  Lacie

“Mom, why can’t Ryan stay with us? I don’t want him to go home with daddy.” I cried as I watched daddy and Ryan pull out of the driveway.

“Lacie, you are too young to understand right now, but one day when you are older I will explain everything.” Mom said as she pulled me into the house.

I was 10 and that was old enough to know what was going on and if she wasn’t going to tell me I would ask my big brother Ryan the next time I got to see him. It was the end of summer and school would be starting soon so I wouldn’t see Ryan again until Christmas. I better make a list because by the time Christmas got here I would have a lot of questions for him.

“Mom, how much further? We have been driving for hours and I’m bored.” I whined as I pressed my forehead to the cool window.

“Well this is Athens, I just have to find the High School where your brother’s graduation is being held.” She said as she looked around for the school.

I was just about to move my head when I heard a loud rumble coming down the road in front of us. The sky was clear so I knew it wasn’t thunder, but I couldn’t see anything that would be making that much noise.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” My mom yelled as she hit the steering wheel.

I followed her gaze to see what had her so riled up and that’s when I saw at least 20 motorcycles coming down the road. My mother was very prim and proper, very rarely did she cuss or show her anger in public. Her rage continued when she realized the motorcycle gang was going to the same High School we were headed too. She cussed and mumbled her anger and disgust under her breath. She was always mad about something so I ignored her and looked around for my dad’s truck.

“Mom! Lacie! You made it!” Ryan yelled as ran towards us in his cap and gown.

He picked me up and spun me around. As he was putting me down I saw my dad approach and I knew things were about to get awkward. My parents divorced before I was one and I have never heard them have conversation that didn’t end in yelling.

“Lacie, you look beautiful.” My dad said as he gave me a big hug.

My mom said my dad was a business man and he cared more about his business than his family and that was why they divorced. She never told me what kind of business he was into¸ but he didn’t look like a business man. He was tall, very tanned, had long hair and a long beard. He had big muscles and always wore shirts that clung to him making him look even bigger. He was the scariest business man I had ever seen, but no matter how big and bad he looked my mother was not scared of him. My dad on the other hand always looked very scared of my mom.

“Hi dad. I missed you.” I smiled.

“I’ve missed you too sweetheart. Are you glad school is out?”

“So glad. Since school is out for summer do you think I could come home with you and Ryan?” I begged.

“No Lacie you can’t go with your dad and now that your brother has graduated I think it’s time he come home with us. We need to start looking at colleges and deciding your future.” Mom spat out before anyone could answer.

My mom wasn’t very tall and she didn’t weight 115 pounds, but she was the scariest person I had ever met. I learned at a very early age that she was a bully and just basically a bitch. She walked around with her nose in the air and the attitude of being better than everyone else.

“Mom I’m staying with dad. I don’t think I’m going to go to college, at least not right away.” My brother was shaking and looking at the ground.

  Everyone was afraid of mom!

“And just what are you going to do Ryan?” Mom said.

“I was thinking of helping dad and going into” Mom slapped him in the face before he could get anything else out.

“Nancy, cut it out. He’s my son too and he has grown up with me so don’t think you are going to take him away just because he graduated.” Dad said as he stepped in between mom and Ryan.

“Fine, I’m done. Ryan if you want to be as worthless as your fucking father I won’t stand in your way, but don’t ever come to me when you need help out of that life. Hudson he is all yours, go fuck up his life like you fuck everything up. Lacie tell them both bye, we are done here.” She turned on her heel and headed to the car.

“Sara I can’t believe we just graduated!” I said to my best friend as we walked across the football field in our caps and gowns.

“I don’t know why you are so happy Lace, your mom has you enrolled in college classes starting in 2 weeks.” Sara said with a frown

I was pretty pissed about having to start college in a couple weeks, but nothing was going to ruin my good mood because for the first time in 5 years I was about to see my dad and brother. My mom had made it her life’s mission to keep them out of my life for the past 5 years, but graduation was a public event and they promised me they were coming. I had been using Sara’s cell phone to call them over the past year.

“Theirs’s my valedictorian. Lacie I am so proud of you. Just think in 8 short years we will be calling you Dr. Lacie Perce.” Mom was smiling ear to ear and talking loud enough to make sure everyone heard her.

I could feel the panic attack coming on at the mention of 8 years of college and being a Doctor. I didn’t want to go to college at all much less 8 fucking years of it. And I sure as hell didn’t want to be a doctor.

