  Chapter Thirty

Cameron knew that he was no match for Damien, and watched on helplessly as the vampire took Shanna into his arms and carried her back to her car. Shanna felt no sympathy for Cameron at that moment. She had seen a side of him she’d never imagined was there. She didn’t know what she felt at this betrayal. She was just numb. It was unthinkable that this could happen.

“Are you okay?” Damien asked as he climbed into the driver’s seat.

Shanna nodded, not trusting herself to speak, as he looked her over carefully, with such tender concern. He looked so beautiful, just like she remembered him from Greece. How many times had she wished to be this close to him again? And now here he was, right where she wanted him, and it couldn’t have been a more awful time. She wanted to cower in a corner and rock herself. She wanted to scream and cry. But everything had happened so quickly that it still seemed like a dream. Was this what shock felt like?

“Of course you’re not okay,” Damien muttered to himself. “I’ll drive you wherever you want to go.”

“I…” Shanna closed her mouth, not trusting herself to speak. And honestly, she had no idea where she wanted to go. She couldn’t go back to Lime Bay now, and face everyone after…this.

Damien seemed to sense this and nodded. “I can take you back to my place. You can get cleaned up and take some time to think. How does that sound?”

Shanna nodded as Damien brought the car to life, then she slumped against the car door. She felt tired. Hard to imagine she would feel that way again so soon after her confrontation with the dream demon, but there it was. She felt battle-weary, emotionally-drained. And she wanted to escape this nightmare that she found herself in. This was much worse than anything The Sandman could have ever dreamt up for her.
