  Chapter Twenty-Three

  1

Terry’s morning had started out as usual. Then things changed for the worse. She started having pains in her stomach.

Terry had to be rushed to the hospital. Her pain wouldn’t go away. She was afraid that something was wrong with the baby.

The doctor was young and marked. He kept looking at Terry’s unmarked forehead. He said the baby needed to be delivered. She was only seven months into her pregnancy. They were going to have to cut her open.

She wanted Trevor to be there with her. She knew it would be awkward for him to watch Robert’s rape child to be born. She felt better that her two friends, Bella’s girls, were there to keep her calm.

It didn’t take long for them to get her ready for surgery. She had never been so scared before. She wanted her grandma.

It all took an hour and then she was in recovery. The baby boy seemed fine for being born two months early. It would be a while before she could see her baby.

Terry had no name for the child. She had to try to think of one, but nothing seemed right. She didn’t know who to talk about it with.

Lou and Cindy were waiting for her when she got back to her room. They had flowers and balloons. Terry couldn’t keep from crying.

The sheriff walked fast through the farmhouse. He had news that just couldn’t wait. The news he had found out made him want to run.

He had to find Robert. Robert had to be upstairs. Everyone said that Robert didn’t want to be bothered.

The sheriff normally would leave Robert alone. He knew Robert didn’t like him and he wasn’t big on Robert. This was news that Robert had to hear. This was something that everyone at the farmhouse was waiting to hear.

He had made it to Robert’s room on the second floor. The noise from the room suggested that Robert wasn’t alone. Bella had to be in there with him. The sheriff knocked on the door anyways.

The room had gone quiet. The sheriff waited. Nobody responded. The sheriff knocked again.

  “Go away!” Robert shouted.

“I got something you need to hear,” the sheriff said. He didn’t want to say it through a door. He wanted Robert to be the first one to hear the news. “We need to talk.”

  “Go away!” Robert shouted again.

“I got some news,” the sheriff said. “It’s about your newly born son.”

The sheriff could hear Robert’s feet hit the floor. It was only moments later when the door opened.

Robert was wrapped in a sheet. “What did you say?”
