“But you could have told him,” she said with a hint of scorn.

“And, what, have him cancel on me?” I laughed.

“You’re awful,” she teased as the doorbell rang.

“Watch this?” I asked, motioning to the pot on the stove.

Dr. Andrews, Elijah, stood at my door with a bottle of wine in one hand, and a bouquet of flowers in his other. I stepped outside the door, closing it behind me. He looked confused by me not letting him in right away. “I’m so sorry. I should have told you, but I was afraid you’d cancel on me,” I said.

He tilted his head sideways, his mouth parting just enough to show some confusion. “I already had plans with my family. My father has dementia and my sister picks him up and brings him to dinner twice a month since I moved back,” I added.

“So, your father and your sister are here?” he asked.

  I nodded.

“I understand if you want to leave,” I said.

He smiled, handed me the flowers, and then eyed the door. “You gonna let me in or not?” he asked.

A huge relief rushed over me. I couldn’t believe he was being so kind, so cool. Not only was he beautiful, but sweet as well? And a doctor? I hit the jackpot. Thank you, author whose name I can’t remember, for writing that article. If not for that, I would’ve never asked him out.

I opened the door, took the flowers, and let Elijah into my modest apartment. He immediately introduced himself to my dad, who seemed to still be pretty lucid. The game was on, and he asked Elijah if he was a Steelers fan. “Not into sports,” Elijah said. “But, why do you root for the Steelers and not the Chargers?” he asked.

“The Chargers are a bunch of pansies,” my dad scoffed, laughing and patting Elijah on the back.

It didn’t take but a few seconds for Caroline to make her way out of the kitchen and introduce herself. Elijah was sweet, answering her twenty questions before he was able to ask for a glass for the wine he brought. He told her yes, he was a doctor, an OB/GYN, he was 32 years old, lived in La Jolla, and before she could get into anything too personal, I pulled him away. I gave her a quick glare, one that told her she was embarrassing me, and she seemed to get the hint pretty quickly.

It was amazing how smoothly everything went. Elijah was an absolute charmer, causing my sister to pinch me under the table when I knew she wanted to squeal out in delight. My dad was impressed, but didn’t like that he wasn’t into sports. “I’ll change that. Turn you into a real man,” he said at the end of the meal, as Caroline pulled him out the front door.

Once everyone was gone, I wasn’t sure what to do, or say to Elijah. This man had his hand in my vagina, a spot light in there to light up parts even I hadn’t seen before. My family was an amazing buffer, but now they were gone.

“So, how well did you know Randy?” he asked.

I told him how young I was when he’d given me surfing lessons. “Wow, and you remembered him that well to connect me to him as his brother?” he asked.

“Well, I was in love with him,” I had to admit.

  He laughed. “Most girls were.”

“It’s your eyes. You have the same eyes,” I told him.

“So, you only want me for my brother’s eyes?” he teased.

I blushed, not sure how to answer that. I wanted him. I wanted him for many reasons. His brother’s eyes were only a small part of my reasons.

I listened to him tell me about Randy’s death. He drowned, surfing of course. I couldn’t believe it was only a few years after he’d taught me to surf that he was gone. For some reason my heart ached, not only for Elijah, but for Randy.

As he talked about his brother, you could see the sadness in his eyes, and hear it in his tone. “I better get going,” he said suddenly, right as I was ready to lean in and kiss his beautiful lips.

“Do you have a busy day tomorrow?” I asked.

“Two scheduled babies, and two that are so close, I may get a call tonight,” he said.

“Life of a doctor,” I said with a smile.

He grinned, took my hand, and stood from the couch. I walked him to the door where he turned and stared into me with those beautiful eyes. It was eerie. It was almost like I was looking into his brother’s eyes had been when I was eight.

“I had a really good time,” he said.

“Me, too. I’m glad you stayed,” I giggled.

“So am I,” he said, leaning in toward me.