“Lacie, what are they doing here?” I followed my mom’s angry glare to see my da
d and brother walking towards us.

Dad looked older, more lines on his face and more gray in his hair, but still the same old dad. Ryan on the other hand I barely recognized, he wasn’t the tall skinny kid I remembered. His dark hair was a little past his shoulders, his beard was coming in nicely, and the button up shirt I’m sure dad made him wear was stretched to the seams over his growing muscles.

“Lace, your brother is HOT!” Sara whispered in my ear so my mom wouldn’t hear her.

“Dad, Ryan, I’m so glad you came.” I yelled as I ran to them so maybe we could all avoid mom and whatever lecture she was going to give us.

“Lacie I’m so proud of you, or should I say Dr. Perce?” Mom was looking at me like I was the queen of England.

Well I had finally made all my mom’s dreams come true. After 26 years I had finally made that evil woman happy and now maybe she would get the fuck off my back.

“So honey tell me every hospital that you have applied too.” Mom asked as she adjusted my cap.

“Not right now mom, I’m looking for dad and Ryan.”

“What? Why would” I put my hand up to silence her.

“Don’t start mom and don’t give me that disappointing look. I just worked my ass off for 8 long years to become your perfect doctor daughter. The least you could do is let me have this one day with the people I love.” I cut my speech short as I saw Ryan’s head above the crowd.

Dad was not aging well and he seemed to be walking with a limp. His face lit up when he saw me and for the first time in 8 years I was proud of everything I had accomplished. Dad never ask anything of me, he just loved me. He showed me more love in the handful of times I had seen him than my mother showed me in my whole life with her.

“My little sister, the doctor. I’m so proud of you Lacie.” Ryan picked me up and spun me around just like old times.

His hair was back in a ponytail and his beard hung down to his chest. If I had to guess I would say he was 6’4 and 250 pounds of pure muscle. Last time I saw him he was in a button up shirt so I couldn’t see his arms, but today he wore a tight black t-shirt and I could clearly see the full selves of tattoos that covered his arms. I looked over at our mother who just stood there with a look of disgust all over her face. Mom thought tattoos were white trash and she would die if she knew I had 3.

“Ryan lay off the roids.” I laughed as I hit his rock hard arm. “I am so glad y’all made it.”

“We wouldn’t have missed it for anything in the world sweetie.” Dad said as he hugged me tight.

Who the fuck is calling me at 9 A.M on a Saturday morning. I have been working double shifts at the hospital for months now and on my first Saturday off some asshole is calling and waking me up.

“Blocked number, what the fuck.” I grumbled. “This better be a life or death situation.” I said into the phone not caring who was on the other line.

“Still not a morning person sis?” Ryan couldn’t hide the amusement in his voice.

“Ryan, oh my god. Is it really you?” Just hearing the sound of his voice was like drinking a whole cup of black coffee.

“Yeah it is sis, but this isn’t a social call.” He cleared his throat and I knew it was bad news. “Our old man died yesterday, heart attack while we were fishing. I couldn’t get him to the hospital in time.” He was right to the point, just like dad.

  “Oh Ryan, I’m so sorry.”

“Lace why are you apologizing, he was your dad too.”

“I know, but he raised you. I barely knew him. I loved him don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I feel like he was a complete stranger.” My voice came out shaky as I fought back tears.

“That’s kind of why I’m calling. Lace its time you know the truth about him, the truth about me, and the truth about that horrible woman that gave birth to us. The funeral is Monday, nothing big just a burial. I don’t expect you come and I don’t blame you. I know you’re a hot shot doctor now and you probably have shit to do.” He said the last part with a sense of pride that made me smile.

“Shit, I have a surgery Monday that I can’t reschedule. I’m free all day today and tomorrow if you want to talk. I really do want to know more about him and you.”

“Lace our family secrets aren’t something I want to tell over the phone. Maybe in the near future you could come down to Texas and we could catch up. I really miss you Lace.” It was a statement that cut right to my heart.

“I miss you too Ryan. I’ll have to check my schedule and see what surgeries I have coming up. It may not be in the next few weeks, but I promise I will come.” I choked out through my tears.

“I’ll text you the address. Oh and Lace, don’t tell her he’s gone. She doesn’t deserve that satisfaction.”

“I haven’t talked to mom in 3 years.” I know he wanted to know why, but that was all I could muster up to say on the subject.

  Present Day

  Lacie

“How long are you going to be gone Lace?” Sara asked.

