“Don’t nobody need to talk shit into me! I keep telling you I ain’t fuck that damn girl… You know what; fuck this shit!” Ray’Shun hopped up and grabbed his keys off the coffee table. He started to the front door but stopped dead in his tracks when Trinity spoke up.

“Oh, so what you about to do? Go sing and cry to her, too?” she asked. Ronny, Bino and Cornell’s eyes went to Ray’Shun. Ray’Shun singing was something they couldn’t believe.

Bursting out with laughter, Bino said, “Damn lil nigga, yo’ daddy done rubbed off on you?” Cornell laughed as well, as Ronny flipped him the middle finger with a chuckle.

“Yeah nephew, you been holding out on us. You can sing too?” Cornell asked.

“Man, I wasn’t crying!” was all Ray’Shun said back. He was slightly embarrassed that Trinity had called him out like that. And their childish asses weren’t making it any better.

“Damn near,” Trinity whispered but not low enough to be unheard.

“But I wasn’t! You know what Trinity. I’m not about to keep going through this with you. I’m only eighteen, too young to always be arguing about another female. You too naïve and insecure. You ain’t gon’ never keep a man because you have trust issues,” Ray’Shun explained as he walked over and was now standing in her face as she sat on the couch staring up at him.

“Look at all the stuff you take me through, of course I’ma have trust issues when it comes to you. I should’ve listened to Mama Shan when she told me not to take you back until you got your ish together. I should’ve went on and dated somebody else and gave you a dose of your own medicine.” Ronny’s eyes bucked as he shook his head when she spilled the beans of what his wife had been putting in her ear. Cornell and Bino laughed because that sounded just like Shaniqua. Her ass didn’t care what she said.

“Yeah, well I’ll make it easy for you to date somebody else. It’s over! Now you can sit with my mama and discuss that with her.” With that, Ray’Shun walked out the front door, leaving Trinity along with the three men sitting there with their mouths hanging open. When she turned to look at them with teary eyes, they turned their heads as if they hadn’t heard a thing.

  Chapter 15

See baby we been too strong for too long (and I can’t be without you, baby).

Mary J Blige played through Shaniqua’s phone with a photo of her and Ronny and the word ‘Hubby’ popped up on her screen, indicating that he was calling. Sending him to the voicemail, she placed the car in park and got out.

“Come on, y’all,” she said to Ni-Ni and RJ. She’d just gotten to Brooke’s house and knew Ronny was calling to probably question her of her whereabouts. She didn’t let him know for a reason. He would’ve been demanding she took Destiny and Shaniyah with her and she didn’t feel like dealing with their grown behinds, today.

“Hey babies,” Brooke said as she wrapped her arms around Ni-Ni then lifted RJ in the air. His little bad ass was her heart.

“Hey Auntie,” he said with excitement in his voice. He loved himself some her too, and swore she was his lil girlfriend instead of his auntie. And don’t let Bino come around; RJ would have a fit if Bino touched Brooke. Sometimes, Bino would do it just for the hell of it.

“Where Niyah and Destiny?” Brooke then asked as they all walked inside. Ni-Ni dashed up the stairs to play with Kelly and Angel. They might’ve been a year or two older than her, but they never singled her out of anything.

“Girl, I left their hot asses at the house. I didn’t feel like being bothered with no grown ass kids today. Ronny can deal with them, shit,” Shaniqua explained, as she removed her coat and took a seat on the couch.

Brooke laughed as she removed RJ’s jacket then put the TV on cartoons for him.

  “I heard that.”

“I’m so serious, girl. Those two heifers going to be the death of me. All I wanna do nowadays is smoke and drink because of them. That’s how much they work my nerve,” Brooke continued to laugh as Shaniqua rumbled on. “Where is Lil Bino?”

“Girl, his bad ass is upstairs somewhere. He must be all into that game or something because you know he’s supposed to have been down here by now,” Brooke replied. Turning towards the stairs, she yelled for her and Bino’s son to come down and minutes later, he was running down the steps. “What you up there doing?”

“RJ. Hey cousin,” Brandon ran over to RJ and gave him a fist pound. Both Shaniqua and Brooke shook their heads. Those two weren’t nobody but Ronny and Bino all over again. Now, Brooke’s kids she shared with her ex-husband were so well-mannered but Brandon—he was Bino’s child and that alone was self-explanatory.

