Prologue
Simon Mark Sessions
I didn’t even know how to process the man standing in front of me. I loathed the son of a bitch so bad; everything from his cocky arrogance down to his expectations that everyone would do as he wanted them to because he was a billionaire. How he’d ended up getting me by the balls was beyond me, but unlike the others he manipulated to get his way, I wasn’t about to cave into the demands of the spoiled child that stared at me with venom in his eyes.
“So Bixby,” I said, taking a step toward him as he slunk on the couch in my office, acting casual as he tried to talk like he was Mafioso.
“I see I have you thinking, Dr. Sessions. I like seeing the angst as that pretty boy face of yours tries to think of what to say next. Trust me, there isn’t a thing you can say to me that I can’t conquer,” Bixby said to me.
“You’ll always be who you are and I could care less, guys like you can’t keep up the charade forever. Eventually your cover will be blown and everyone will know exactly who you are,” I replied. “It’s Lina that I’m worried about. She’s an amazing woman, a good woman, and you’re messing with her. Why? You’ve tried to answer that before, but not really. Now that she’s dumped you, you’re screwed. Looks like you’re not getting your way.”
Bixby started laughing and sat up, resting his elbows on his thighs. “You think you know Lina? And how, exactly, would you know her, Simon?”
I had to tread carefully here. Lina did have patient confidentiality privileges with me, although we had anything but a typical therapist/patient relationship. If Bixby found out, he’d tried to blackmail me even more than he already was from that Gloria Sanz incident. “She just appears very innocent, a bit naïve,” I finally said.
A deep laugh came from Bixby, starting more quietly and then growing louder. “Innocent? And how would you know how innocent or not innocent Lina is?”
“It just appears that way…from what you said,” I offered. He evaluated my statement and if it made him further suspicious, he chose to ignore it for the moment.
“Lina is a brilliant actress in all arenas, not just on the stage and screen. I’ve never met a woman who can learn a role so quickly and absolutely love it, dive right in enough that you don’t know if you’re with her or the character. Quite brilliant, actually. Too bad it isn’t a category for the Oscars. She’d be a shoe-in.”
Okay, I was shocked. “You mean role playing?”
“More or less. Lina is special…she has the ability to become anything I desire. I love it and she’s a rare treasure, one that I will never let go.”
“She couldn’t be,” I mumbled. I was genuinely thrown off by it. The innocent woman who was great at blow jobs couldn’t be into all of that, not in the way Bixby described it, at least. If she was, that was borderline personality disorder territory. He had to be jerking my chain, there was no other logical explanation.
“Oh, she is Simon. I’m not sure why you’d be surprised, but let me tell you. Sexually, she is like all the women I’ve ever had wrapped into one pretty, sexy package. She consumes me, and she does it rather well, I might add.”
My fists involuntarily clenched up when he said that. I could clearly recall the way Lina’s mouth felt on my cock and her body felt near mine. Bixby’s reminder ruined that sweet image. It had been a moment where I thought that Lina and I were really coming together, that the two of us had a chance. “You’re manipulating her in some way then, Bixby. That’s wrong and sick, you know.”
He snorted at me. “Look who’s talking, Doc. Lina is everything and more to me. She does it all and does it just as good or better.”
Even Gloria, I thought. I couldn’t say it, though, because despite what Bixby did to me while she was going down on me for a therapy session, confidentiality still did apply.
“I love seeing the smooth talker develop a heavy tongue. Don’t worry, Simon, I’ll do all the talking. I’m sure a man in your profession would love to hear all the details. Let me share my favorite little trick of my little Lina with you. It’s the virgin thing. Man, the way she uses that sweet, innocent virgin bit gets me hard so fast. She’s so good at it.”
I glanced at Ralph and he put his hand to his crotch and cupped it, enjoying this thoroughly. My damn head was spinning. I feared that if I took a step closer to him I might want to lunge at him and pummel him until he shut that arrogant mouth of his.
“She’s not a virgin?” I asked, confused. It was hard to tell if he was saying that the virginity was the masterpiece of her acting or if she was only acting like she was a virgin, had some sort of emotional problem about it being gone.
“Why do you care?” Bixby asked. “Stick with me, I need to talk Dr. Sessions and you have to listen, right?”