His lips pressed against mine. They were soft, tender, and not aggressive like other men I’d kissed. He took his time, pressing against me, letting his tongue slowly glide across my lips to part them. Once his tongue entered my mouth, it was just as gentle as his lips, slowly caressing me, tasting me, and then releasing me with a gradual lean outward and away from my mouth.

“Would you like to go to a car show with me next weekend?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said, trying to snap out of the trance I was in, and now sounding like a giddy teenager.

He leaned in, kissing me once more on the forehead, and then walked toward his car.

I stood at the door, watching him until he pulled out of the parking lot and his taillights disappeared down the road. I still couldn’t believe I’d just had a date with the sexiest man I’d ever met. And, I certainly still couldn’t believe that I asked him out after he’d given me a gynecological exam.

  Chapter Four

I checked every day for new job listings. I couldn’t stand my job. The teachers were all in a clique, leaving me with the office girls, and none of them were women I’d consider friends. Most were older, and they all knew I was only working there until I found a nursing job, so that was probably the reason for the coolness. It didn’t matter. I wasn’t staying there forever. A temp job for someone who worked as hard as I did in nursing school for two years, graduating at the top of her class? No thanks.

Caroline couldn’t get enough Elijah-talk. She called him Dr. Feelgood, which I thought was funny. She’d asked his last name once, but I refused to give it to her. The last thing I needed was her digging up dirt on him and stalking him through Google and social media. I hadn’t even done that yet, and I didn’t plan to. I wanted to learn everything about him, through him. I loved talking to him and listening to his voice.

We’d text throughout the day, at least a half dozen times while we were at work. At night, we’d talk on the phone for a few minutes, and then he’d have to rush off for some reason or another, but he could always text. “Don’t you think it’s odd he can’t talk to you for long?” Caroline asked when I told her how we’d mostly text, even at night.

I did think it was odd, but I wouldn’t admit it to her. “Do you think he’s married?” she asked.

“I hardly think so,” I laughed.

“He could be. It would make sense,” she insisted.

I broke down and told her how we’d met. She laughed her ass off while she tried her best to come up with something to say. Every time she started to speak, she’d bust out laughing again. “So, see? He isn’t married,” I assured her.

“That doesn’t mean he isn’t involved with someone else. Maybe they live there, and he can’t talk or they’d hear him,” she pushed.

  “You’re such a skeptic,” I scoffed.

“Maybe I am, but there is a reason he isn’t on the phone with you for more than a few minutes at a time,” she said persuasively.

I wasn’t going to let her skepticism get to me. Elijah was a kind, sweet, and, from what I could tell, honest man. Anything he wanted to tell me, he would. Anything else, I wouldn’t worry about, at least, not yet.

“We’ve only had one date,” I reminded her.

“We’ll, you need to get to his house,” she said with a grin.

That was on my agenda, but not yet. Going to his place meant what? Sex? He’d already seen me naked, but a man like him had to be experienced, and that was something I…wasn’t.

I got ready for the car show, donning a pair of white shorts and a brigh
t-pink tank top. I grabbed my floppy hat to keep the sun out of my eyes as I headed toward the knock on the door. “You look adorable,” he said with a warm smile.

He did, too. He was wearing khaki shorts, a loose fitting t-shirt, and sandals. His skin was smooth and tan, and even though ten years older than me, he didn’t look it.

“My dad used to take me to car shows all the time when I was a little girl,” I told him.

He gripped my hand tightly, pulling me into his chest as his lips met mine. My entire body tingled as he left a lingering, sexy kiss on my mouth. His tongue glided in between my lips, into my mouth, and entangled around my own tongue. My leg lifted, kicking behind me like the girls in the movies. He made me so hot I wanted to throw him down in the grass right there for all the neighbors to see.

“We better go,” he said with a sultry tone.

“Yes,” I gasped, not sure if I truly wanted to anymore.

He opened the passenger door to his black Porsche and waited for me to slide into the leather bucker seat.

I watched as he walked around to his side and then let out an uncontrollable sigh as he slid in beside me. “You okay?” he asked with a smirk.

