  My “Goddess”—

I was actually 5th row at the Ryan Adams show at The Fox last month. He’s such a jerk, but he makes incredible music. To quote Office Space,

  “I celebrate his entire catalogue.”

“La Cienega Smiled” was one of the first songs I learned to play on my (Martin) guitar. If you are lucky (and if I’ve had a few Jacks and Diet Cokes), you just might get a performance later.

I look forward to your call. ;-)

5 more points for quoting Office Space. How ’bout that stapler?

5 more points for seeing Ryan Adams a.k.a. “The Jerk.” I, too, was seated near the front, maybe Row 10?

10 points for playing the guitar. Yes, I’m a typical girl in that regard … duh. A guy with a guitar is … well … “you know.” ;-)

  Talk to you Sunday,

P.S. You’re gaining points left and right. I’m starting to feel behind!

  One Night Left …

This e-mail was written but not sent and will save as Draft until further action.

I was thinking that it’d be a brilliant idea if you spent your last night in town letting me take you on a first date somewhere fabulous instead of studying. I mean, one can only study so much. I think that you would be over-studying by studying the night before you depart, thereby decreasing (perhaps even destroying) your chances of passing this 37% pass-rate test. All that said, I say we go out on the town tomorrow and grab a steak, a glass of full-bodied Cab, toffee bread puddin’ … or, perhaps, we go for sushi instead as I read an article in Newsweek the other day that fish increases brain power (who would’ve thunk it?).

  Whadya say, My Goddess?

I’m going stir crazy out of my mind from studying for two months straight, and I just can’t study anymore! Want to grab a cup of coffee this morning before I head out? I figure what the hell—at this point, I’m either going to pass this test or I’m not. And, I thought … I don’t know … for some reason, the night before I head to SF, the one thing I want to do is … well … meet you …

  Crazy, huh?

I’m excited. I’ve got some friends coming down from Kentucky this Fri through Sun.

If you do get back in town by Sunday afternoon, there’s a show I’d love to see that night (after my friends leave) … Matthew Perryman Jones is playing at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. He plays a mean acoustic guitar, and would be perfect for a laid-back Sunday night.

  Interested?

I’m thinking happy thoughts for you and your test.

Laid-back guitar on a Sunday night sounds great! Count me in. Keep your fingers crossed for me tomorrow thru Thursday. I’ve just eaten sushi with my folks—fish, you know, is brain food. I need all the help I can get at this point!

Let’s touch base Sunday afternoon. I’ll call you on Friday to let you know if I survived. If you don’t hear from me … you may want to send out a rescue team. ;-)

Thanks for the cheery VM today. It’s OVER. I am so lo
oking forward to laid-back guitar on Sunday!

The test was hard, but not impossible. I’m thinking I passed. The multiple choice nearly killed me and resulted in my drinking three glasses of red wine the night before the third and final day, which prompted me to make silly phone calls to my best friend, Peter, in Atlanta and bore him out of his mind with my revelations on life, but … you know … other than that … I think I passed. We shall see.

Have I mentioned how excited I am for Sunday?!

  Hey Marty,

I really hate to do this, but I can’t meet you for a drink tonight. Ugh. How do I put this? Lordy. You see … I … don’t even quite know how to explain this … but I guess I’ll just say it like it is and be blunt about it: I made out with my best guy friend (Peter) this afternoon. I don’t know how it happened, but it just did. And, I’m slightly confused about it, to be honest. I’m very confused. While I really want to meet you for a drink, I think it would be unfair to him and to you (and to me) if I did that. This said, I’m sorry, but I have to cancel. I can’t pursue this any further at the moment, because I need to figure out what in the heck happened with my best friend and me.

I’m really sorry. I was so much looking forward to meeting you as you seemed … well … perfect.

First, again, so sorry for canceling last night. I’m not a flake, I promise! Like I said, something came up at work that I couldn’t avoid.

Second, I’m def free tonight if you still want to meet up for drinks. I was going to suggest Tap which is conveniently across the street from where I live and work. ;-) But, I’m also willing to travel to meet you, no worries.

  Dear Izabell,

While I appreciate your e-mail, I must confess that you threw me for a loop last night when you called to suddenly cancel. I was really disappointed and, at first thought, took you for a flake. However, after carefully thinking about it, I realized that you can’t possibly be a flake—until this point, you haven’t demonstrated any “flaky” qualities (and I’ve dated a bunch of flakes so I would know). And, I do understand that you had a big project come up at work. I get it—you’re a lawyer. These things happen. So, yes, I’m up for rescheduling, but I do want to let you know how disappointed I was. I was really looking forward to last night.

  Still,

  Dear Izabell,

Wow. I’m sitting here in my living room, drinking a Jack and Diet Coke, and thinking to myself: That was the best first date of my life.

What happened tonight? Did you feel it, too? Am I crazy to be saying this? You are The One for me. There is no doubt in my mind. I know it’s absurd to be thinking these things after just one date, but I’ve always believed that when a person knows—they just know.