“No, you’re not a client, but feel free to diffuse on me if you must.” I didn’t have to keep confidentiality with Bixby because he wasn’t an official client. What I was really hoping for was that he’d give me some information that I might be able to use to gain some leverage in this situation. We still had a score to settle about my family’s business and the way he’d treated Lina.
“Yeah, you’re so caring, Dr. Sessions. Sorry I don’t suck dick like Gloria.” He laughed at his joke and then continued. “Have you ever seen a girl look so good in a mini skirt? Takes me back to college days…”
He broke off into some frat boy rant and I mumbled, “Yes.” I recalled that day on the golf course when I saw her in that shorter golf skirt. Her legs had been killer and the entire ensemble had just lent to the fantasy that she naturally brought out in me, and apparently in Bixby, too.
“She’s a great cook, too,” Bixby said. “You wouldn’t know it because she doesn’t make a big deal of it.”
“Oh,” I said. Out of all the things Bixby was tossing out the cooking thing was more immediately impactful. It made me visualize a great meal, intimate conversation, and those slight touches of each other’s hand that might lead to something more. It was a romantic thought that was foreign to me and my desire to experience it with Lina threw me off.
“And when she makes a friend, she’s really loyal,” Bixby said. “Not many people are. I’ve never had a truly loyal friend before, one that I could always count on.”
That’s because you’re a prick, I thought. “I kn
ow that,” I said. “Lina had a suicidal friend that I helped get some help once.”
He sneered at my statement. I really wished he’d stop doing that because it was so annoying. He wanted to degrade me, but he wasn’t doing that. He didn’t have that type of hold over me.
“Lina would do anything for a friend, whether they were worthy of it or not. She’d even go see a therapist for them to try and help them out,” Bixby said.
Alert! “You mean…”
Bixby completed my sentence. “She only made an appointment to see you, Simon, so she could try and set you up with her friend…”
“She did?” I asked casually, not wanting to let my emotions show through. That stung.
“Yeah, the only problem was that she couldn’t stop talking about you after that,” Bixby said. He stood up and put his hands on his hips, staring at me with squinting eyes.
“And that was a problem for you, I’m guessing,” I said. I walked over to my window and looked out of it, trying to regroup my thoughts and keep any expressions I may have on my face hidden.
Bixby said, “I honestly thought you were a good therapist.”
I turned around and glanced at Bixby. Was he being sincere? It sounded like it, but I didn’t trust him. I stared at him, my arms crossed, and trying to assess his intent. I couldn’t stand the conflict. Part of me wanted to kick him out of my office and the other part wanted to remain calm and find out everything I could about him. He had that type of false arrogance that made him think he could do anything and people would take him at his word, never dare challenge him. In that type of personality there was always weakness.
“It’s true, I did think you must be good, and I wanted to think you were. After all, Lina thinks so highly of you.”
“I think highly of her,” I said.
“I bet,” Bixby said. “Everyone loves her…”
“She’s easy to love,” I replied, thinking about all the details about her that so completely captivated me.
“So, do you love her?” Bixby asked.
“I…” I stopped talking because there was no way I was going to admit that I loved Lina out loud. Holy shit! I did love her.
“Are you banging her?” Bixby asked suddenly. He walked over to me quickly and aggressively. “Are you banging my girl, Dr. Simon Sessions?” He was right up on my face and he pushed me hard against the glass window behind me.
This guy didn’t intimate me and I looked him right in the eyes. “She is no longer your business.”
“So you are fucking my girl,” Bixby said angrily, his face turning red. He leaned in to sneer into my face, “I didn’t see that coming, but I can assure you, Simon, that no one, especially a phony like you, will keep me from marrying that girl.”
“She broke off your engagement. You’re sounding desperate and well, pathetic,” I said. “She clearly doesn’t want to marry you, Bixby. You lost her, now get over it.”
“Like hell I have. I don’t lose!” he shouted at me. He’d lost his composure…quite easily, in fact. “She wanted me and was happy until she started seeing you, Dr. Sessions. What kind of bullshit have you been feeding her about me? What are you trying to pull?”
In a move that was quicker than I ever would have given Bixby credit for, he sucker punched me in the gut and twisted it in. Instinctually, my abs tightened and it didn’t hurt the way he’d obviously hoped it would. I looked at him and shook my head, showing just how pathetic I believed he was. “You better fix whatever you did to Lina, got it. If not you will pay.”
