In some ways Kelsey Cox is a victim of her own past choices. How do you feel about her character? What options does she have now? What do you think she will do? Is there a situation in your life where you feel stuck because of choices you’ve made in the past? How might you begin to change your course?
Why does Woody insist on keeping Abby in the dark after he and Luke uncover a clue that could give her some answers about her parents’ deaths? Should Luke have pressed the issue and told Abby earlier? Why or why not?
During a time when she doesn’t feel like she can pray, Abby is touched to know that her aunt Dede is praying for her. Think of a time in your life when the prayers of others ministered to you in this way. How is it different from being able to pray on your own behalf? Is there someone in your circle of influence who’s facing a situation that you might pray for?
Dede suggests that Abby’s foundation was weak—that she got into police work for the wrong reasons. How does Abby’s calling become clearer to her? In what ways have you discovered your calling in life—or if you’re still searching for it, what are some possible ways God might be directing you?
Althea Joiner asks to meet with Abby after the shooting death of her husband. She tells Abby, “I needed to look you in the eye and say that I forgive you. It’s only by saying it that maybe, one day, I’ll feel it.” Has there ever been a situation in your life when you found it difficult, if not impossible, to forgive someone who had hurt you—whether or not the hurt was intentional? Do you agree that by saying we forgive someone, it can become easier to feel it? What are some other ways to move toward forgiveness in a difficult situation? Why is it important to take steps in that direction?
Molly Cavanaugh is understandably haunted by her kidnapping and rape as a young teen. What did you think of Abby’s confrontational style, telling the girl to let go of the past? Are Molly’s parents right to shelter her and try to protect her from further pain? How can we help those we love to live healthy lives while still protecting them in appropriate ways?
Gil Barone seems like an incorrigibly evil person. Do you believe some people are like that, totally beyond redemption? Why or why not? What do Molly’s actions toward him at the end of the story show?
What does Abby learn about her family in talking with her uncle Simon? Were you surprised at the depiction of Buck Morgan that was painted in the letters he and his brother exchanged?
Where do Abby and Luke land on Lowell Rollins’s culpability in the Triple Seven fire and murders? Do you agree with their conclusion? Why or why not? How would you rate Lowell’s chances of winning the senate race?
