I pulled away, my body reeling with warmth from our intimate moment. “You’re amazing,” I praised her.

She leaned in and resumed our kiss. My fingers found the back of her silky hair and I tilted her head to the side and slid my tongue between the softness of her lips, kissing her deeper than the first time. My excitement grew as she placed her hands on my chest and smoothed them up to my shoulders, bringing her body closer to mine. Each second that passed grew more amazing than the last. And then my phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled away with a smile of regret. “Sorry. It’s my alarm.” We took our hands away from each other and I pulled my phone out from my pocket, ending the reminder that was lit up on the screen. “It’s time for my dad’s medication.”

“Oh,” she nodded. “That’s definitely more important.”

“Yeah. But kissing you comes in at a close second.”

She collected herself and stood up, her face a bashful shade of red. “I, uh, I really enjoyed that.”

I stood up beside her. “I know.”

“Well now you’re just going to do your thing and ruin it, huh?” she joked.

I brought my hand to her waist and pulled her against me. “I’m not ruining anything,” I told her with sureness. “And I thoroughly enjoyed it too.” I smiled and leaned in, placing another kiss on her perfectly-shaped lips. The pond was now hands down my favorite spot on my property.

I could tell she was pissed off when I saw her. I waited for my client to leave and then turned my attention back to her bitter-looking face. “Hey you. Is everything alright?” That was an obviously dumb question on my part.

“No,” she huffed, crossing her arms in front of her.

I unbuttoned my suit jacket and pushed my hands into the pockets of my slacks. “Well what’s wrong?”

  “You know exactly what’s wrong.”

She was right; I did know what was wrong. We had had a meeting with our clients earlier that didn’t go so well, and I knew she needed to get her frustrations out about it.

I looked over at my secretary who was eyeing us from behind the computer screen on her desk. “I’m done for the day. You can go home now.”

She nodded quickly and picked up her purse. “I have those papers you need to sign on my desk.”

“I’ll take care of it. Thanks.”

As she went to the door she smiled at Roxy. “Have a nice evening,” she said.

“You too,” Roxy replied, her face softening for a short moment.

“Lock the door on your way out, please,” I told her.

  “Okay.”

Once we were alone I gave Roxy a half-smile. “You want to come into my office?”

  “Sure.”

I led the way into my office and closed the blinds before sitting down behind my desk. “What’s wrong, Roxy?” I asked, leaning back in my chair.

She sat down across from me. “How could you do that to me?”

  “Do what?”

“Talk to me that way in our meeting earlier.”

  “You mean like a lawyer?”

She crossed her arms. “Are you really going to try and pretend that you weren’t being a complete jerk to me?”

My eyebrows lifted. “What are you talking about?” I knew what she was talking about. It was my annoying habit, getting wrapped up in my love of arguing.

  “Ugh,” she sighed. “You are so . . . I don’t know.”

  “I’m so what exactly?”

  “Infuriating.”

  “Why?”

She leaned forward and looked me right in my eyes. “Are you really going to try and take the beach house from Steve?”

“I can’t discuss those details with you without my client present.”

Her mouth fell open. “Are you kidding me right now?”

  “No.”

She uncrossed her arms and folded her hands together on her lap. “I see,” she said, looking down at them. “This, uh, this is working out exactly as I figured it would.”

Uh-oh. “What do you mean?” I asked with a spec of hesitation.

“We’re just not going to work.”

  “Why not?”

“Because,” she laughed lightly while looking back up at me. “You’re my enemy.”

Now that I was completely head over heels for her, those words stung a bit more than they used to. “I’m not your enemy; I’m your peer.”

“Yeah, my peer who has no mercy when it comes to getting what your client wants.”

I shifted in my chair. “Listen, did you honestly think that just because we’re dating that I was going to treat you differently when we met with our clients together?”

“Yes, to be honest, I did.”

  “Well you were wrong.”

“I guess I was.” She shook her head. “I think what upsets me the most is that you know Claire isn’t entitled to that house. She doesn’t deserve it.”

I stood up from my chair and slipped off my suit jacket. “Yes she does.”

“And how is that?” she puffed bitterly.

I felt I desperately needed to lighten the mood. I managed a smile and unbuttoned the sleeves of my dress shirt. “You have that little crease in your forehead right now,” I said, nodding my head at hers. “The one you get when you’re angry.”

She jumped up from her seat. “Don’t mock me, Brad.”

“Oh just sit down and relax, Roxy.”

“You can’t tell me what to do you egotistical jerk!”

My face hardened; she wasn’t up for humor. “Sit down,” I ordered her calmly. I don’t know why, but she obeyed my request and sat back down on the white leather chair. I wasn’t the type of man to order my woman around but when it came to this situation at this exact moment her obeying me was quite a turn on. I went around the side of my desk and loosened my tie. “Thank you.”

She cut her eyes up at me. “I’m really upset with you right now.”

“Yeah, that’s a little obvious.” I took off my tie and laid it on the arm of the chair she was sitting on. “Listen, you know how I play ball when I’m working. You’ve known this from the beginning.”

