She smiled. “When I was at the grocery store, I found this new drain cleaner that you’re supposed to keep in the freezer until you use it.”
She took a small yellow box from the freezer and began to read the instructions.
“New Shazaam Drain Cleaner! The drain cleaner in a pouch! Remove one pouch from box and replace box in freezer to keep fresh. Place pouch in sink drain. If pouch does not easily pass through grate in drain, use spoon handle to gently force it through grate. After pouch is placed properly, turn on cold water faucet and run water no less than two minutes.”
She opened the box. “Huh, it looks like a small tea bag. Okay, put the box back in the freezer. Now, place the pouch in the drain. Being that we’re putting it in the side that the disposal is on, I guess we don’t have to worry about the grate, do we?”
Roddy smiled as he continued to rock his screaming little brother in his arms.
“Okay,” said the young mother. “Here goes the water.”
She turned on the cold water faucet and cautiously peered down into the drain. Smiling, she began to say something when she suddenly froze in place. Her eyes began to bulge out as she attempted to take a breath. Almost immediately, she collapsed. She was dead before her body hit the floor.
Roddy stood completely stunned, unable to comprehend what had just occurred. He said one word. “Mommy!” Then he dropped his brother and fell to the floor.
In the small suburban ranch house, it was finally quiet. There was only the sound of water running in the sink. The baby had finally stopped crying.
