A Close Run Thing

  ‘And if I can’t get a place?’

‘You’re a survivor Gherson, so survive.’

Edward Druce looked at the bill he would be required to meet to satisfy Emily Barclay: a hefty one, which was not just reparation for the questionable trades. Included were the substantial costs of Southouse and Garrow. She had asked the funds to be remitted to her local bankers in Frome within seven days or she would instigate court proceedings in a case, thanks to Gherson, the firm could not win.

Her business was now with Davidson, which had not pleased Francis Ommaney when he was told of the loss of the client. What would he say to this? It was clear Hodgson had played his part and betrayed him. When challenged he had asked Druce to examine his conscience.

‘Damn you, Denby,’ he cursed out loud. ‘You can meet this. And if you decline …’

The result of that was left hanging: threatening his brother-in-law, now raging on about Gherson being at liberty, was not to be undertaken lightly. And the real worry was what he would do now.