“Yeah but I thought you would see the difference between right and wrong.”

“I do,” I said as I knelt down in front of her. “And I see that both of our clients are in the wrong.”

“How is Steve in the wrong?”

“He wasn’t there for Claire when she needed him, just as much as she wasn’t there for him when he needed her.”

“That’s bull,” she shot back. “She’s a gold digger Brad, and you know it.” She stood up quickly, forcing me to stand back up as well. “I don’t understand how you can’t see that.”

I wasn’t an idiot; I knew exactly what Claire was. “You don’t know what I see,” I told her.

“No, I don’t. But I do see one thing, that she’s a busty blonde who gives you bedroom eyes every time you walk in the room. Maybe that’s the reason, huh?”

Now that pissed me off. “What exactly are you insinuating?” I demanded.

“Oh I thought you could read people, Brad. Well, if you’re having trouble then maybe you can read this!” She stuck her hand in the air and flipped me off. “And if you’re still confused,” she continued while thrusting out her other hand and flipping me another bird, “then here’s a copy for you to keep in your records!”

That was the hottest thing she had ever done to me. I needed to calm her down so she would stay and let me show her just how hot she made me feel. Cue my inappropriate humor . . . “Man, that crease is really showing itself right now . . .”

“Argh!” She threw her hands in the air, resigning from our argument.

“I mean that sucker’s deep!” I went on against my better judgement. “I can plant a row of corn in there.”

“Goodbye, Mr. Hunter.” She spun around to leave, but I took a hold of her arm.

“Where are you going?” I chuckled deeply.

She turned back to face me a
nd shrugged my hand off of her. “You’re enjoying this . . .”

“Hey, I told you from the beginning that I like to argue.”

“Yeah and you just won’t let up, will you?”

“You’re the one that keeps bringing up our case.”

“Because you’re being ridiculous!” she said, her voice raising once again.

“Roxy, you need to realize that when we’re in that courtroom together that I’m working for Claire and not for you. And I’m going to do everything in my power to win my case.”

“Well you know what?” she said, poking her finger into my chest. “I’m going to do everything in my power to make you lose your case. And you’ll always remember me as the woman who gave you your first loss. I promise you that.”

She both pissed me off and turned me on with the same words. “Is that so?”

She dug her finger harder into me. “Yes, it is.”

My chest rose with a solid breath. “That’s what I wanted to hear.” I put my arms around her waist and pulled her against me.

“Wha . . . what are you doing?” she asked, my actions taking her by surprise.

“What does it look like I’m doing?”

  “I thought we were arguing.”

“No no, baby,” I said as I leaned down and placed a kiss on the side of her neck. “This is foreplay.”

She tilted her head to the side to grant me access to continue to where I was going. It was easy to tell that her body was reacting positively to my touch; she wanted me. I smoothed my hands down her ass and pulled her closer against me; I wanted her to feel me, feel what she made my body do.

Our breaths became heavy as I swallowed her mouth with a deep kiss. Within seconds my shirt was gone and her fingers were tracing along my stomach and up to my chest, the prominence of my muscles drawing her eyes and turning her on even more.

I tugged her shirt free from the waistband of her skirt and I pulled it up over her head and threw it across the room. My fingers gripped onto the back of her bra and I unclasped it as she pulled the hair tie out of her hair and let it flow loosely around her shoulders. The sight was too much. I pulled her against me and kissed her as I led her over to my desk, lifting her up and setting her on the edge. I stopped our kiss and stepped back, bringing my hands to my belt and unfastening it slowly while she watched.

“Why did you want to hear that?” she asked, her breaths heavy.

“You mean your promise to make me lose my first case?”

  “Yeah.”

I pulled off my belt and threw it to the side. “Because I wanted you to exert yourself as the talented fiery woman you are. You will be a hard lawyer for me to beat; I wanted you to admit that yourself.”

“And that turned you on . . .” she stated with a smile.

“Immensely.” I unfastened the button on my slacks and then slid my zipper down. I was so ready to take her, ready to consume her right there on my desk.

But I didn’t even need to make the first move. She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me down on top of her. I pushed myself up over her with one hand and stared down into her eyes as I pulled up her skirt with my other. I had imagined this moment time and time again, replaying it over and over again in my head as I stared up at my bedroom ceiling in the dark night after night. And now it was here, and I was ready to show her exactly the kind of man I was. I was ready to show her I could deliver every desire she had ever fathomed in her head when it came to having sex with a man.

So I gripped onto her underwear, and continued to prove to her without argument that I was the best lover she would ever have.

  * * *

I was falling in love with her. The past two weeks had been amazing, every minute between work was spent either on the phone or texting, and of course our in-person encounters were highly sexual. We couldn’t get enough of each other. Well, at least I couldn’t get enough of her. Which made it hard as I stood in front of the closed door to her office. I didn’t steal her client, but she assumed I did. There was some dumb rumor going around that I did crap like that but it wasn’t true. I was just a well-known lawyer from the city and people were intrigued by that.

