She looked at Captain Sharpe, who was watching the discussion between father and daughter with what appeared to be a slight amount of discomfort – as though he, too, recognized how unfair it was to dangle funding over her head in such a manner. Elizabeth could understand her father’s desire for her protection. She might even have been amenable to having Captain Sharpe accompany her if only her father had asked her about it instead of telling her. As it stood, it took every ounce of self-restraint she had not to storm out of the room and never speak to either man again.
Elizabeth took a calming breath. Ignoring her father – whom she knew she would forgive in time, just not today – she spoke directly to Captain Sharpe.
“Very well,” she said. “If you are amenable, Captain, then we will set out next week.”
“That’s awfully soon, Miss,” he replied.
“I’ve planned everything already.” She sent her father a disgruntled look. “Of course, I planned for a solo journey, so I will need to adjust my figures.”
“I’m sure you’ll manage, Lizzie – you have a fine mind. You have my approval for the revised numbers.”
The flattery did not penetrate her resolve to ignore him. She stood up and brushed some imaginary dirt off of her dress. When she looked up she became fixed in Captain Sharpe’s emerald gaze and cursed everything which had led her to this moment.
“Thank you for your assistance, Captain Sharpe.”
“Not at all, Miss.”
Elizabeth nodded curtly, and left the room to begin preparations.
