by Kenneth Hite

“The Shadow Over Innsmouth” (1931). Contains the report that led to the Innsmouth Raid and began the covert Cthulhu Wars.

  Other Fiction

Bloch, Robert. Strange Eons (Pinnacle Books, Los Angeles, 1979). Presents a world of omnipresent cult activity that fulfills Lovecraft’s predictive nightmares.

Derleth, August. “The Black Island” (Weird Tales, January 1952). Concludes with the atomic bombing of R’lyeh during a nuclear test.

Detwiller, Dennis. Denied to the Enemy (Tynes Cowan Corp., Seattle, 2003). World War II novel set in the Delta Green universe.

Johnson, Robert Barbour. “Far Below” (Weird Tales, June/July 1939). Unveils the secret war between the Ghouls and the Special Subway Detail of the NYPD.

Lumley, Brian. The Burrowers Beneath (DAW Books, New York, 1974). Over-the-top novel of a full secret-war mobilization against a Mythos threat, the “Cthonians.”

Stross, Charlie. The Atrocity Archives (Golden Gryphon Press, Urbana, IL, 2004). This novel and its sequels combine Lovecraft with tradecraft; they’re spy thrillers in a Mythos-haunted world.

  Games

Delta Green (Pagan Publishing, 1997). By combining the national security state with the Cthulhu Mythos, this magnificent setting for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop role-playing game manages to encapsulate both paranoias. Coming soon as a standalone RPG from Arc Dream Publishing.

Hornet Leader: The Cthulhu Conflict (DVG, 2013). Expansion for tabletop carrier-mission sim Hornet Leader covers the War on Horror.

“The Raid on Innsmouth” (Chaosium, 1992). Brilliant RPG simulation of the titular raid, for Call of Cthulhu.

Strange Aeons (Uncle Mike’s Worldwide, 2nd ed. 2015). Lovecraftian skirmish miniatures game; its 32mm figures are essentially compatible with Osprey’s 28mm miniatures lines. The monsters should loom at least a little larger.

  Movies

The Devil’s Tomb (2009). Special Forces team in the Middle East encounters a primordial temple that serves as a prison for the Nephilim. Straight-to-DVD.

Monsters (2010). Director Gareth Edwards depicts a world halfway through an incomprehensible alien invasion from a civilian perspective behind the lines. His Godzilla (2014) foregrounds the military response to prehistoric demigods.

The Objective (2008). Crackling uncertainty horror follows a Special Forces team in Afghanistan; tightly scripted and directed by Daniel Myrick.

R-Point (2004). Kong Su-chang directs the best of the films mentioned here, about a South Korean platoon sent into a nightmarish rescue mission during the Vietnam War.

Ravenous (2002). Writer Ted Griffin infuses this cavalry vs Wendigo story set in the 1840s West with black humor and irony.
