“So, I see Wally has gone off on one of his larks again.”
She turned at the sound of Waleran’s voice. He was still in his armor, weary from the road, but his eyes smoldered with nothing but love for her.
“You’re back.” She set Isabel on the ground and embraced her husband, thrilling at the warmth and strength of him, taking a deep draught of his scent that she had missed for so long.
“Aye, I will always come back to you.” His eyes crinkled at the corners, his smile wide and easy.
His father spoke up. “Well, I need to spend some time with my grandchild. That Wally is a bit of a hellion, and I need to make sure he doesn’t kill himself.”
“He is playing with the old man, father.” Avelina said, watching him closely.
He grimaced. “I know, dear. Once I see how Waleran is changed, I … well, I am trying to handle it.” Then he smiled. “And I have a grandson!”
Richard immediately called for Wally and the child eagerly ran to embrace him. Isabel crawled to where he was, and he picked her up, swinging her around.
Waleran’s mouth was close to her ear. “Let’s get away while we still can. It has been ages since I’ve touched you.”
She looked up at him. “You are touching me now.”
Waleran laughed out loud. “I want your skin, woman, and you moaning in my arms. I will settle for nothing else.” He swept her up into his arms and carried her into the keep.
“I love you, Waleran, no matter what.”
He kissed her, his powerful arms holding her tighter. “I love you, too, and I promise, I will never be long from you again.”
Waleran and Avelina went up into the chamber and did not come down until well into the next day. They had much joy of each other and made much love secure in the knowledge that they would live all of their days in love together.