I nodded. I was more than okay. I was perfect.

The car show was just a short drive, but it was closer to his place in La Jolla than it was to mine. “I could’ve met you here,” I said, feeling bad he had to drive all that way and then back again.

“Then I wouldn’t have been able to check out those sexy legs while I drove,” he flirted.

“Oh, yeah, like you don’t see thirty dozen sets of those each day wrapped around your ears,” I joked.

He laughed as he pulled into a parking spot near the front of the lot. Cars were lined up, all side-by-side, with hoods up to show off the engines, and tons of people swarming the place to check them all out. “Does it bother you that I’m a gynecologist?” he asked seriously.

“Oh God, no,” I lied. It did, a little. But not enough to be a deal breaker.

“A lot of women are turned off by that or too jealous to handle it,” he said.

“I can see that. It is hard to handle knowing you’ve seen so many naked women,” I admitted.

“Yes, but men see naked women in magazines all the time. I’m working; it’s not entertainment for me,” he said sternly.

“You see naked men all the time in your profession too,” he said with a lifted eyebrow.

“Only if one of the teenagers decides to streak through the football field,” I said with a sigh.

“I thought you were a nurse?” he asked, confused.

“I am, or at least I should be,” I told him, explaining the situation. He seemed shocked that I was having so much trouble getting hired. “It is so hard to find a good nurse,” he said.

“Maybe that’s why everyone is so leery of hiring a new, fresh-out-of-school graduate. They want proof that they are reliable and competent,” I sighed.

“Maybe,” he said, leaning in and kissing me on my cheek.

As we walked around the car show, all I could think about was my dad. I wished he was lucid more often. I’d love to have this experience with him at least one more time before all his “good” days were gone.

“Are you thinking about your dad?” Elijah asked, squeezing my hand tightly in his.

I nodded, fighting back the tears. I loved that he listened to me so well, and could tell what was bothering me. It didn’t feel like a second date at all. It felt as if we’d known each other for a long time.

  Chapter Five

“Let’s get out of here,” Elijah whispered in my ear.

I was admiring a Stingray Corvette when he leaned in. The warmth of his breath against my neck made my entire body tingle. I looked up and smiled.

He led me to the car, opened the door, and let me get comfortably inside before closing the door.

When he got in and started the engine, I didn’t know where we were going, and I didn’t care.

We drove along the ocean where large waves slapped against the rocks. It was beautiful, and the more we drove, I realized that we were in La Jolla. “Where are we going?” I finally asked.

“I know a place that makes the best seared scallops in the state,” he boasted.

I leaned back in the seat, stared out the window at the beautiful scenery, and enjoyed the fact I was with Elijah.

There were restaurants lining the streets, all with fancy names, and I was certain, equally fancy food. We passed them all, driving past the bustling downtown shopping district, and then turned onto a winding road that followed the ocean.

He pulled his car onto a private lane and then stopped in front of a large, three-story home on the beach. The cliffs were being lapped by the salty waters, leaving a residue of foam and a calming sound as he opened my door, took my hand, and led me toward the beautiful home. “Is this your place?” I asked, excited that I finally could tell Caroline I’d been there. My nerves quickly took over my joy, worrying that this meant we were going to have sex. Was I ready? My body was ready.

“I hope you don’t mind,” he said sweetly.

“Of course not,” I said softly, following him through the front doors.

The place was immaculate. It was decorated with soft, neutral colors, fresh flowers, and expensive artwork. “It pays well to be a doctor in La Jolla,” I said with a slight chuckle. It was my nerves. I always laughed when I was nervous. That’s why I couldn’t ever tell a lie; lies made me nervous.

“Make yourself at home,” he said, disappearing into the kitchen.

“You want a drink?” he called out from the other room.

“Yes, please,” I yelled back, realizing I may need it to calm my nerves.

He quickly appeared a glass of wine in hand. “You can join me in the kitchen if you want,” he said.

I never had a man cook for me before. It was certainly something I wanted to watch. I smiled, followed him into the kitchen, and then took a seat at the large curved bar.

