No Quarter Asked Page 17

by Janet Dailey

'Look at the way you paraded Lydia around. She told me you were going to marry.' Stacy's upturned face was earnest as she added, 'That night on the veranda I thought you were pretending I was Lydia.'

'How I wanted you that night, darling.' His calloused hand traced the curve of her cheek. 'When you recoiled from me—–'

'Not from you, Cord. Never from you.'

'Oh, the tangled webs we weave,' Cord smiled.

'If you hadn't overheard my conversation with Carter and forced me to admit to you my love, would you have let me leave tomorrow?'

'I would have shown you no mercy, Miss Adams,' Cord mocked gruffly.

‘No quarter asked,’ Stacy replied with a smile, lifting her face for his kiss.

'And none given, Stacy,' Cord murmured, inches away from her lips. 'Now that you're finally mine, I'll never let you go. And there'll be no fancy wedding. We're going to be married as soon as we can. You understand that,'

'Yes, Cord, yes,' Stacy answered fervently, yielding once again to his embrace.