“Well I took the whole week off, but since I am just showing up without any notice I may only be gone a few days. Ryan is probably busy and doesn’t have a lot of time to spend with me.” It was an excuse I had been telling myself for weeks just in case it turned out to be true.

“And why didn’t you give Ryan any notice? Come on Lacie, what’s going on?” Sara pried as she tried to make eye contact with me.

“Ok, I didn’t tell him because I don’t know if I can actually go through with this. He said there was some family secret, which I have always suspected there was more to my dad than what SHE told me. Part of me is dying to know what it is, but part of me just wants to remember what little I knew of him.” It was an inner war I had been fighting for months.

“Suck it up buttercup and get in the damn car. If you don’t go I will call Ryan and make him come here and tell you everything. You deserve to know the truth and you deserve to have some family other than that evil bitch who gave birth to you.” Sara shoved me in the car as she spoke.

She may be shorter than me, but I was pretty sure she could kick my ass so I did as she said. I got in the car and pulled away from the house I shared with my best friend. I hadn’t been to Athens, Texas since I was a kid, but I remembered it was a long boring drive.

I passed the time by trying to figure out what the secret might be. Was my dad a spy for the CIA, or an agent for the FBI? Was he some big Oil tycoon who wanted to just blend in with regular people? Maybe he was on the run and had a secret identity. My mind ventured back to when my mom would say he was a “Business Man”, but what kind of business would keep him away from his own daughter?

I finally gave up and decided to turn my iPod on and my mind off. I would find the answer to my questions in a few short hours. Right now I would just sing at the top of my lungs like I didn’t have a care in the world.

“Turn right in one mile!” The GPS lady said in the most annoying voice in the world.

“Bitch, are you lost? We pasted Athens 5 miles ago and there is nothing out here, but tumble weeds.” I said to the stupid GPS as I looked out the window for any sign of human life.

“Now go two point five miles.”

Is this a joke? I see nothing! Absolutely nothing! If this GPS wasn’t on my phone I would chunk the motherfucker out the window. This looks like the same area as “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. Mental note, kick Sara in the twat for making me watch every scary movie ever made.

“You have now reached your destination!” Creepy GPS lady said as I was thinking about being chopped up by a chainsaw.

“Bitch are you high? This looks like an abandoned warehouse. A very scary abandoned warehouse with, is that barbwire around the top of the wall that is surrounding this place?” It took me a minute to realize I was talking to no one.

I was pretty sure it was abandoned so I pulled in the driveway and put my car in park. I typed in the address one more time that Ryan had text me. The blue dot indicating me was right over the red dot indicating the location of the address. I was just about to put the car in reverse and get the hell out of there when someone tapped on my window.

“Holy Hell, MotherFucker!!” I yelled as I threw my phone and jumped at least 6 inches out of my seat.

“Um ma’am are you lost?” A tall skinny kid with a leather vest that said “Prospect” ask me as I rolled down my window.

“Yes, I think I am. I’m looking for 18692 South East Benhill Road.” I managed to get out without sounding absolutely terrified.

“Well this is 18692 South East Benhill Road, but you don’t look like the normal bitches that hang out here. Are you a cop?” He looked at me like it would be a big problem if I was a cop.

“No no, definitely not a cop. My brother gave me this address and said this is where he lives. His name is Ryan Perce, do you know him?” I felt bad giving him Ryan’s name, but at this point I didn’t know what else to do.

“Hold on while I make a call.” He put up a finger and was on his phone before I could protest. “Logan, I got some fancy looking bitch at the gate asking for a Ryan Perce. Says she’s his sister.”

I couldn’t hear what was being said, but it couldn’t be good because the guys face turned white and he looked like he was going to be sick.

“Ma’am I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. Go right on in, Force is waiting on you.” He was almost stuttering as he fumbled with the lock on the gate.

“That’s more like it, wait? What? Who is Force? RYAN, I said my brother’s name is Ryan.” But it was no use, he had the gate open and was flagging me inside.

I pulled up a few feet and stopped to check out my surroundings. My mouth dropped open as I stared at what I thought was an abandoned warehouse. Straight in front of me were several garage doors like you would see at an oil changing place. On my right was a few jacked up trucks and some vans all with blacked out windows. Behind the vehicles was a wall at least 8 foot tall with barbed wire on the top and cameras in the corner. On my left was 10 to 15 motorcycles all pulled in backwards like they needed to make a quick getaway. Behind the row of bikes was a long white building with no windows and what appeared to be only one door.