He pulled out scallops from his fridge, wrapped in white butcher’s paper. “Do you like scallops?” he asked.

I nodded, leaning on the counter with my elbows resting on the granite. He drizzled olive oil into a pan, heated it up, and then seasoned the oil before placing the scallops into it. They sizzled and popped, but he didn’t flinch. It was obvious he was comfortable in the kitchen.

It only took a few minutes to sear both sides of the scallops. He set them aside on a paper towel and then pulled a gourmet salad from his fridge. He prepared us each a bowl of greens and then set the scallops on a fancy serving plate for us to share. “This is amazing,” I said, taking my first bite.

“I told you they were the best. And you deserve the best,” he said charmingly.

I nibbled on the scallops and picked through my salad. My nerves had taken over, and my stomach wasn’t ready for food. His eyes on me, watching my mouth open as I ate his food made me realize he wasn’t very hungry either. At least not for scallops.

“Would you like a tour?” he asked.

“Yes, that would be great,” I replied.

He stood, took my hand, and led me out of the kitchen. I followed him out the back door to a large deck, complete with a Jacuzzi. “It’s absolutely beautiful out here,” I gasped, taking in the view of the ocean. It was literally steps away. There were other houses on the same strip, but each far apart from the others. It was so private, you could make love right in the sand, something I’d always dreamt of doing.

“You want to take a walk?” he asked, almost as if he were reading my thoughts.

“Yes,” I took his hand and walked down the long set of stairs until we made it to the sand.

We both kicked off our shoes, letting our toes sink into the warm sand. As we neared the water, I could see a ring of stones where he’d made fires before. The wind coming off the ocean was cool, and as fall was starting to set in, nights were becoming much cooler than usual. He gathered wood, mostly from a pile he’d alread
y had stacked. He pulled a lighter from his pocket and started the kindling until it had created a large enough blaze to add the larger pieces of wood. “I don’t have a blanket down here,” he said apologetically.

I sat down in the sand, smiling, and not caring if it got into every crevice I had. It was romantic, beautiful, and my dream. I knew it had only been two dates, but I had a strong feeling in my heart that this could be my Mr. Right.

The fire crackled, lighting up the beach around us. The moon shined down onto the ocean, giving us a beautiful view of the white crests of the breaking waves against the cliffs. Elijah leaned in, kissing me softly as his hands caressed my hips. I leaned into to him, letting my tongue come to life in his mouth, swirling around his tongue, sucking the flavor from his kiss.

He leaned toward me, pushing me back into the sand. It was cool and refreshing against my skin, heated by the fire. “You’re amazing,” he whispered in my ear.

I felt the air of a soft sigh escape my lips as his mouth sucked the sensitive skin of my neck. My back arched, pushing my lower half into his. I could feel his erection, hard, ready, and hungry to be set free. My hands reached down, stroking his cock against his khaki shorts, making him moan into the night.

His gentle touch turned aggressive, filled with passion as he lifted my top, pulling it over my head. He reached behind me, unsnapping my bra, and releasing my breasts into the cool night air. I could feel the heat from the tall flame tickling at my flesh, my nipples responding by tightening.

His mouth hungrily worked its way to my breasts, sucking on one erect nipple, and then flicking it with his tongue. I moaned out his name, gripped his cock in my hand, and began stroking him as he continued to tease my breasts.

It was obvious he knew his way around a woman’s body, his hands working effortlessly to remove my shorts while his mouth worked on teasing and pleasing me.

He lifted himself up, pulling away to where my hand could no longer reach his cock. His deep-blue eyes glistened in the moonlight, making me remember the feeling I got when thinking about his brother. It was so innocent, so pure, and even though I wasn’t a child any longer, and this wasn’t his brother, it still felt so familiar, so perfect. This is what I always thought it should feel like to be with a man. It was passionate, my sexual tension was high, and my body ached from his touch, but more importantly, it felt as though his eyes were penetrating my soul. I felt connected.