“Well hey to you too, big head. You can’t speak?” Shaniqua said as she stuck her foot out and gave him a little kick. It wasn’t too hard but it was enough to damn near knock him down. Turning to face her, he gave her the cutest little mug that caused her to laugh.

“It ain’t funny!” he said as he stared at her through narrowed eyes. It was safe to say that Shaniqua wasn’t one of his favorite people. He loved himself some Auntie Star, but he could definitely do without Shaniqua.

“It is funny! Now, come give me a hug and a kiss and if you don’t come, then you better not come back to my house.”

“Yes I can, because I’ll just get my uncle to bring me over there. So I don’t care!” Brandon fussed as he stuck his tongue out at Shaniqua. Those two stayed into it and that was the reason he didn’t like her because she argued with him as if she was the same six-year-old as him.

“If I tell Ronny not to bring yo’ lil ass to my house then you not coming.”

“So, I do not care, ugly. Let’s go play, RJ.” Brandon didn’t care what Shaniqua had to say and he wasn’t about to go give her the hug that she demanded. RJ hopped up and was about to run behind Brandon towards the steps, but Shaniqua hopped up and grabbed him.

“Since I’m ugly, you not playing with my baby. He’s staying down here with his ugly mama,” she teased. RJ squirmed and tried to get away, but his mom was holding him tightly.

“Mama, can you tell auntie to stop and let RJ go so we can play?” Brandon said in his sad baby voice.

“Shan, leave my baby alone. Come on RJ.” Brooke knew how ticklish Shaniqua was, so grabbing her from behind, she began tickling her. That got her to let RJ go and he and Brandon both ran up the stairs.

“Okay, okay. Stop with yo’ childish ass!” said Shaniqua as she laughed and fought to get away.

“Says the grown ass woman that’s always arguing with a six-year-old,” Brooke responded with a duh expression. Laughing, Shaniqua took a seat because she knew it was true. “So, what’s up? What you wanted to talk to me about?”

“Tell me why Destiny’s ass is pregnant?!” Shaniqua got straight to the point. It felt so good getting that off her chest. Since Ronny hadn’t mentioned it to anyone in the family, she didn’t feel it was her place to either, but it was becoming a bit too much holding it all in. Shaniqua just needed someone to vent to and talking to her husband was like talking to a brick wall. Since all the stuff jumped off about Shaniyah and Destiny, his attitude had been nonchalant.

“Shan, if yo’ mothafuckin’ ass don’t stop playing,” Brooke said with a raised brow. She just knew Shaniqua was lying but after Shaniqua’s face expression didn’t change nor did a smile break through her pressed lips, Brooke hand shot up to her mouth. “Shan, nooo. Destiny? Really?” Brooke then said with much compassion dripping from her voice. She even looked as if she was about to cry.

“Girl, I couldn’t believe the shit either. Now, Niyah is my heart and soul and I love my baby, but I wouldn’t have been that surprised with her because she always has been a lil grown ass. Oh, and her behavior nowadays is off the chain. Girl, do you know that lil heifer skipped school a couple of months ago to go lay up with some lil nappy headed boy?” As Shaniqua informed Brooke on what’s been going on inside the McDay’s home, Brooke was looking at her in disbelief. “Man, it’s so much shit been going on over there girl, I don’t k
now if I’m coming or going. I need a damn vacation or something.”

“Oh my God! I’m like in so much shock right now. I don’t even know what to say. Hell, to be honest, I’m still stuck on the fact that Destiny is pregnant. What the hell is she going to do with a baby, Shan? How old is she; eleven?” Brooke asked with much attitude. Hell, she didn’t even know kids were really fucking at that age.

“Child, she’ll be fourteen in a few days.”

“And what Ronny have to say about this? I bet he almost beat her mothafuckin’ ass.”

Rolling her eyes, Shaniqua shook her head and sighed heavily. “He wanted her to have an abortion. But I—,” Shaniqua started but was cut off by Brooke’s outburst. Brooke definitely wasn’t feeling Destiny’s young ass being pregnant.

