  “Where do you think you’re going?” he gripes, nostrils flaring.

  “Away from you. Stop man-handling me. Let go!” I push against his chest, and he groans. Rolling my eyes at him, I quickly dry my body and begin packing a duffel bag. I don’t know what I’m doing or where I’m going, but I do know that I need to get away from this man. He’s corrupting my mind, and I honestly don’t think we’re in the right head spaces to be this close together.

  “Stop packing,” he says as I come back, fully dressed and mouth fresh after brushing. It’s not that I didn’t feel uncomfortable dressing in front of him; I wanted to piss him off. To make him see what he’s losing because he’s being so selfish, inconsiderate, and close-minded.

  I zip shut the duffel and start for the door, but he whirls me into his chest.

  “Stop doing that!” I yank my hands from him, yelling now. “Stop grabbing me and assuming I will stick by your side. I am my own person. I can very well leave if I feel like it.” It’s true. I just forgot it for a very long time. But now I’m being reminded of it, and I am taking advantage of free will. Crazy, it exists, but you’d never know with Grey as your boyfriend.

  “You promised me forever and always,” he whines, eyes glistening.

  I sigh and rub my face. He’s throwing my words back at me, like I expected him to. “I also promised to run to you, not from you. But seeing how you’re being a stubborn dick, I’d rather turn on my heel than deal with your bullshit.”

  “Then you’re a fucking liar,” he snaps at me.

  “No, you just didn’t live up to the promises. The tattoo on your back is a fucking lie. It’s not a commitment. It’s confirmation that we’ll be stuck in one place for the rest of our relationship.”

  He grinds his teeth together, knowing I’m right. “Just…don’t go.” He holds out his hand and softens his handsome face, lulling me to drop the touchy subject and my bag. I almost take it. I almost let him control what I want and have always desired, but then my brain kicks my heart in the ass, and I lift my chin in defiance and walk around him.

  I leave the apartment, almost dropping my bag and running back into his arms. His rampage and screams are the last thing I hear before the elevator doors gently close. I lean against the metal wall and stare up at the square patch through the ceiling, watching as the elevator goes down floor by floor. I close my eyes and tell myself, I need to do this, distance myself and figure out where we will go on from here. I need to figure out for myself if I can really let go of what I expected my future to look like.
