Oh god, John! I'm so sorry. I'll pay you back for it. I promise!" I tried to sit up and look at him, but he just pushed me back down against the hospital bed. I winced in pain.

“You don't want to pull any stitches now do you?" He asked me, all seriousness this time. "What happened Alexa? We called Sean to ask what had happened to you and he said you fell down the stairs and drove off. That you stormed off after he told you he was divorcing you and before he could get to you, you had slipped down the stairs. I don't believe him. What really happened, Alexa? Tell me."

"I told him about the baby." I reflexively put my hands across my stomach and looked at John, pleading with him to tell me the pain was just a bad dream and my baby was safe. Sadness laced through his eyes as he shook his head at me. I took a deep, shuddering breath as I continued.

"He told me to get out. That he never wanted to see me or... Or the baby again. Told me he had been cheating on me with a woman in Portland. As I was walking out the door, he pushed me. The porch was slick and I couldn't get my footing. I fell down the stairs and landed on my stomach. I asked him why he would do that, and he told me to take care of the ‘problem’. Oh god, John! He killed my baby!" I was sobbing by the time I finished telling John everything.