“Hell, she needed to have one and her ass beat! Destiny know damn better. How far along is she? Is it too late? Why in the hell she didn’t get one Shan?”

“It wasn’t too late at the time. I talked Ronny out of it.” When Shaniqua said that, Brooke threw her hands in the air, dramatically. She didn’t know what in the hell Shaniqua was thinking letting that girl keep that baby. “Don’t be looking at me like that, Brooke. Yeah, I know she’s young but you never know how things will turn out with abortions. What if something was to go wrong and she’s not able to have kids again? I didn’t wanna her going through that. I’ve had an abortion before so I know firsthand that this shit isn’t something that you just brush off and walk away. You have to live with it for the rest of your life. Just like she’s too young to be having a baby, she’s too fucking young to be having an abortion.”

“I feel what you’re saying and I agree, but I’m just like Ronny. Let either one of mine come to me hollering about she pregnant, I’ll snatch a knot in her ass so gotdamn fast and if I don’t beat the damn baby out of her then she’s having an abortion. So, she’ll get rid of it one way or the other and that’s a promise.” Brooke couldn’t believe Shaniqua was letting Destiny walk around carrying a baby. Then she was being nonchalant about it, like it wasn’t a big damn deal. “I can’t believe you so cool about it, though,” Brooke then said. Shaniqua was all leaned back on the couch with her feet all propped up and shit. Brooke wanted to go slap some sense into her friend.

With a shrug, Shaniqua said, “Believe me, I’m mad about it but it already happened so what can I do about it. In a few months the baby will be here.” She sat up and looked over at Brooke with all seriousness. “Brooke, you know how much I love Destiny and I consider her as my own child, even though she’s not.”

“Yes, I know. What about it?” Brook answered slowly as she sat up to give Shaniqua her undivided attention.

“Is it wrong for me to say that I’m glad Shaniyah’s not the one that’s pregnant? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m hurt beyond words that Destiny is but if it was Niyah, I would be hurt worst. Like, she’s mine, mine and you know they say your child is a reflection of you!” Shaniqua chuckled and shrugged. “I don’t know. I can’t even explain it.”

“Oh, I understand you to the fullest.” Looking back towards the steps, Brooke laughed and said, “It’s plenty of shit Kelly does that has me like, I’m glad my baby don’t be on that bullshit.”

“We some petty ass hoes,” Shaniqua laughed and they both high-fived one another. They chatted for a little while longer before Shaniqua headed home to face her husband. She’d been ignoring his calls since she first got to Brooke’s house and even Bino had gotten home and told her that he said to call him but she never did. Because of that, she knew he was about to be on some bullshit. Oh well, she was in need of that little time she spent away from the drama at her home.

Ray’Shun pulled up to Slim’s house and he hopped in. They didn’t really have a destination in mind but Slim was his right-hand man and always down to ride. He sat over in the passenger seat rolling a blunt as Ray’Shun hit the interstate. He didn’t ask any questions. Ray’Shun hit him up and said ‘let’s ride’ and that was all that needed to be said. Seven hours later, they were getting off the New Jersey exit.

“Nigga, who the hell you know stay in New Jersey?” Slim finally asked. The whole ride he hadn’t asked any questions but right now, his curiosity was getting the best of him.

“Just sit back and ride. We almost there,” was all Ray’Shun said and twenty minutes later, they pulled into a nice brick home. Ray’Shun didn’t think he would remember how to get there without his father but he did and the visit was long overdue.

“Who the hell lives here?” Slim asked as they stepped out the car. “Let me find out you got hoes with different area codes,” Slim laughed at his own corny joke. Ray’Shun just shook his head and continued his stroll towards the front porch.

“Shut the hell up nigga. My damn grandma lives here.” Just as the words left Ray’Shun’s mouth, the door swung open.

“I know that’s not you out here cursing like a sailor, boy?!” Grandma Thelma said with a raised brow. Ray’Shun’s mouth dropped because he honestly didn’t think she heard him.

“I’m sorry grandma, it slipped.” Taking her in, Ray’Shun hugged her then introduced her to Slim before she welcomed them into her home. She made a mental note to get into Ray’Shun’s ass for bringing just anyone into her home. She didn’t know that boy from a can of worms and here her grandson is bringing him to her house. She didn’t like that one bit.