I could hear the loud buzzing of her shredder as I tapped on the door.

“Go away Mr. Hunter, I’m in a meeting.”

I turned the handle and pushed it open. “I thought you didn’t lie.”

“That’s your motto, not mine,” she said, choosing to avoid eye contact with me and keeping focused on her shredding.

I put my hands in my pockets and came around to the side of her desk. “What are you doing?”

“Shredding the Stillman file. Why, would you like to have it? I might as well give it to you so you can have all the information I worked so hard on gathering.”

“Are you really that upset about this?”

“Of course I’m that upset about it. It’s a big hit to my ego.”

  “Good.”

She looked up at me, her eyes narrowing into a glare. “What do you mean, good?”

“It shows that your profession matters to you.”

She swiveled around in her chair and slammed the file down on her desk. “What is it with you trying to make me prove that I’m good at my job or that my job matters to me? I love my job. And I’m very good at it.”

  “I know you are.”

“Then why do you keep talking to me like this? Like you’re my mentor or something?”

“Because I want you to be better.”

“Better? So that means that you think I’m not that good apparently.”

  “I never said that.”

“Then what are you trying to say?”

“I’m trying to say you can be better at your job. And I only know that because your client left you. And I didn’t sway him to leave you; he decided it on his own, and then came to me for help after the fact.”

Her mouth opened with shock. “I really don’t know what to say about this conversation we’re having. I feel like I’m being attacked.”

“You’re not being attacked. I’m telling you how it is. You are a very talented lawyer but for whatever reason the ball was dropped on your part and you lost a client. You need to figure out what you did wrong so you can pick up and carry on and not make the same mistake again. That’s the only way you’ll better yourself.”

“And what, be more like you? And never lose a case?”

  “No, I—”

“Is this what our relationship is going to be like? Are you going to compare me to you every second of my professional life?”

“No. I’m doing this because I believe in you.”

“I already have a dad who believes in me, I don’t need another one!”

My head dropped to my shoes. The last thing I wanted to look like to her was a father figure. “Yeah, yeah I know what you’re trying to say.” I looked back up at her, wishing I could retract so many of the statements I had just uttered. “I was just trying to push you to be what I know you can be.”

She straightened her posture and took the Stillman file back into her hands. “Well thank you for your support. Now, I’m in the middle of a meeting with my shredder.” She swiveled in her seat so her back was to me once again.

I didn’t know what to do. I felt like I destroyed our relationship by giving her professional advice. But then again, that was my problem. She was my girlfriend, not my business partner. And she was an amazing lawyer; she didn’t need my help or my suggestions. So doing what I thought was the smart thing to do, I left her office without another word.

It didn’t keep me from texting her though. She ignored me until Sunday, which I felt I deserved. But after talking it through and apologizing for what I had said she actually invited me over, which made me breathe a heavy sigh of relief. My heart was too emotionally invested with her to lose her; I needed her. If she left me it would completely destroy me.

  * * *

My hand came around her stomach and I tightened my hold, not wanting
to let her go. She moved her head to the side and I slowly began kissing her neck, gently grazing my tongue across her sweet-smelling skin.

“I thought you said you weren’t going to try and poke me with your giant penis,” she joked.

I laughed quietly next to her ear. “That was when you didn’t feel good.”

  “Ah, I see.”

“You want me to stop?” I asked, sincerely wanting to respect her feelings.

  “Absolutely not.”

“Yeah, that’s what I figured.” My hand gravitated lower down her body, making its way beneath her pants. She sighed at my touch, the pleasant sound exciting me. “You keep making those noises, baby,” I told her.

  “I will; I can’t help it.”

My hand curved down over the top of her underwear and settled between her legs. “Do you like it when I make love to you?” I whispered next to her ear.

“What kind of a question is that?” she asked with a pleasant smile.

“I just like hearing you tell me.”

She shifted her body so she was facing me better. “I love it when you make love to me.”

I hooked my finger around the inside edge of the crotch of her underwear. “Because it’s not every time that I do it slowly,” I said, sliding my finger lower.

  “I know; I like both.”

“And how do you want it now?”

  “Just like this.”

Without another word I leaned in and placed my lips against hers. When her tongue slid against mine she shifted below me, allowing me to lower over her so she was under me completely. I instinctively rubbed against her and moved my hand from the inside of her pants to underneath her shirt to feel her braless chest. Her hands were in my hair and the deeper I kissed her the harder she pulled at my strands.

I sat back and lifted her shirt, exposing her bare breasts in the glow of the television screen. They were works of art, and I admired them as I smoothed my hand across them. My eyes locked with hers and she arched her back, silently asking me to take her shirt off the rest of the way. I slid it up over her head and threw it to the side.

Her hands ran up my stomach as I took my shirt off and threw it on the floor. Everything she did excited me, and when she lifted her behind for me to take off the rest of her clothes I complied willingly, and followed by taking off the rest of mine.