“I’ll pay. What the hell do you think you can really do to me, Bixby? You think you have something on me, but you don’t. You, on the other hand, there’s a fair amount of dirt on you despite you trying to keep a tidy trail.”
“You have no idea what I’m capable of, but you soon will. If you don’t set this right prepare to say goodbye to the talk show, your practice, and everything else. Remember Brandi? Well, that’s just the start. When I talk, people listen and respond. People you know and care about most are going to start running into problems that bring them down. And you’ll only have yourself to blame, Simon.”
That was the last that Bixby said. He walked out of my office, leaving me there feeling angry and annoyed. He flew by Pamela, my new receptionist and out the door, making a loud commotion.
I looked at her and shrugged my shoulders. She smiled briefly and then put her head down. Don’t ask, don’t tell.
Chapter 1
The composure that had always been so easily mine was becoming foreign to me and I didn’t like it. I had to get rid of the stress somehow and diffuse about this situation. Honestly, if I didn’t have Matt to talk with, I think I would have punched through the thick pane of my glass window in my office.
I waited in the weight lifting room for Matt, who was busy talking with some sales rep that had come into the club, and pacing back and forth, trying to warm up and get ready to lift weights until my stress and frustration evaporated out of me and common sense was restored. All I could think about was Lina and if she was playing me, or if Bixby was the one playing me. Maybe both?
“Man, what’s up? You’re pacing around like a mad man,” Matt said.
I turned around and half smiled, still thinking about Lina. “I’m so stressed out, Matt, it’s unbearable. Lina is driving me crazy. Actually, Bixby is driving me crazy and making me wonder if I even know the real Lina.”
“What did he do now, Simon?”
“She broke off the engagement with him and he came to see me. Started sharing all this crazy information about Lina and role playing, him getting her back and doing whatever he has to do. He looked like a lunatic, completely insane.”
“Well, you’re the one acting crazy now. Maybe it was just talk from him being scorned. He’s embarrassed. Their engagement has been announced and her breaking it off ruins his ego. Why worry so much about it?”
“His threat was legit, not emotional. I can tell those things, Matt. What I cannot figure out is what he’d do to all these people and how he could get away with it. He can’t be that damn powerful.”
“From where I stand, your biggest problem is that you underestimate Ralph Bixby simply because you don’t like him. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like him, either, Simon, but the guy is powerful and has clout with the most elite families in the Seattle area, and hell, probably the entire damn country. Maybe your best interests are to just go get laid and get this Lina thing out of your mind. It’s making you crumble.”
I looked at Matt and appreciated his candor. He was right in a logical sense, but now that I’d internally admitted that I loved her, that wasn’t an option. “I think I’m in love with her,” I blurted.
“Whoa…strong words from the confirmed lifelong bachelor. Really?” Matt asked.
“Really. I have no clue how it happened, but that’s what I feel.”
“Well, is it worth possibly losing everything and the fight to keep her?” Matt asked.
That was a huge question. How far was I willing to go to get Lina into my arms on a more permanent basis? I think I was willing to go the distance, but if she ran away or was resistant to the idea there wasn’t anything I could do about that, and I sure as hell didn’t want to be in a relationship with a woman who I might just be a rebound for.
“Matt, I can see why Bixby would do anything to get her back, based on love, but he talks about her like a piece of meat, an object he can possess, not with the type of love or compassion you should if you are marrying someone.”
“Maybe he just doesn’t think he needs to tell you those things. I can get that,” Matt offered.
“Yeah, maybe, but still…”
“Let’s get working out and we can continue the conversation later, okay?”
“Sure,” I said.
Matt glanced to the side and noticed his personal assistant standing there. He called her over and told her to order some equipment for the club right away, putting a rush on its delivery. She nodded and left
.
We began our workout and it felt great. Just when I was starting the third rep my cellphone went off and I saw that it was Lina. “Just a minute, Matt.”
“Hey, Lina, how are you?”
“Good, Simon, but I need to see you badly. I want a repeat of our last visit at your place. Can you be there?”
“Yes,” I said. No brainer!
“Sorry, Matt, something’s come up. I’ve got to go.”
“Just make sure it’s not up when you’re walking through the club,” he said, giving a sarcastic chuckle.
“Real funny,” I said.
We began to walk toward the locker room and Matt’s personal assistant, Jenna, came running up to him with a very pale face.
