A Heart of Ice

Laughing sleepily, I say, “Yes…I do believe I hold that right. If you let them take it from me, I’ll be cross.”

“Ah, well…” he trails off, smiling faintly. “I’d hate to see you cross, Cara. I suppose I’ll have to stay alive.”

My smile is a little warmer, and Alistair sighs. “Och, we need to leave. That alright with you two?” We both shoot him a nasty look, which makes him laugh, and I shake my head, following Alistair out of the courtyard when Gabriel backs away from the horses. Enté will wake soon…I won’t be there to tell him good morning…

“I’m right here, Scarlet,” Alistair says quietly, not looking at me. He gives a ghost of a smile, looking straight ahead. “It’s not the end, lass…only the beginning.”

And so we ride…away from Ocarine. Away from the man I love and from the child I call mine. Away from the cold and the past, away from death. We ride on to Flora…

  Onward to my new beginning.

  About A Heart of Ice

I first wrote A Heart of Ice when I was in Biloxi, Mississippi in the tenth grade. My mom and nana were hanging out in the casino and I was stuck in a boring hotel room. So what else are you gonna do, right?

The first copy, however, was only about 60 pages long and titled Night and Day. Over the years, I expanded on the flat characters and unrealistic plot line until I had a much larger, more developed story. I decided to split it into three and title the whole series after the original manuscript.

This book has gone through four revisions where I scrapped it and completely rewrote it and many more editing reviews. I know this thing backwards forwards and upside down.

When I finally got to the point where I felt it was done, I gave it to my husband and my friend, Derian. Derian sent it back with a giant email of corrections, including a detailed explanation for why my ending sucked beyond reason. And he was right. (Thanks Derian!) So, I rewrote the ending for the fourth time and finally felt the whole thing come together at last.

I love my book. Every time I read it, I laugh and I squirm in anticipation and I cuss out characters in my head. It makes me happy. And I hope you have as much fun reading it as I do!