“Boy, where your mama and daddy at? I know you didn’t drive all the way up here by yourself?” she asked as she looked Ray’Shun over. He looked more and more like his father each time she saw him.

“They at the crib. I just needed to get away for a little while. What you cook Grandma?” Ray’Shun headed straight to the kitchen while Slim took a seat on the couch. Ray’Shun could’ve warned him that they were going to his grandmother house before he smoked the blunt when they got off the freeway. It was so rude of him meeting her while smelling like weed.

“I didn’t cook nothing because I wasn’t planning on having company. You should’ve called first,” Grandma Thelma yelled out as she took a seat in her favorite chair. She wasn’t about to leave Slim unattended in her living room. Ray’Shun returned shortly and took a seat himself. “Where you think y’all staying why you talking about you needed to get away for a few days?”

“Dang Grandma, we can’t stay here?” Ray’Shun asked with a frown. He didn’t understand why she was acting like that being that she was always fussing about how her great-grands never came to visit her.

“Who is he Ray’Shun? I never seen him before. And you could’ve called and informed me that you were bringing someone to my home. No offense baby.”

Throwing both hands in the air, Slim said, “None taken.” He truly understood where she was coming from and if she didn’t feel comfortable with him being there, then he had no problem getting himself a room.

Smacking his lips, Ray’Shun said, “Man, he’s cool grandma. You know I wouldn’t bring just anybody to yo’ crib. You can call pops and ask him. Him and Ma done met him.”

Grandma Thelma was skeptical but she went on and agreed to let them stay for a few nights. However, she was definitely going to give her grandson a call because something didn’t seem right to her. She wasn’t believing that Ray’Shun just wanted to get away for a few days because there was drama; and she would soon find out that he was just trying to escape his relationship problems with Trinity.

  Chapter 16

  Two months later

Everything was out in the open with Destiny’s pregnancy and of course, Debbie got in her ass. If Destiny wasn’t already pregnant, she probably would’ve gotten her first real ass whooping. Destiny was so ashamed that it was hard for her to face her family as her belly grew bigger and bigger. Why me? is what she continuously asks herself over and over again. She couldn’t fully enjoy her pregnancy knowing the disappointment her family felt when they looked at her, especially her parents.

Ronny still wasn’t saying no m
ore than two words to her and that was a hurtful feeling.

“So, do you think they gonna let me go with you to the doctor tomorrow?” asked Man.

Almost a month ago, Destiny had to go for the sex of the baby and Ronny made it very clear that Man couldn’t be there. Because of that, Destiny didn’t even mention it to him until later on that night. He was furious. It was his child that Destiny was pregnant with and he wasn’t liking the fact that her parents were crossing him out the picture. Yeah, he was young but he was also willing to take care of his responsibility.

“I don’t know. I know Mama Shan wouldn’t care but my dad is a different story. I already know he’s gonna say no,” Destiny responded sadly. She wasn’t liking the fact that Man couldn’t be there throughout the pregnancy either. There was no way she could do this alone. Yes, she had her family but they weren’t giving her the support that she knew only the father of her child could.

“Why don’t you ask him? And if he says no then I’m gon’ have my mom to bring me up there anyways. That’s my fucking child and they can’t keep me away from it.” Man was really getting sick of Ronny and felt it was time for him to have a reality check. If Man was one of these thug type niggas that wasn’t trying to be there for Destiny, he would be ready to kill him, but here he is wanting to step up and be a part of her and that baby’s lives and Ronny still had a problem with that.

“You gonna have me to take you where?” Destiny heard Robyn’s voice in the background. That caused her heartbeat to speed up. She had only spoken to Man’s mother once on the phone since she found out she was pregnant by her son, and Robyn was pretty much preaching to her about the same thing everyone else was saying. Her and Man was too young to care for a baby. Destiny wished everyone would stop telling her that as if she didn’t know.

She loved Shaniqua wholeheartedly, but this was the time she wished she had her biological mother here with her. No, Shaniqua never mistreated her or made her feel unloved, but she needed that unconditional love that only she felt her mother could give her.
